Defense rank 8 on ESPN
8. Cincinnati Bearcats
2021 future defense ranking: 7

Scouting the Bearcats: Coach Luke Fickell's defense delivered in 2021, propelling Cincinnati all the way to the College Football Playoff. As expected, the unit loses plenty of star power, including six NFL draft picks and standouts at all three levels. But Fickell and his staff have prepared for this transition, and the defense likely will avoid any significant backsliding. The front seven projects well, especially since linemen Malik Vann and Jabari Taylor returned for their fifth seasons. Virginia transfer Jowon Briggs started six games in his first season with UC, and retains multiple years of eligibility and the skills to play both inside and outside. Cincinnati's priority is building depth for the fall but especially 2023 and 2024. Junior Eric Phillips appeared in nine games last season, but other younger linemen will be seeing their first significant action this fall. The team's only ESPN 300 recruit for 2022 is a defensive lineman in Tampa product Mario Eugenio.

Junior Deshawn Pace likely will lead the linebacker group through 2023 after recording a team-high four interceptions to go with 94 tackles (9.5 for loss) last fall. Senior Ty Van Fossen, who had 70 tackles and made 10 starts, is also back following nine starts in 2021. Sophomore Jaheim Thomas and senior Wilson Huber (three sacks) both played a lot last fall. Sophomore Jack Dingle emerged this spring and should help supply depth for several years. Cincinnati's secondary reload will be fascinating as All-Americans Sauce Gardner, Coby Bryant and others depart. Arquon Bush (42 tackles, three interceptions last fall) will occupy one cornerback spot through 2022, and sophomore Todd Bumphis ended the spring strong and could become a multiyear starter. Seniors Taj Ward and Justin Harris provide veteran depth, while Cincinnati has recruited well with Bumphis, Oliver Bridges and J.Q. Hardaway. Safety Ja'Von Hicks (29 career starts) is back for one final season, and Cincinnati will complement him with veteran Jacob Dingle and sophomores Bryon Threats and Armorion Smith.

Great update, thanks for sharing. What's encouraging here to me is that if this is close to accurate, even with an "okay offense" this team could still win 8 or 9 games against this schedule. But if the offense becomes a bit more dynamic (and/or scores lots more consistently on field goals) the upside is pretty exciting.

I would be surprised if Potter comes in and is a starter from day one. He has the physical tools, but remember he hasn’t played much the past three seasons and he coming off a foot and eye injury. He also is not familar with the system: My guess is he’ll be a #2, and start out playing limited snaps. Perhaps somewhere along the season it will all click for him and he becomes a #1, I just don’t see it right away.

Maybe, maybe not. I think he'll get plenty of snaps IF he is healthy. I really like the depth on the defensive line and in the linebacking group at this point. He doesn't need to start to be a big transfer.

RE: 2022 Football Depth Chart - BearcatMan - 05-17-2022 07:57 AM

Isn't Briggs back inside at DT now too? Everything I've heard and read has a starting DL of Vann, Briggs, and Taylor.

RE: 2022 Football Depth Chart - Lush - 05-17-2022 08:56 AM

lots to like in the secondary. i also wouldn't be surprised- if someone can reliably get them the ball- if this is one of better bearcat receiving corps. i consider the gunner kiel era to have the best crop. crops and corps carps and craps

RE: 2022 Football Depth Chart - natibeast2.0 - 05-17-2022 09:13 AM

I was going to keep Jackson first but figured with size and experience Potter may end up starting after a couple of games I’d not initially. D-Line is hardest for me on who will start and where. I also thought Jabari was strictly at nose but not sure on that. Briggs does seem to line up at nose mostly when he is out there.

I’m sure there are at least a few changes that will be needed once we get into summer ball so going to wait on further updates until then.

For what it is worth reports say he was healthy in spring practice and performed well. That time should have helped with rust removal.

is soph. OL Chris Collinsworth even in the equation for playing time? There was a tremendous response to UC signing him out of high school the year before. I thought he was red-shirted last year but the uc roster lists him as a soph this season.

The name is LUKE not Chris.

I suspect you are right that he should be shown as an RSF, as I find no playing stats of any games much less over 4 games.

Jabari is pretty clearly a 3-4 end IMO...and I think he's going to be lining up there. He is not large enough to hold the nose, plus, Briggs has him by 30 pounds. Might actually end up forcing a 4-man front in some scenarios given the bulk and athleticism up there (combined with the relatively green secondary).

Agreed. I'll wait for camp to begin before even worrying about any of this.

I admire your restraint beast, but frankly, I think you are being too kind. It's fine to question another person's post as Bearcatman did, but just vaguely claiming it's "wrong" with no real explanation (as the two posters just prior to your response essentially did) isn't helpful nor constructive and very poor form. I appreciate your effort and willingness to accept feedback. Those who don't should "put up or shut up" in my opinion.

Agreed, beast! Thank you for spending the time to put that together, and for graciously accepting constructive and not-so-constructive feedback.
