Or consider Jayden. I'm sure Penny had him in the weight room from the word go, but only last summer did the muscle mass get added. Your body adds muscle at its own pace and maturation level.

He is really who I was thinking about in regards to Bates. Jayden was pretty thin as well as a freshman and was 2 years older than Bates. It seems like most guys start being able to fill out in 20-22 year old age range.

Depends on the kid I guess...

Malcom came in looking like he does now.

And Duren is only 1 month older than Bates.

Of course it depends on the kid. Duren and Bates are obviously built completely different.

Bates has a frame that is much more Kevin Durant like while Duren has a frame that is much more Dwight Howard like.

Bates looks like putting on 30+ pounds of muscle will be a legit job for him and take a very coordinated meal plan and workout schedule. Duren looks like he could put on 30 pounds of muscle on a Kale and Seaweed diet.

Yeah...I think some kids put on muscle faster than others.

But I also think a kid has to focus on it...It you are trying to build muscle you gotta do much more than lift.

Kobe Bryant was never a muscled up guy in the NBA.

But for one season Kobe came out SWOLE. Put on 20lbs of muscle...Just to realize he didn't need it and lose it the next year.

I must say it gets old when THE FANBASE is called out because what maybe a 100 or so people say something negative online, hell it could be someone who pulls for a SEC team or some high school kid, a few comments get posted and THE WHOLE FANBASE sucks, drives me nuts. Everyone on this board could rip a player and that is what 100-200 people, we had over 14k at the game the other night, it's not the fanbase.

Same with Ja Morant, two idiots tell him he is better back on the bench and all I read from Calkins and MG and others was shame on the Grizz fans, it was two idiots.

And every single fanbase has that small subset of unrealistic and idiotic fans, it is in no way unique to Memphis.

I assure you that you can find a small number of Alabama fans who are saying Nick Saban is past his prime and it is time for him to go...

We’ve got 100-200 posters here? Is there a secret forum I’m unaware of?

Whatever the number, I think it’s way more than a subset. Many of my neighbors are sports fans. They are also perfectly normal (afaik), grounded, productive people. But when these fanatics start talking about their sports teams, they suddenly become unrealistic and idiotic (especially the Ole Miss clown). It’s the nature of the beast. They probably think the same of me.

Nor does he need to to be a difference maker in the NCAA tourney this year.

He definitely needs to put it on in the off season.

Because of how young he is it is very likely he does not put on a ton of weight. But a full year of college ball plus a an entire summer of training will still do wonders for him. He could very possibly be 3 to 4 years away from putting on that kind of muscle mass.

Or... you could turn him into a female, and let him attend 2 years of college...

Pretty sure I remember people saying similar things about Will Barton, especially his freshman year.

Remember all the idiots with the idiotic "addition by subtraction" posts made about Will?

I think Will's game transitioned perfectly to the NBA. Maybe even better then it did to the college game tbh. He was an elite rebounder for his size and position.

He was also nearly 2-3 years older than Bates his freshman year.

I doubt Will would have been very good as a 17 year old freshman.

A lot of people here continue to ignore the fact he is supposed to be in High School. Have we ever had a 17 year old freshman before him? I imagine he is the youngest tiger in school history.

Lay off the kid and let him grow.

Agreed, as long as Penny can keep him from imploding due to lack of confidence or other folks in his ear I think he's going to be a great player. Shot technique is there he just can't create his own shots right now and I think that shakes his confidence which leads to him forcing it.

Will was a much better ball handler. I think Emoni can be a better shooter

Yes, comparatively as just freshman. But I think Will was a 19 year old freshman and Bates is a 17 year old freshman. Bates will be just as good with the ball in two years as Will was.

Will was old for a freshman he was held back so he could be in the same class as his brother. Hopefully we can get 2 years out of Emoni but at this point I doubt it. But I don’t think another year is going to make him a much better ball handler. It sure didn’t help Lomax or Harris. They make the same mistakes they made 3 years ago

You think the talent level is the same between those? People have ceilings. Alo pretty much reached his in high school. I disagree on Harris, he has progressed a lot.

Talent doesn’t have anything to do with ball handling imo. Well not a bunch anyway

And Tyler Harris is very talented probably more athletic than Emoni. His problem is he’s a foot shorter

Look I don’t mean any disrespect towards Bates, but I’ve seen lottery picks and he isn’t one. And any team that drafts him is going to find that out. He can still be a good college player but apparently his family has crossed the point of no return in that regard.

Emoni can will get better in almost every aspect. He is just a 17 year old teenager.

Literally every aspect of his game is going to improve.

I really have nothing to discuss if you genuinely believe ball handling and talent are not directly related to one another... I can pretty much guarantee you will not find any person making a living in the basketball world that agrees with that.

There is a reason Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving can do things with a basketball that I would never be able to do no matter how much work I put into ball handling skills, and that is talent. Their ceiling is simply much higher than mine...

And my conversation had nothing to do with a lottery pick. It was simply you comparing a 19 year old freshman (who really should have been a sophomore in college) to a 17 year old freshman (who should really be a junior in high school). I was simply pointing out that in 2-3 years that Emoni's ball handling will be much better and likely at the level or beyond that of Will Barton's.

Bates will be a lottery pick next season when he is eligible.
