WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 08:31 PM

Both teams are struggling offensively and racking up turnovers. Jackson already with 4 TOs. She is simply not the answer at point guard.

Rice up 17-16 at 7:18 of 2Q. We're shooting only 31%, but are controlling the boards.

Crosthwait started, but she's only 2-8 from floor. Very unusual for her. Austin leads the way with 8 points and 5 boards. Fisher doing her thing on defense-- already with 3 boards and 3 blocks.

But the reality is that Jackson is basically all we have at PG this year. So having her play 30 minutes a game, even if it means she averages 10 TOs a game, is the best thing that can happen. Nothing before conference play matters for this team, so everything from now until then needs to be seen as preparation.

Also no Swayze, which is disappointing.

Don't know what Ulla is like, but rice women are not as bad as I was thinking they might be

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 08:52 PM

Haylie's ankle is taking forever to heal. 3 weeks ago at the Assist Club even she sought she was only a week or two away.

Rice up 33-22 at half. Shooting 41% with balanced scoring-- Crosthwait with 9 and Austin with 8 lead the way. The difference in the game is our 26-10 domination on the boards, including 10 offensive rebounds. That more than offset our whopping 15 turnovers (vs. 10 for ULaLa). We're also 8-10 from the charity stripe.

Gooden can't stay on the floor as she picked up 3 personals in just 7 minutes of action.

We need Fisher to look for her shot more. She was 4-4 in Game 1 and is 2-3 tonight to go along with 5 boards, 3 assists and 2 blocks. She really needs to bulk up just a bit, but she is going to be a really good one for us. Strong 2-way player.

Rice is playing hard. Just worried not enough bodies if injuries pile up.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:14 PM

Jackson is a turnover machine-- 8 already. She's only taken 1 shot (made a layup), has 2 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals...and 3 personals.

ULaLa on 6-0 run to close it to 42-34 half way through 3Q.

Austin leading way with 12 points (3-5 FG, 6-6 FT).

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - Fort Bend Owl - 11-13-2021 09:16 PM

Louisiana was the Sun Belt regular season champs last year I believe? They may not have returned everybody, but this would still be a quality win if we can hang on.

Edmonds has struck me as a calm force on the sideline who knows what she is doing. Yes, we have to stay healthy (Swayze will be back soon enough) and no, we don't have the talent of the last couple of years. But we have a few quality players who play hard, so we'll be in a lot of our tougher contests. And I think we'll be challenging for the postseason again as soon as 2022-23.

Jackson is being forced to be the main point guard when I'm not sure that's her ideal position. I wouldn't get too down on her because Rice will need her to play a ton of minutes.

You should be thrilled that Bellamy is 2 of 2 in free throws!

Doucet and Williams are preseason all-Sun Belt first team (doucet POY). Louisiana was picked second by coaches. Troy received 11/12 first place votes.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - elw4796 - 11-13-2021 09:28 PM

53-41 after 3. The turnovers are obviously a concern, but we all knew that we'd turn it over a ton this year because of the roster. The fact that we're up 12 against a good mid-major team despite 22 TOs is pretty darn decent. Just need to finish them off.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:29 PM

Rice 53-41 after 3Q.

Crosthwait got hot half way through the quarter and now leads the scoring with 16.
(She's played all but 2 minutes of the game so far.)
Bellamy with 8 points (yes, 2-2 FT!), 7 boards and 1 block in 11 minutes.

Our 33 -15 edge in rebounding is offset by our 23 turnovers (vs. 13 for ULaLa).

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:31 PM

And ULaLa goes on a 5-0 run to start the 4Q to cut the lead to 7.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - elw4796 - 11-13-2021 09:35 PM

Big moment for this team. Louisiana playing better, have cut it to 6 multiple times now. Let's see what the young guns are made of.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:35 PM

Make that a 9-0 run by ULaLa....finally halted with Gooden's first bucket of the game on a layup. Rice up by 8.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:39 PM

60-53 at 5:11 mark. Fisher just picked up her 4th personal.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - elw4796 - 11-13-2021 09:41 PM

62-55 at the U5. Probably appropriate to be nervous. Nursing a small lead in the final minutes when your team turns it over a lot is always a bit stressful.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:43 PM

62-59 at 4:04. ULaLa shooting over 55% this half.

ULaLa shooting well over 50% this half and have committed just 3 TOs.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - waltgreenberg - 11-13-2021 09:45 PM

No defense whatsoever this quarter. Austin 9-9 FTs (17 points) and Crosthwait's 19 points keeping us up...barely.

RE: WBB vs. ULaLa - elw4796 - 11-13-2021 09:46 PM

66-63 Rice with 2:39 left. Louisiana the much better team this half.
