Are we on the verge of a massive pro sports shake up? - Fighting Muskie - 12-13-2021 01:44 PM

One of the biggest factors in the relocation of pro sports franchises are disputes over new stadiums and arenas.

I’m looking around the big 4 sports leagues, particularly the NBA and NHL, most of their oldest facilities were built in the 1990s. Nearly everything older than that has been replaced or dramatically refurbished recently. Could we be on the verge of a massive uptick in relocations as franchises and municipalities quibble over the finances of replacing said facilities?

Nope. Pro sports financial model is as stable as ever. Same goes for franchises.

There are a handful of franchises in limbo this decade (Rays, A's, Coyotes, Jaguars) but that's the typical number for a decade. We saw 4 in the 2010s (Thrashers, Raiders, Rams, Chargers) and 4 in the 2000s (Grizzlies, Hornets, Expos, SuperSonics).
