Penny might as well have no staff because it's clear he doesn't listen to them. I wish just one time he would angry at something, someone versus worrying about how cool he looks.

Year 4 and nothing has changed.

It's puzzling for sure.

Its not puzzling, Boogie left and at least 2 decommited, all or partly because they know Lomax is going to get minutes no matter what. All you Lomax defenders (and I love the kid,, he just should not be starting ) please explain this team's players per hundred possession stats over last 4 games. Lomax and Nolley are tied for 3rd in minutes. Lomax is 11th in defensive rating and 10th on offense, only ahead of Dandridge, Lawson and Camden.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/memphis/2022.html

Boogie was no elite PG in any universe and I loved the kid. I wish he hadn't left. I don't disagree with any of the rest of it though.

I think it's Penny's mindset that we are going to play position-less ball irredamngardless and that all of our players are should be capable ball handlers. We don't have one single excellent ball handler. None of them take care of it like they need to.

But hey, I'm just a frustrated fan who still loves this team. Anything I, or many here, say in the heat of a close game needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

That's just not his approach. I wish he was more animated but he just isn't. I don't want him to be Cal in his first few years here, cursing and screaming at players, but I do wish he'd show some level of aggression and assertiveness.

Damn, I almost forgot, we are 4-0 and ranked number 11 in the country. We have what may be the most elite center in college hoops and a whole squad that is infinitely more capable than what they showed us last night. We may have needed a game like that one as a wake up call. We can't just walk out on the court and expect player and team rankings to win games for us.

If Penny isn't screaming at them over 26 turnovers and making them run nothing but passing drills the entire weekend then something is wrong. Although I'm not sure it would matter. These kids have been playing ball most of their lives, if they haven't been shown or figured out how to deliver a sharp crisp pass by now I'm not sure they can learn it. SO damn many lazy passes.

If WKU’s towel boy wasn’t on fire from downtown the score looks a little better, but we have to clean up turnovers or we’re going to lose to a disciplined team with less talent in the future.

Which doesn't negate the fact that Bates was a turnover machine tonight. He has a bit of an excuse given he's a 17 year old high school senior. There is no excuse for ALo.

Bates had 5 points and 4 turnovers

2-10 from the floor

Ouch

Bates is 17. Alo is 22 at least

Pointing out the obvious doesn't mean we are down on the kid. He just had a bad night, there's no denying it.

Comparing a freshman to a senior who has been in Penny’s system since 6 grade is spot on imo. The Lomax experiment is way past over. Time to play someone else. Lester, Nolley, Bates, Earl, Tyler even Williams at point power forward. That “ball handler” dribbled into 2 half court traps in the last 3 minutes.

Alo had too many turnovers

And was also huge in settling this team that could have lost this game with timely assists and even with the turnovers he was a primary reason we won

Bates had 5 points, 4 boards, and 4 turnovers, 2 assists and no steals and was unsettling and while he is a tremendous player who will be key in whether we make a final four but tonight he played like a freshman and it would have lost us the game absent Alo
Lomax had 5 points, 3 boards and 6 turnovers, 4 assists and 4 steals and a block and was settling as hell

Yes, the 6 turnovers were frustrating, but if that is all you can see when you watch Alo than you have the problem

This

The couch potato coaches have neither court vision nor arena insight. Plus they have no insight as to what’s going on other than game time.

They don’t get it. No one is defending ALo’s Turnovers. But he was the best player we had for the job of winning last night’s game. We won.

Last year people were killing ALo. He turned things around towards the end of the season.

By getting hurt and letting Boogie take over?

And he, by no means, won the game last night. Duren won it. Several other players contributed and most made some really stupid mistakes.

Last year we really did not have other options. This year we do have other options and options with much much much higher upside...

So true lol

We need to solve the PG issue.

Minot?

You playing Minot ahead of Lomax...

Yes. Those are your 7 best players. They should get the majority of the minutes. If Alo is as bad as he was last night you might as well give his mins to Tyler or Jayden; at least they have to be guarded at the 3 point line. Minot and Nolley should be your first two off the bench.

RE: ***The Official Western Kentucky vs Memphis Basketball Thread (11/19)*** - Poolshrk111 - 11-20-2021 11:22 AM

Timberlake
Bates
LQ
Williams
Duren

Nolley and Minot first in

Leaves you two spots, 1) goes to Lawson as a backup big and the other is 1 of Alo, Harris or Jayden.

Any other coach in the country wouldn’t play Alo, Tyler or Jayden over Earl, Bates, Nolley and Q. And even Boogie.

and passed the ball to players already in traps multiple times. Someone in the game thread said "ALo only had 6 to's. Seemed like so many more" yeah because he was solely responsible for about 15 turnovers last night. His defense is still bad. I saw last night, when he was in the game, WK would drive straight at him over and over.
