After watching 3 "real" games and the exhibitions i've started to form some opinions, my opinions of course mean nothing, but hey.. that's generally what this forum is for.
- Bates is perhaps the best raw talent we've had in a decade, if he's not the best he's in the discussion. All facets of the game seem easy for him.. and while he doesn't appear to be the worlds greatest athlete he's not bad, and a couple of years of college and strength may make him a beast.
- Duren is the best big man we've had in maybe two decades. no offense to Cisse, but Duren is much more fluid, plays better overall defense, and actually helps at the offensive end. He's not 6'11, but he plays like it.
- Timberlake has a long way to go, appears to be overweight and rusty. i understand he was once considered a one and done, but the injury has ended any of that discussion. looks like a 4 year player.
- Tyler Harris looks real nice as the 3rd option in the offense, and should flourish. I've always like his skills, and i'm thrilled he's back.
- If Nolley will embrace his 6th man roll he adds a huge spark off the bench. i expect him to be here another year.. not athletic enough to go to the NBA, and you don't leave a top 10 program to play in Europe.
- Williams seems to have accepted a role as the "godfather", doesn't need the ball, doesn't pout.. i wish we had 4 more of him.
- i was in favor of the Lawsons coming, but i don't see how this ends well. Unless there's something going on with Chandler we don't know about i don't think he stays for 5-7 minutes a game. i expected and still expect more from him and expect a nice career from Jonathan.
- Lester has been consistent, but not the team leader. by the end of last year the team appeared to lean on him, but so far he seems to have drifted to the background a bit. If he can be a bit more assertive and steady the team we may be lethal.
- Alo and Malcom are what they are, nice rotation players. i'm glad they are both here. Same for Jayden, nice rotation player who can fill a role.
- i think Penny has been experimenting with lineups.. we played small ball last night for an extended period. The rotation should settle in as the year progresses.
IF ( big if ) we can establish the "dog" mentality we had at the end of last year we will be a national contender.. the mix of size, talent, experience and shooting (for the first time in a while) is outstanding. We will need Malcom and Chandler to be able to play big at times, but overall we look better than i had expected.

I hope every Tiger has his day with this team, and I expect that will happen.
Our opponents can't possible prepare for every player on this team, and if they shutdown one or two, there are six or seven more waiting to pounce.

In 3 games Bates is shooting 75% from 2 and 50% from 3. Probably needs to shoot more than the 9 shots a game he's currently taking. Oddly enough only 57% from the line. Needs some work on turnovers too. He could score 30 or 40 on any night if he was asked to.
Chandler got some of the jitters out last night. He's not a scorer but he could fill in when we have foul trouble. I honestly thought it helped getting his first shot to fall.
Malcolm will probably have 3-5 bad games this year to 1 good game. Minott should be the first or second guy off the bench.
Some of the lineups last night were quite bad. I don't think you should ever play ALo and Timberlake together unless Timberlake gets better on the offensive side. If you do it's like last year playing Baugh and ALo. Defense is really good but you have two guys on offense that can't and don't usually try to score.

Malcolm right now can get you some rebounds and gives some size
But he simply MUST get better offensively. That will be key later.
And all of this is in the context of not winning games but making a deep tourney run or winning it all. Memphis will be good regardless.
Agree Bates is incredibly talented. We always cringe when kids take bad threes. But he can make them. He will have shooting slumps as everyone does. Harris will also not shoot as well as he did last night but he will earn and give valuable minutes. His defense at times last night was more exciting than his offense
Agree about Nolley. Just a really good college basketball player. Agree that Earl looks a little overweight but still feel like he will get numbers and minutes up. Williams too, although he should probably dribble and reach a little less. Zero worries about Lester. Just another really good college basketball player that will do what it takes, especially with a handful of really talented teammates.
Western KY next. They are 1-2 and have lost to South Carolina and Minnesota. RPI in the 240s, NET 81 ELO 105. For perspective S. Louis NET is now 43. So early though.

My thoughts on lineups and who should be given minutes. Some lineups dominate and some really struggle. Here is who I would play...
These 7 are for sure:
Lomax - can be frustrating...but ball moves so much better offensively with him.
Emoni
Nolley
Lester
Williams
Duren
Minott - love this kid. Think he would score 15 a game with 20 plus min. And it would a good efficient 15 points.
Shouldn't play ... but coach is playing:
-Jayden: too many turnovers, stops ball movement, not a playmaker (but thinks he is). He is so frustrating if you really watch. Name one thing he does really well? Shouldn't be playing.
-Dandridge: Just too many mistakes, tries to do things he can't do. If he would just rebound and stick backs...fine...but he isn't content with that. Cannot have unnecessary turnovers from this position.
-Earl: Hate to say it...but on the offensive end say what he does good...shooting? no assists? ... not really... turnovers? yes. Agree his defense is good. But just not seeing this. And no way this dude is an NBA player. Doesn't do any one thing good enough.
Should play more:
Chandler Lawson: I would use Chandler as the backup big man instead of Dandridge. Knows how to play. Doesn't make nearly as many mistakes as Malcolm and knows his role. Use him as backup 4 and 5.
Tyler Harris: I would give Tyler minutes in the first half of each game to see if he is hot. If so...let him play. If not...he stays out.
So those are my 9: Lomax, Emoni, Nolley, Lester, Williams, Duren, Minott, C. Lawson, and Tyler.
You shorten this rotation with the right guys and you will run people out of the building.

Eh... I have no problem with a large rotation early on. I am sure it will tighten up as the season progresses. And we have seen some odd lineups that we will never see against better teams or in closer games.
- Timberlake, it is far too early to make limit his minutes and bench him. New team, coming off a sever injury but we know he has tons of talent. You have to give him time to find his role, knock off the rust and get into game shape.
- Malcolm, I agree. He is like Alo - When they play within their role instead of trying to do more than their skill set allows then they are valuable role players. When they try to do too much then they become massive liabilities.
- Chandler, I have seen absolutely nothing from him that makes me think he should be on the floor more. I have been shocked by how slow and unathletic he looks in the minutes he does get
- Tyler, I have always liked Tyler. He has a role on this team and when he gets hot he should never come off the court, like we saw last night. But when he is cold he should not be on the court at all

Chandler was solid role player for very good Oregon team. Guy can be effective if given opportunity. Don't need him to do much. Just play solid with minimal mistakes.
I just disagree on Jayden. Ball sticks...forces things....slow. Every major run last night was him out of the game I believe. Doesn't make the easy pass. Struggling bringing the ball up the court. Got picked. Just frustrating.
Don't disagree on Earl's upside...but can't ignore he is struggling pretty bad. He is worth being patient.

Tyler quickness made a difference last night. He did exactly what he should do last night. Come in as an offensive spark. If Nolley, Lester are not hitting 3’s then you try Tyler.
Penny is not trying lineups. He played who wasn’t in foul trouble. But late in the 1st half, he had Lester, Minott, Duran, Williams, and Dandridge with 2 fouls. That’s why he went small. Tyler made it work. His 3’s stretched the lead out.
I don’t think Minott is strong enough to play the 4 but he’s better than I thought at the 4. His size causes trouble.
I love bring Emoni along slowly, but you can see he’s figuring it out. Him and Duran on the pick and roll is deadly.

But you are not giving Earl that grace. At least not initially, you do seem to have softened.
Earl and Chandler are BOTH struggling. But Earl has way more upside.
Although I did think Chandler looked much better last night.

i think that's a reference to my assertion that tyler is awesome as the 3rd option on offense. Too many times in his previous stint here he was the primary option, and that's a tough ask for a 5'9 guy... When the defense can't really focus on him he gets open easier, and can be killer.
i accidently left Minot off my earlier thoughts.. most other years we would be dancing about him, now he's not even a likely starter all year. overall he's more fluid than i had hoped, and seems to have an excellent feel for the game. also seems more agreeable to go inside and mix it up, and i love that

This team has so many really talented guys, it is really hard to pick the second best of the bunch (Bates is the clear #1, IMO).
The single biggest issue is at PG. ALO is best at getting the ball across half court, but not an outstanding PG. Earl needs to recover form the surgery (get back in the groove, so to speak) and settle in at point. Bates turns it over too often to advance the ball. If CPH gets this issue solved, we will challenge for a Final 4 berth, and possibly beyond.
Think about it - Nolley, Lester, Duren, Bates, and whomever else can be the facilitator and this team is fantastic. Not to mention Minot or Earl or Chandler or Malcom, or any others. goodness.

- Alo and Malcom are what they are, nice rotation players. i'm glad they are both here. Same for Jayden, nice rotation player who can fill a role.
- i think Penny has been experimenting with lineups.. we played small ball last night for an extended period. The rotation should settle in as the year progresses.
IF ( big if ) we can establish the "dog" mentality we had at the end of last year we will be a national contender.. the mix of size, talent, experience and shooting (for the first time in a while) is outstanding. We will need Malcom and Chandler to be able to play big at times, but overall we look better than i had expected.
