I love Coach Clark, but he is so conservative. I was jumping up and down screaming for him to go for it on 4th down and an inch to go. If we can’t make an inch with a back like McBride and the jumbo package, we wouldn’t deserve to win anyway.

It was the exact same thing in the Marshall game. We had fourth and one around there 40 yard line late in the second half and we planted. We also got the ball back with over a minute left and a time out, and just ran to clock out. We didn’t even get possession to come out of the half of that game either. He coaches scared, old-school, dumb football. There’s no sort of higher level analytics involved. I really can’t stand it.

...meanwhile, Auburn just went for it on 4th and 1 on their own 35 yd. line... and failed. and they are UP 14-7in the Second...
All that to say, each situation is different. For US, as a road dog who is holding on to a 1/2 TD lead, you HAVE to go for it in that situation... the ol' 'Checkers or Wreckers' scenario...

More of us would have lived with it, too, had we failed because we knew we were playing to win and put the game away.
We don’t play to win.

Some folks are saying that the players and coaches were on the sideline while watching the chains and ran out of time to figure out which play to call. Seems like you should be ready to run it if it's short anyways just in case.

The answer is I just don’t know. It’s tempting and a fairly high percentage play. But the defense had really played well. But if we know we’re going to run a soft 2 deep zone with Harris and rush 3 punting just doesn’t make sense

They didn't start the play clock until after the measurement. No play to call if you punt , if it was a first down you would be in victory formation, so the only decision would have been what play to run. I think I would be even more upset to find out they could not figure out a play to run on 4th and 2 inches while the measurement was taking place, just shows more incompetence with the coaches.
