Grading the 2021 Football/Basketball Programs - RockyMTNTiger - 12-30-2021 05:15 PM

Grading the Tiger Football and Basketball programs:

Football: A solid C. Had a chance at a C+ but their bowl got torpedoed. Even after numerous mind boggling play calls, loss of numerous leads, and a Defense that made you want to pull your hair out - even with all that, they managed to break even on the year.

So... overall, while this was a cover your face with both hands and peek through your fingers to see if: A) the Defense could get off the field on 3rd and 75 or so (The answer was every once in a while) - and, B) Whether the Offense running game could break 100 yds a game (The answer was usually a coin toss).

Basketball: A solid D+. They did win a nice NIT early in 2021 but after that the program has descended into a sort of clown show, haphazard, un-orchestrated wretched chaos with a rich gift for an uncanny hapless ability to figure out different ways to lose close games to inferior programs. All this while providing the fan base never-ending high drama.

All that said - this team has the talent to catch fire and if they do late in the season they can sweep the AAC tourney and even win a couple of games from their #11 Seed. We'll see I suppose.

So...for me, a solid C for our primary programs alongside the happy news that we are now R-1.

All the Best and Happy New Year to all Tigers,

Football gets a C mediocre

Basketball so far is an incomplete

RE: Grading the 2021 Football/Basketball Programs - jsw3ent - 12-30-2021 05:49 PM

FB---D----unacceptable
BB---C----won the NIT in 21---6-5 so far this season in 21

RE: Grading the 2021 Football/Basketball Programs - Atlanta - 12-30-2021 09:13 PM

FB -D
BB -C (20-21), F so far this season. Too much talent to have our losses. Ironically the talent many times sits while Penny's boys get the PT.

RE: Grading the 2021 Football/Basketball Programs - southpaw1 - 12-30-2021 09:33 PM

I took the title to mean the current season for each program.

FB - C-
BB - D

You’re right. I didn’t read his post. Just the title. If you include the NIT title then BB gets a D+. The program has a vastly underachieved.

Weak

Football: D-

The team seemed lackadaisical at times during the games. Offensively, the play calling was bad. Special Teams was a flat out disaster (Tulsa). Couldn't hold on to a lead and finished the game (specifically Temple and UTSA). Got the benefit from the officiating blender against Mississippi State (even though I do believe we would still win that game). We just didn't blow out a team. Every game was pretty much a game into the fourth quarter. No running game for the second year in a row. Offensive line and the receiving core took a step back. Defensively we weren't bad. We didn't improve much on the defensive side, but didn't took a step back. Coaching staff is just average. When you have an average head coach, average assistant coaching staff, and an average roster, what do we get? Average play.

Basketball F:
Why? Congratulations on them winning the NIT, but who cares? Do High School recruits care about that? Are we celebrating that today? They played well down the stretch to finish the season last year. But they had to play well to cover up the losses from the beginning of the year. Seems like deja vu, huh?
Coach somewhat lied regarding vaccination reports. Looked horrendous against Iowa State. We now have a Quad 3 loss and now a Quad 4 loss. The Georgia loss is now a Quad 4 loss. Yeah, we beat Alabama, but doesn't matter since we lost to Tulane. Yeah, we do have two talented Freshman on our team, but they're just trying to get into the NBA. Penny is a coach here for marketing and publicity stunts. 0-3 on road games. We went from the #9 ranked team in the country, to having to win a conference title to make the tournament.

No, the call on the field was correct. Just the replay official made the mistake by not reviewing the play, which was reviewable by the official waving his arms. Again, I still believe we would win the game if the ball was put back deep into Memphis' territory. However, it's okay to say that we got the benefit of the doubt by an officiating mistake.

All the Best and Happy New Year to all Tigers,

Football

preseason picked mid-pack in AAC and they did that, plus continued bowl eligibility streak. A couple of losses they shouldn't have had but then a couple of wins, not predicted.

A solid "C"

Basketball

Men are still a work in progress but right now nowhere near where they were projected. "D"

Women are well ahead of projections at this time but with SOS so far no way of telling if improvements are legitimate or result of schedule. Have to give them a "C+" right now but can go up or down depending on the rest of the season.

Would a review have nullified the TD ? At the time people were saying Austin knew the rules and Miss St players didn't --did the ref blow the whistle stopping play ?---just asking

The overall ratings I gave were for 2021 results. If I were to grade against expectations the grades would be different: Lower.

How all that works its way into 2022 begins right now with our basketball team. Last year we sucked early and then turned things around. We can still do the same this year and work our way into he NCAA by simply winning the ACC tournament. If that we're to happen - and we win a couple of games in the NCAA - then 2022 Men's Basketball will have worked out in the B+/A- area and would be marked as perhaps significant progress for Penny as a coach.

For Football in general and Silverfield in particular, 2022 is perhaps a pivotal year. If Silverfield has a successful conclusion to this year's recruiting - and puts together 8 or more wins - would that satisfy the Silverfield critics?
