Offseason FB Roster Outlook - MarginalDuke - 12-28-2021 07:42 PM

As I was looking at the roster, JMU returns a lot of production for next year. Two big positions hold question marks (QB and CB) but you have feel good about what is returning. There's a good chance we have a real veteran team for 2023 as most of our roster is R-Jr. or younger (Partially due to Covid eligibility but I think we were younger than some teams when Covid struck and so while some teams saw a boost this year, we'll see it in 2 years)

QB
Loses Cole Johnson, Kyle Adams
  1. Todd Centeio (R-Sr.) / Transfer from Colorado St.
  2. Billy Atkins (R-Fr.)
  3. Alonza Barnett (Fr.)
  4. Chase Hart (R-So.)

RB
Loses Lorenzo Bryant -
  1. Percy Agyei-Obese (R-Sr.)
  2. Kaelon Black (R-Fr./R-So.)* (Medical Redshirt possibility?)
  3. Latrele Palmer (R-Jr.) -
  4. AJ Davis (R-Sr.) / Pitt Transfer
  5. Solomon Vanhorse (R-Jr.)
  6. Austin Douglas (R-So.)

WR
Loses Scott Bracey, Antwane Wells Jr.
  1. Kris Thornton (R-Sr.)
  2. Reggie Brown (R-Jr.)
  3. Kobay White (Gr.) / Transfer from Boston College
  4. Terrance Greene Jr. (Gr.) / Transfer from Monmouth
  5. Devin Ravenel (R-Sr.)
  6. Kevin Curry Jr. (R-Jr.)

TE
Loses Clayton Cheatham, Noah Turner
  1. Drew Painter (R-Sr.)
  2. Kelly Mitchell (R-So.)
  3. Zach Horton (R-Fr.)

O-Line positions I had to piece together based on previous Two-Deeps and HS experience.

LT
Loses Liam Fornadel
  1. Tyler Stephens (R-So.)
  2. Ronald Altman (R-So.)

LG
  1. Tyshawn Wyatt (R-So.)
  2. Scott Hummel (R-Fr.)

C
Loses JT Timming
  1. Tanner Morris (R-So.)

RG
  1. Cole Potts (R-So.)
  2. Josh Toner (R-Fr.)

RT
  1. Nick Kidwell (R-Jr.)
  2. Jaelin Montgomery (R-Fr.)
  3. Kyle Smith (R-Jr.)

We have a platoon of OL guys coming in (many who drew good interest) that will fill some of those holes, hopefully we get a few FCS transfers we have been targeting:
Wesley Bostic (6-4/285)
Carter Miller (6-2/280)
Joseph Simmons (6-6/310)
Carter Sweazie (6-3/290)

DE
Loses Bryce Carter
  1. Abi Nwabuoku-Okonji (R-Jr.)
  2. Mikail Kamara (R-Fr./So.)* Not sure what happened to him, climbed the Two-Deep in spring, not sure if he was injured all year
  3. Antonio Colclough (R-Jr.)

NT
Loses Mike Greene
  1. James Carpenter (R-So.)
  2. Jordan Funk (R-Jr.)
  3. Tyrique Tucker (Fr.)

NG
  1. Tony Thurston (R-Jr.)
  2. Jamare Edwards (R-Sr.) / Transfer from Marshall
  3. Tyler Negron (R-So.)

STUD
  1. Isaac Ukwu (R-Sr.)
  2. Jalen Green (R-So.)
  3. Amar Thomas (Fr.)

MIKE LB
Loses Kelvin Azanama
  1. Mateo Jackson (R-Sr.)
  2. Seth Naotala (R-So.)
  3. Taurus Jones (R-So.)

WILL LB
  1. Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey (R-Sr.)
  2. Jailin Waler (So.)
  3. Skylar Martin (So.)

ROVER
Loses MJ Hampton, Jalen Phelps
  1. Chris Chukwuneke (R-Jr.)

SS
Loses Wayne Davis
  1. Josh Sarratt (R-Jr.)
  2. Francis Meehan (R-Jr.)

FS
  1. Sam Kidd (R-Sr.)
  2. Que Reid (R-Jr.)

A lot of names to throw in at safety to see what sticks. A lot of newcomers and safety was very reliable so we didn't get much of a look at depth. A lot holes to fill but we have puzzle pieces at least :
Jarius Reimonenq (R-Jr.) / Transfer from Ark St.
Deon Jones (Gr.) / Transfer from BC
Jebril Murray (R-So.)
Jordan White (R-So.)
Kye Holmes (So.)
Messiah Russell (R-Fr.)

BCB
Loses Greg Ross
  1. Xavier Cokley (R-So.)
  2. Jamari Currence (R-Jr.)
  3. Sammy Malignaggi (R-So.)

FCB
Loses Taurus Carroll, Wesley McCormick (Not sure if he gets a medical waiver)
  1. Jordan Swann (R-Sr.)
  2. Antonio Webb (R-So.)
  3. John Ransom (R-So.) / Transfer from VT

Based on this, our three big questions will be: 1) who succeeds Cole at QB?; 2)Will our young OL continue to progress (in Wrobo we trust)?; 3) Will our production to fill in behind safety and DL departures keep those trains rolling?

All things considered, this is a pretty good hand over the next two years to transition us into the SBC from an experience standpoint. Now the question is can our guys step up to the new level and I think they should be competitive.

Thanks for catching that, updated the original post. A lot of mental gymnastics to make sure I had all of the years right.

Love having these posts as a reference for when the season gets closer. Thanks.

I guess another growing pain next year will be starting fresh with our specialists, LS, P and PK. We’re losing a ton of experience and accomplishments right there. Going with new players in those positions along with PR will be trying at times I’m sure.

RE: Offseason FB Roster Outlook - MarginalDuke - 01-05-2022 11:37 AM

With Wells announcing his entry into the portal, this adds a question mark in the receiving core. We got some production out of Rav and Reggie late but those are some big shoes to fill and probably can’t. I’d like to see 6’3” WR Max James from Lake Braddock breakout.

Not sure where to put this and didn't want to start a new threat. Not a roster move but an off season move.

Cignetti with Dave Riggert on the QB room:

Billy Atkins: "has a really nice future"
Alonza Barnett: "We are really high on Alonza. He will be coming in mid-term"
Todd Centeio: Fits the starter experience at the G5 level and will be a veteran presence for the room. Will have to earn the starting role but they think they can take his game to another level - good arm and accurate.

I won’t rush to judgement but man you think there would have been a good lesson earlier in the season to avoid situations like this.

Breeze Wrote:JMU redshirt sophomore running back Latrele Palmer was allegedly arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22. The offense is listed in the Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) arrest report as “DWI: DRUGS, 1ST OFFENSE.”

Palmer was allegedly arrested at “Reservoir St. / Holly Ct.,” according to the arrest report.

JMU Athletics confirmed to The Breeze that they have a student athlete by that name and provided the following statement to The Breeze:

“We had a disciplinary incident with a football student-athlete over the weekend, which has already been addressed in line with department policy.”

An important note that I'll add.

RE: Offseason FB Roster Outlook - LovethoseDukes - 01-24-2022 05:36 PM

And I would imagine if he was given medication that strong that he was also told to not operate a vehicle or any other machinery. I am sorry he chose to drive a car when impaired, but he did....hopefully he owns up to it.

If Palmer’s post-surgery medication is truly at the root of his erratic driving and arrest I imagine there will be some leniency shown, however, it won’t get him off scot-free. Thank goodness he wasn’t so impaired he caused an accident that hurt himself and others.

Exactly, luckily this wasn’t a catastrophic event you can not take back. Hopefully it is a moment he realizes the error in his ways and how to make sure this lapse in judgment doesn’t end up defining who he is.

I agree that some leniency should be shown here. I think a one game suspension is appropriate.

Thought I had read that Bentley left the program; i.e., QB.
