Preseason MEAC favorite is off to a strong start with a D1 record of 3-1.

The gave beaten William and Mary at home plus Bowling Green and Tennessee State on the road. The got blown out by Xavier 88-48.

Considering how we played vs Delaware State, this one may be tough. Hopefully there is a strong home crowd on Wednesday

Norfolk State has a game today vs Hampton that will be on ESPN2 at 8PM and one tomorrow versus Grambling on ESPNU at 6PM as part of the HBCU challenge

Norfolk State - GAME 6 - B_Hawk06 - 11-28-2021 07:50 PM

For any of you that care to get a look at our next opponent, they are tipping off in 10 minutes on ESPN vs Hampton (who I believe we “secret” scrimmaged).

Could be a good chance to see their schemes on offense, defense and key players to watch.

Norfolk down 6 but have some size and have seemingly dominated the boards but not the actual case. Bankston is good down low. Hampton hitting 3 balls mainly.

Norfolk looks to be about to make a push. And, they definitely prefer a faster pace. We may be able to get some TO against them.

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6 - billthebighawksfan - 11-28-2021 10:13 PM

Interesting team. They only shot 6 3-balls. It’s an older team that is experienced and they will be 8-1 coming into Trask. They won’t shy away from pace so it may be a fun game to watch.

Their leading scoring guard looks smooth and if you foul him, it is 2 points. Don’t foul him on drive or shot.

This may be the best team we face this season.

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6 - 82hawk - 11-30-2021 07:09 AM

Here are their five starters all year. Nine games in.

Joe Bryant 6'1" 220lbs. Sr. G 15ppg, 4.3 reb, 12-33(3 pt) .364, 97.5% FT(39-40), 27.3 min
Kris Bankston 6'8" 230lbs. RSr F 12ppg, 7.0 reb, 78% FG(46-59), 25.1 min
Christian Ings 6'2" 185lbs Jr. G 11.3ppg, 2.4 reb, 5-10 3pt., 56.7% FT, 24.4 min
Nyzaiah Chambers 6'7" 230 lbs. Jr F 4.8 ppg, 3.6 reb, 70%fg(19-27), 14.8 min
Daryl Anderson 6'6" 185lbs. Jr. G 4.0 ppg, 2.8 reb, 30.8% 3pt(8-26), 23.1 min

Bench

Tyrese Jenkins 6'6" 200 lb Jr G/F 7.7 ppg, 4.2 reb, 41.9% 3pt(13-31), 22.1 min
Cahiem Brown 6'5" 200 lb RJr G 8.2 ppg, 4 reb, 16.7% 3pt, 65% ft(28-43), 16.2 min
Jalen Hawkins 6'2" 185lb, SrG 8.8 ppg, 3.4 reb, 14.3% 3pt(1-7), 18.6 min

Norfolk State has taken 149 three pointers compared to 260 for their opponents. Joe Bryant is their primary offensive threat shooting 36.4% from three with about 1/3 of his shots coming from three. But if he is fouled he's automatic from the FT line at 97.5%.

Tyrese Jenkins comes off the bench for 22 minutes per game, and is their best three point shooter at almost 42%. More than half his shots come from three.

The NS roster looks a lot like an ideal Siddle roster with a bunch of 6'5" players who can rotate. They have committed129 TO's while opponents have had 161, and NS had 93 steals(10 per game) while opponents have caused 48 steals.

Norfolk State has guards who can drive and big men who can rebound. They're going to try and get in the paint and score or go to the FT line. UNCW is going to drive to the paint and look to score or kick out to the three point line. Our pressure will be important to run the shot clock and get them out of their offense. NS can run with UNCW, but they aren't a huge three point threat. Our best chance to win is to get hot from three.

While our offense is struggling here is a nice defensive state

The Seahawks rank first in the CAA in blocks (4.17) and third in steals (8.17) after six games. Junior forward Amari Kelly stands second in the circuit with 1.17 rejections per game.

The blocks is surprising! Even Coach seemed surprised when Mike brought that up yesterday

We are favored by three with a 40% chance of winning. Over/under is 139.

I’ll never place a bet against UNCW, but if I were someone else I sure would.

Rim protection is essential given that quick press breaks can lead to easy layup opportunities against the “last man standing” on D. When Kelly is in especially, these opportunities are limited for the opponent.

But your scouting report says they are the exact opposite of a UNCW team . It sounds more like the old men vs boys at the YMCA with a hope that UNCW hit s a bunch of 3 balls ?

Good point. He could be quite important tonight.

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6 - billthebighawksfan - 12-01-2021 12:09 PM

If Hawks make better than 3/10 from 3,they likely have a statistical advantage given the volume differential and their average 2 ball make FG percentage (if remembering right/ could be off).

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6 - SEA33HAWK - 12-01-2021 12:55 PM

NS is a solid team. It will take a total team effort to beat them. This is where our guys need to play within their strengths. Nobody needs to think they should put the whole team on their shoulders in order to win. I believe NS will squash any individual play. We need better movement and penatration to make things happen. Along with a solid full court havoc defense. But we have to score better to make that happen.

I'm focused on the size of the players. They are guard heavy with a bunch of 6'5/6'6" guys with a smallish five. Looks like an ideal Siddle roster but they don't press or rely on the three.
