How many MAC championships have we won in all sports combined in the past decade? And not “division” titles—I mean conference championships.

I’m gonna bet we aren’t in the top 4.

A lot going on behind the scenes and it’s going to get much more interesting I suspect. Interesting timing for this story to drop…

Pinning this to the important threads for the time being.

May you live in interesting times…

interesting. not good at least as it's told in this piece. I was always the glass is 2/3 full 1/3 empty with o'brian but at this point he deserves to retire on his terms. what? all this for a year or two more at his job, for which he is competent? what message is this sending to the other coaches? clearly TK has already been crossed.

Yikes. This sounds like trouble for our beloved University.

Need more time to fully digest the article - but I'm good with TK not getting the extension yet. He still has 3 years left on his current deal. No rush to extend him. After this upcoming season, with 2 2 years left, yea, then give him an extension if it is earned.

clearly TK has already been "crossed."

How ironic!

If a person has been given 20 years in a managerial position, has been paid a large salary and will have a very nice retirement check every month, I find it hard to feel "sorry" for them.

I have always appreciated how well the athletic department does with student athletes academically, but winning is also important. As the article states, getting to the NCAA tournament in basketball and winning MAC football titles has been a rarity.

I also understand that it's difficult to win consistently in the MAC. If you have a good coach they will surely be poached by some school with deeper pockets.

But 20 years is a long time. It's important to bring in a fresh administration from time-to-time to reset things.

I had high hopes for Gaber being a great president, but she was not. Following the disaster that was Jacobs she looked good, but in the end she left abruptly and didn't accomplish much. Right now I like what I see with Postel. He won' be here forever, but I'd like to see him and the new AD shake things up a bit. I don't want Kowalczyk and Cullop fired, but I want clear expectations on what it will take for a contract extension. Candle is a different story.

Didn't see this in the important thread...

Interesting timing on the article with the CMU loss. Interesting use of the term "jihad". With all we have seen since 9-11 calling this a jihad is, IMO, very inappropriate. It appears to be a bit of a mess but certainly NOT a "jihad". Very poor choice of words.

Wonder how playing this move by the BOT Chair will impact the candidate pool. This timing is not good looking for a replacement with this type of atmosphere.

The bit about TK's contract is interesting as well. So here we go off on this adventure. I guess we'll all have to stay tuned.

Understand that some the selection committee have been picked.

Being a UT fan in 2021 reminds me of how I felt as a Detroit Tigers fan in 2015….while the recent past wasn’t as great as it could have (or should have) been, the near future threatens to be far, far worse.

RE: Maybe Candle and Coach K aren’t so safe. - rocketpaul - 10-17-2021 03:53 PM

I don't read anything in it about Coach K whomever is the next AD should have an early say about his fate. The only thing I would say is I want Coach K to get a chance to Coach Ryan Rollins as long as he is here. If he can't win a Mac tournament with him playing for us he never will. I bet he will. Next time I get to a sportbook I am betting on him to do it.

Agree with you 51 on prominent use of such a loaded word as jihad (which is typically misused most of the time as it is). Universities can be influenced heavily by folks at the top. I'd argue that having more horizontal leadership (where the faculty, deans, student leadership, boosters, alumni leaders, admin) are all engaged and involved in decision making leads to better decisions and minimizes personal crusades and beefs. The reality is influential people, especially those like Baker who've positioned themselves over time for leadership role, like to seize their moment and put their stamp on their era of influence. It takes a somewhat enlightened leader to use their power to create balance and engagement across the institution.

With a new president, a new AD soon, and a newer Board President the only certainty is a couple years of sorting out the power dynamics and determining if things are driven down from a narrow cohort at the top or if a wider range of interests can leverage broader cohesion. IMO, the solution is not for boosters and such to say screw UT and disengage, but to put more pressure on keep the board and admin leadership focused on the best long term interests of the students, school, athletic program and such. We've seen what happens when you clean house and rush in a new direction (Joplin to Cross). Change is always gonna happen but it's how you do it that matters.

Oh boy so the money men in Toledo are most upset about MOB not get extending yet most fans, including posters in here, clearly want him gone along with all three coaches..... this should be interesting.

Part 1 of 3 Disclosure: Mike is my best friend here in town. I am deeply saddened that he was treated in such a shabby manner by an obviously small minded (and probably racist) chairman of the University of Toledo Board of Trustees. Mr. Alfred Baker, who played on the fabled undefeated Rockets teams from 1969-71, apparently based his decision on two things: a lack of championships and Mike wasn't the right race, i.e., not black.

I am not going to say anything about the second reason because it's reprehensible. However, with respect to the first alleged justification, i.e., a lack of championships, I have a few things to say. Like it or not, The University of Toledo is a mid-major school, a member of the Mid American Conference (MAC). As such, the football team doesn't really compete for the BCS national championship. In fact, even in a fantastic season, the Rockets play in a minor bowl game, which they almost always get.

A fair question for Mr. Baker, who hid like a coward from the Blade reporter: exactly what championships that the Rockets have any shot at (which doesn't include the BCS national championship) do you expect the Rockets to win? The MAC?

We all wish that the Rockets had won more MAC championships, but, honestly, in the grand scheme of things, how really important is it to win the MAC championship? Was it worth treating the best Athletics Director in school history like yesterday's news"

RE: Maybe Candle and Coach K aren’t so safe. - indianasniff - 10-18-2021 08:53 AM

MOB is a good man that has done a lot to improve things for student athletes but has also given lengthy extensions to coaches with little to show for them. WBB used to be a leader in conference and has fallen to an also ran. MBB runs the same thin rotation plan year after year to win championships in regular season without the depth to get through a three day tourney and we fall short. Football rewarded a coach with a long expensive extension on one championship and now the team has fallen into mediocrity or worse. Mr. Baker is not the only person frustrated. Many fans are as well.

Why do you bring race into this? I see no indication that race played a part in hiring, but agree we should have had a person of color in upper athletic administration and I don't believe we ever have. If you and Mike are best friends, I'm even more concerned about O'Brien. And BTW Vern Smith was a better AD.

RE: Maybe Candle and Coach K aren’t so safe. - PaulJ - 10-18-2021 10:08 AM

Yep we have major donors more concerned about how MOB was treated (wanted 2 yrs added to contact and then retire) than about performance of teams and coaches- and yes expectation of more MAC championships (MBB and WBB tournament wins not just regular season titles) is fair. Perhaps these donors should compare UT major MAC championships since 2000 with BGSU?????
