South Carolina - KevMo4UAB - 11-14-2021 07:18 PM

South Carolina (91) beat WKU (104) this evening 75-64. The KenPom ratings haven’t been updated yet.

South Carolina won the rebounding war 46-28.

I’ll have more info and stats later regarding the upcoming UAB at South Carolina game.

RE: South Carolina - KevMo4UAB - 11-14-2021 07:50 PM

UAB (60) at South Carolina (85)

KenPom has USC winning this one 75-74.

They are 2-1 on the season, with their loss to Princeton (153). They have beaten USC Upstate (333) and WKU (111).

South Carolina starting five players today had heights of 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-10, and 7-0.

KenPom has South Carolina going 7-11 in the SEC and 16-15 overall. That would be a major improvement over last season when they finished 4-12 and 6-15.

Their size in the front court might be an issue. We haven't been a great rebounding team.

South Carolina’s preseason All-SEC selection Keyshawn Bryant is out for their first five games, including the UAB game on Thursday.

The size difference will be apparent as their whole team is just really big but noticeable when they played WKU was all the turnovers they had...and WKU wasn't even pressing or trying to turn them over per say. Will be interesting how they handle our constant pressure.

RE: South Carolina - THE_LEGEND - 11-15-2021 10:44 AM

WKU was out 1 and maybe a 2nd starter for that game.

I also see WKU had a 7'5" center.

I hope our backcourt plays out of this world. I don't have much faith at moment that our front court is going to carry the day. (i'm usually wrong on my predictions though)

RE: South Carolina - DuelingDragon - 11-15-2021 10:55 AM

Sounds like our chances come down to whether we can turn them over and get easy shots. We are not a good rebounding team yet. We do play pretty good half court defense, especially disrupting the passing lanes, but we're vulnerable on the boards. If I was coaching against us, I'd go hard at trying to get Jemison in foul trouble early. Having him sit 10 minutes of the 1st half could be big.

What was the KenPom prediction for the WKU-SC game?

South Carolina was favored, but I believe they were only favored by one point or so.

Yep. South Carolina had 24 turnovers against WKU. WKU stole the ball 17 times.

Game we should win, but we haven’t been able to get over the hump in games like this in forever. Alarming where our front court is after 4 games.

Yeah they haven't been very impressive so far collectively. No way our rebounding numbers should be that bad with our size and athleticism. I think a lot of it comes down to Jemison's issues foul problems. He just hasn't shown he can consistently stay out of foul trouble yet. KJ seems to still be struggling on finishing around the rim, and scoring in general. LeBlanc is super athletic, but raw as sashimi on the offensive end. AD isn't ready for any real minutes. Rongie - who knows - I thought he'd be ready for spot minutes at least.

RE: South Carolina - The Answer UAB - 11-15-2021 01:38 PM

I agree with earlier sentiments. Seems like our strengths align with their weaknesses. We have to turn them over and turn this into a face paced game. Our half court offense has been spotty at best. 3Pt shooting hasn't been great yet. FT shooting is still poor, like last year.

Crazy how similar this team is to the fastest 40 teams. This roster may have more top to bottom talent than we did on those teams, but this team doesn't quite play with the defensive ferocity those teams did, but still similar. And yes, I understand the fastest 40 isn't AK's coaching style and we aren't trying to replicate that. We have a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses and similar playing styles to those teams.. I will be very interested to see how we stack up against a similarly matched opponent - we've simply overwhelmed the opposition so far.

RE: South Carolina - UABrandon - 11-15-2021 03:04 PM

The one thing that I have noticed from past squads was the team would see the front of the jersey of our opponent and get a bit intimidated when we were the better team overall. Thankfully the transfers have played against big time competition at their past schools so I wouldn't be too worried about this one

For sure. The last group of UAB teams that didn't routinely play scared against "big name teams" were the fastest 40 squads. Hopefully we are back to that confidence level. Even if we lose, I don't want to see us play scared.

Are we really already complaining about the deficiencies of a basketball team that hasn’t played a close game yet? Can we at least wait until football season before starting to be negative?

It’s mandatory to complain especially if you win

RE: South Carolina - The Answer UAB - 11-15-2021 04:10 PM

Not sure where you got that - just discussing the team.

Our full court defense and ability to generate turnovers has been excellent. We can score in spurts as fast as any team I've seen in a long time. We appear to have a game changer in Jelly, with seriously good complimentary players up and down the roster.

I think that we have looked really good so far. Rebounding, half court offense, and post play have been our weak points. If you say that's complaining, oh well. No team is perfect.

No one is complaining. Stop being a drama queen. Some folks just enjoy objectively discussing our sports teams.

RE: South Carolina - DuelingDragon - 11-15-2021 04:18 PM

I heard Coach AK mention those specific areas of improvement in his postgame interviews.
