UNC Asheville (271) at UAB (71)

KenPom has UAB winning 82-63.

UNC Asheville is projected to finish 8-8 in the Big South Conference this season, and 15-15 overall.

In addition to UAB, they also play OOC games against UNC (40), Indiana (31), and common opponent East Tennessee State (142).

Winthrop is picked to win the Big South, with UNC Asheville tied for 6th.

Basketball has arrived at the right time. Need a distraction from football fatigue.

Top three players to watch:

#2 LJ Thorpe Sr. 6’5” 215 - scored in the double digits 13 times last season. Can make threes (40%), but doesn’t shoot that many of them. Good free throw shooter, rebounder, and assists man. Probably their best all-around player.

https://uncabulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/lj-thorpe/3185

#3 Tajion Jones Sr. 6’5” 190 - best shooter on the team. Scored in the double digits 16 times last season, including 6 games of 20 or more points. Big-time three point shooter. Went 68-160 (42.5%) from downtown last season.

https://uncabulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/tajion-jones/3178

#0 Trent Stephney Jr. 6’2” 170 - probably the best distributor of the ball. Gets lots of assists. Can score, but not the best 3-point shooter on the team (at least not last season).

https://uncabulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/trent-stephney/3184

Sleeper:

#22 Coty Jude Sr. 6’9” 190 - had second most 3-point attempts on team last season (35-94 for 37%).

RE: UNC Asheville - Blazer4Life14 - 11-06-2021 10:15 PM

They used to have a pretty decent program just a few years ago. Glad to have teams like them, even if they’re down right now, instead of SWAC teams. Definitely wish I was in BHam so I could go.

RE: UNC Asheville - NC88 - 11-07-2021 05:36 AM

Hey y'all, UNCA Fan here. Looking forward to the game Tuesday. The last couple of years, Asheville has been rebuilding after 10 years of quality mid major play (3 NCAA Tournaments since 2011). I'm not sure where the poster got that we were voted 6th, we should be between 2nd to 4th place this season in the Big South. The conference did preseason predictions by division this season.

North Division (first-place votes) Points
1 - Campbell (20) 148
2 - Longwood 96
3 - North Carolina A&T (3) 92
4 - Radford (3) 83
5 - Hampton 70
6 - High Point 57
South Division (first-place votes) Points
1 - Winthrop (23) 152
2 - UNC Asheville (3) 131
3 - Gardner-Webb 103
4 - Presbyterian College 72
5 - Charleston Southern 47
6 - USC Upstate 41

This years team should be a lot better, with a lot of talent. We've also got good size as well. My prediction would be 11-5 in conference. I still think Winthrop takes conference. This is the first time I've ever seen Longwood projected high. The top conference programs the last decade would be Winthrop, UNC Asheville, Hampton, Gardner-Webb and NC A&T.

With regards to our matchup Tuesday, I have heard y'all have a lot of talent, but I know nothing about your players. I do suspect this will be a pretty good matchup. If Asheville gets hot from behind the arc, watch-out. That will be a problem. Tajion Jones is top-10 in the country in 3pt shooting and if Jude gets hot with him, it's hard to match-up. We've got size with NC Central transfer Evan Clayborne, Tennessee transfer Pember and BJ Marable. Again, without out knowing much about your team, not too sure what to expect.

My projection info is from KenPom. He has you guys tied for 6th in the conference, but actually rated the 8th best. However, in his rankings there is little difference between the 4th place team and the 9th place team.

Thank you for sharing the conference preseason predictions. In a recent interview our coach had actually mentioned the higher projections you shared. I plan to look at your transfers today.

Kev posts a lot of analysis of these types...they're almost entirely based on kenpom...nothing very subjective

thanks for the insight into your guys...cant wait for hoops

RE: UNC Asheville - KevMo4UAB - 11-07-2021 12:33 PM

The Bulldogs only played 20 games last season, going 10-10. They went 1-4 in OOC games, including a loss at Marshall (88-67).

They were a respectable 9-5 in the Big South, including a huge win at Winthrop to close out the regular season. Winthrop only had 2 losses last season - to UNC Asheville and to Villanova in the first round of the Big Dance.

The Bulldogs proceeded to lose their first game of the conference tourney, ending their season.

They return 10 players, with 5 newbies.

RE: UNC Asheville - KevMo4UAB - 11-07-2021 12:41 PM

KenPom starts out with C-USA as the 12th best conference and the Big South as 27th. There are 32 conferences.

The AAC begins at 8th.

RE: UNC Asheville - notnow - 11-08-2021 06:12 AM

UNC Asheville seems to be better than 271 and beat Winthrop on the road at end of COVID impacted 20/21 season. If their shooters catch fire and we shoot like we did in exhibition game, we will be down big. I agree that the big transfer from TN could move the UNCA expectations much higher.

RE: UNC Asheville - UABOG85 - 11-08-2021 09:52 AM

#3 Tajion Jones Sr. will be tough. He is also the active leader in points and 3 pts in the Big South conference which is saying something considering they have 3 pt happy Winthrop in the conference.
#22 Coty Jude Sr. 6’9” should stretch either Buffin or Jemison out and make them guard against the 3 ball.

RE: UNC Asheville - The Answer UAB - 11-08-2021 09:57 AM

Seems like they are a very solid opponent and will be a good gauge to see where we are to begin the year. We can't overlook this team or we'll start the season with an L.

RE: UNC Asheville - KevMo4UAB - 11-08-2021 10:04 AM

UNC Asheville has a Tennessee transfer - Drew Pember Jr. 6’10” 190. Pember played in 10 games for Tennessee last season, scoring a total of 2 points, with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. He got more playing time or opportunities his freshman season playing in 22 games. He had a total of 29 points, 22 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Saw this and was wondering if he would be like our Trey and play a lot for them or would he be a non factor. One would think against us he would get some playing time to try to offset our size.

RE: UNC Asheville - KevMo4UAB - 11-08-2021 10:20 AM

This will be Mike Morrell’s 4th season coaching at UNCA. He is 29-53 overall, after going 4-27 his first season.

Shaka Smart has been his coaching mentor.

We are about to find out how good they really are. I have a feeling with this being Morrell’s 4th season, they will be significantly better. But they have had a difficult time lately.

Here are their KenPom rankings for the last three seasons:

2019 - 347
2020 - 302
2021 - 244

RE: UNC Asheville - Auburn_Blazer - 11-08-2021 12:27 PM

See y'all there!

RE: UNC Asheville - DuelingDragon - 11-08-2021 12:48 PM

I kinda think the exhibition will have taken the lid off the basket and that the Blazers will win going away. Turnovers and transition points galore.

RE: UNC Asheville - KevMo4UAB - 11-08-2021 02:34 PM

ESPN’s BPI has UNCA at 227, and UAB at 54.

The Massey Composite has UNCA at 256, ranging from 204-317. It has UAB at 78, ranging from 47-120.

Thanks for the preview KevMo. Appreciate having a little info about our opponents before I show up, and you did the work for me.
