B12 lost two and added 4, that's expansion as 12 > 10. AAC lost 3 (4 if you go back to UCONN - if they add 4 to get back to the original number, it's replacing. If they add 6 to get to a larger number it's expanding.

When a conference sits for a while then adds, even if it is just going back to the original number, that's an expansion. For example, suppose the XII (which went from 12 to 10) did not lose Oklahoma and Texas but rather brought BYU and Cincinnati on board this summer to get back to 12. That would be an expansion to me. When the XII added TCU and West Virginia, that was a replacement.

I'd say if the B12 only grabbed 2 it would have been replacement instead of expansion since it was in direct result of two leaving.

For the AAC, since this is a direct result of teams leaving (and I'd say UCONN is close enough to still be relevant) they would need to go beyond 12 for it to not be replacing.

If they go to 10 now, and then wait 5 years to add 2 more, I'd say the first 2 are replacements and the next two are an expansion.
