Nothing groundbreaking. We can safely assume UAB and Rice have reached out. UAB and the AAC are negotiating. That’s about all that can be reasonably assumed. Anyone got a flight racket on Aresco? Anyone seen any AAC folks on their campus. There should be more leaks by now.

The AAC isn't "expanding". The SEC expanded. Expansion is a pro-active move to add schools from a position of strength.

Like the L8, the AAC is "backfilling".

It can be both.

Yes, anytime you’re adding a member, you’re expanding.

The AAC is down to 8, so they’re expanding to 10 or 12.

RE: Memphis Beat Tweets AAC Expansion updates from Aresco - Michael in Raleigh - 10-13-2021 01:21 PM

It's possible the Sun Belt will be the only FBS league besides the SEC to expand this round without losing anyone.

To be continued.

Correct. However, I see this as more so a "replacing" than an "expanding."

Is there a time frame in your mind where the line is drawn between replacement and expansion?

If they end up with the same number or a smaller number of total teams, they're replacing. If they grow to a larger number they're expanding.

B12 lost two and added 4, that's expansion as 12 > 10. AAC lost 3 (4 if you go back to UCONN - if they add 4 to get back to the original number, it's replacing. If they add 6 to get to a larger number it's expanding.

I think there is a time frame aspect to it. Example: SEC. The SEC formed with 13 schools. Sewanee left in 1940, Georgia Tech in 1964, and Tulane in 1966. The SEC held at 10 until adding Arkansas and South Carolina in 1992. That's 26 years. Were the additions in 1992 replacement or expansion?

My take is if the conference enters active review of candidates after losing schools and adds relatively soon after, that's a replacement. When a conference sits for a while then adds, even if it is just going back to the original number, that's an expansion. For example, suppose the XII (which went from 12 to 10) did not lose Oklahoma and Texas but rather brought BYU and Cincinnati on board this summer to get back to 12. That would be an expansion to me. When the XII added TCU and West Virginia, that was a replacement.

That's all fair.

I'd say if the B12 only grabbed 2 it would have been replacement instead of expansion since it was in direct result of two leaving.

For the AAC, since this is a direct result of teams leaving (and I'd say UCONN is close enough to still be relevant) they would need to go beyond 12 for it to not be replacing.

If they go to 10 now, and then wait 5 years to add 2 more, I'd say the first 2 are replacements and the next two are an expansion.

The MWC might foray into Texas to try and keep a couple members happy. (That strikes me as the wrong reason to do anything)
