Ill get it back to baseball but i'll agree with Danny in that Duncan isnt sustaining our level of excellence that we've become accustomed to over the last 30-40 years. I personally think it comes back to the recruiting as we're not getting the types of guys we used too. Some of these recruits i've seen in high school/summer ball and while good not best program in the midwest level we used to be at. He also let Marconi go (who led the recruiting) and as i understand it he may have pushed coach duncan when decisions were made "thats not how we do it here at Kent" and Duncan's ego got in the way as he wanted to do things different. So i guess this is what "different" get us

RE: 2022 Baseball - JimJoyce - 03-24-2022 04:54 PM

The Marconi move NEVER made any sense and whatever happened there was swept completely under the proverbial rug.

Truth lol

And then lost in 11 innings in the second game. Another pristine pitcher’s duel - an 11-10 loss.

Even worse NIU record was 3-14 before this fiasco.
“Berky” must be pulling his hair out.

Am I just selectively forgetting or are the scores to these games ridiculously high compared to past years?

Salvaged one of 3 against #25 UCONN who came to Kent, nice to see a top 25 team in Kent

I watched most or all of these games. Team and especially pitching vastly improved over past few weeks. We could have won all 3.
Hopefully it continues

It will need to continue. It’s April and Kent is already four games out.

Another ugly home loss today to a 7-18 team
8-0 before we even had a clue the game had started.
This program is a shambles.

Very disappointing that we have fallen so far.

I look for BG to win this weekend series. I thought so coming in. Their head coach is former MAC Pitcher of the Year and Kent State great Kyle Hallock (2008-2011). You know darn well he is going to have his guys prepared to play at Schoonover Stadium.

If only our guys were too.

RE: 2022 Baseball - Older and Older - 04-09-2022 02:58 PM

BG 1-15 on road entering this series.

Our pitching makes them look like 1927 Yankees

Well they have now won the first two... yikes

I started this thread asking for Duncan to go, and I am now pleading for it to happen. He cannot get the job done. We have become a below average program under his leadership.

I agree baseball is in the dumps but I wonder if it’s only because of Duncan. Wrestling is in the dumps, gymnastics is not winning mac championships at its usual rate and is missing out on NCAA tournaments quite often lately even though 60% of the teams make it, track has declined as has golf and field hockey. Is it the athletic director, the overall budget (especially for coaching), the facilities, the transfer portal, etc. Luckily football and mens basketball seem to be hanging in there. Maybe they have set priorities??

There are definitely some overall issues ... but I believe it's a little early in the tenure to point fingers at the AD, although everyone is certainly watching.

Personally - and I hate to say this because at one point it was a source of departmental pride - but it seems to me Kent probably sponsors too many sports on both the men and women's side.

Now, it's in the eye of the beholder which sports may need to be cut - I'M NOT GOING THERE - but I do think there has to be a realization that there are some sports that may have to go.

As for baseball, specifically, it seems Duncan just never seemed to get any traction going with his program. It has never seemed to have a program identity. If you look at football and basketball, both of those programs have a certain identity about them. Duncan's program doesn't seem to have that.

Just my opinion.

RE: 2022 Baseball - burden - 04-10-2022 07:00 PM

I wasn’t clear but I wasn’t giving an opinion on the current AD alone. Nielsen has to be included. It seems to me since Laing has left things have slowly gone downhill. Just one of the options though. There are others for sure. You might be right. They could be trying to do too much. Money only goes so far.

Cleveland and others All good valid points. All I will add is I believe donations are WAY down. It’s been about a year since I saw numbers but they were 50 % then of year before. So I’m talking 2020 vs 2019.
No reason to believe they have not fallen further. Few years ago Athletic donations were in 2 million annual area. I’m purely guessing from 2020 but I would surmise last year they were no more than $500-$700 K. Match this with the putrid attendance at ticketed events and revenue is totally dependent on student fees , and MAC revenue from TV . And of course the $4-5 million from our guaranteed Football paydays.

New AD has not made any effort to increase donor giving in my view.
The rest of the staff …..not fundraisers. Remember, we lost a few great folks in that area that left KSU and are doing well elsewhere.

Perhaps , Baseball is seeing impact of large budget cuts.
Full disclosure and information sharing are no longer part of the game plan. They won’t be getting another penny from me until I am satisfied money is used as specified. From mistakes they have made in writing to us that’s not the case. Our funds designated for one sport were used for another without our permission and I have letter from staff to prove it.
It’s very hard to comprehend what’s going on.

RE: 2022 Baseball - JimJoyce - 04-16-2022 05:29 PM

Kent was just swept in a doubleheader by Toledo. The Flashes gave up 10 runs in the final two innings of both games combined.
