I would tell them they need to revive baseball by 2023 and football needs to start by 2027 or they are gone.

Yes, basketball was better this year and they beat NMSU. But if they don’t sponsor football, they are no help to the MEAC.

Agree. We need to stick to things where we have at least an outside chance of doing well.

RE: Latest on Chicago State's Pursuit for League Membership - MICHAELSPAPPY - 04-26-2022 10:35 AM

However, the sad fact of the matter is that it is extremely unlikely that any school in CSU's circumstances will ever have any sports team that has a positive bottom line if ALL costs are allocated. So, if having football is absolutely the only way we can be in a conference, then that may be the price we have to pay. But having a football team in the red is going to be a much larger drag on finances than even a basketball team in the red. I don't know if CSU's overall finances could stand that big of a hit.

I think that Chicago State's future hinges on having football. There's a two-way fold to this... Flo-Sports contract which asks for football and the MEAC. I think without football it will survive but not for long. I eventually think all sports may find affiliate status but no real home.

The MEAC vote according to multiple reports including CollegeAD failed

As wacfan86 mentioned— it was football or bust apparently for the full membership offer.

So now what do they do?

RE: Latest on Chicago State's Pursuit for League Membership - mjs - 05-04-2022 12:23 PM

This post by Matt Brown on another board is quite concerning-

I don't know if it's death watch for the MEAC yet, but boy Chicago State is in a TON of trouble. Back in the fall, the school had *three* different leagues interested in them. Their senior leadership managed to alienate all three...either over money, demanding to not have provisional membership, or football. They also had affiliate deals for individual sports essentially agreed upon, only to be blown up at the last second.

Now one of the smallest staffs in all of D1 has to figure out how to build fall schedules (even though most schools have already finished fall scheduling), AND recruit a new AD. It's a complete disaster.

I wonder what they did to "alienate" the OVC. Must have been pretty bad since it seems like the OVC would really like to shore up their numbers. Unless the OVC feels pretty confident that, despite rumors to the contrary, their 10 current members (after July 1st) will be sticking together for awhile.

I don't know if this program survives as an independent, and anytime you have uncertainty, you start bleeding talent, which will be worse than ever in the current transfer environment.

They’ll have to survive and just keep plugging along. Independence in basketball isn’t ideal, but it is far from the impossible task some make it out to be.

You have a lot more games early in the season. When everyone else is in conference play, a few teams will be looking for an opponent in a week they may only have one game. Chicago will be the only independent and can take that game. Look at all the games Carver had. Any coach would rather have a D1 school than a Bible college with 35 students on the schedule. It’s been done before and it will be done again.

But can't be done forever. They'll need to find a conference somewhere, at any level.

The main problem for basketball is getting games in January and February. Especially if you’re barely finding out now that you’re going to be independent. Not sure about other sports, since I don’t follow anything other than football and basketball. The instability of leadership further complicates things for Chicago State.

The revolving door of AD's doesn't help and really points to the schools leadership as being the problem.

The other sports they sponsor are:
Golf
Tennis
Indoor track
Outdoor track
Cross country
Soccer
Volleyball

All are for both men and women except for volleyball.

Volleyball has a conference schedule structure similar to basketball, as does soccer. I don’t know exactly how the seasons are set up so maybe they could find schools in search of OOC matches. Men’s soccer might be the easiest to find an affiliate league for, especially if someone wanted to get to an even number and going to Chicago wasn’t an issue.

Don’t know how hard it would be to find a home for volleyball or women’s soccer. Both seem to be pretty widespread so I don’t know if anyone would have an opening. Again, maybe an odd numbered league is out there.

I think tennis does have a team format for matches though I don’t know how it works or if they have much of an OOC season.

Track, CC, and golf you just go to meets and then have a conference meet at the end of the season. Should be able to find someone to let them in for that.

But it is getting late and without an AD it’s going to be hard to get a schedule going.

The Southland let some non league teams into conference tournament.

They based tourney seedlings off of Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings; could be done for Chicago State and outside of league tournament, got to presume CSU can make a five hour circle around campus and play ample D1 foes on the cheap

I checked the conference website and I didn’t see any outsiders in the tournament this year but NJIT is an affiliate for both tennis teams. They only have four men’s programs. One is UIW, who might stay but right now will be in the WAC next season. Lamar has men’s tennis but won’t be back until 2023. There are eight (including NJIT) SLC women’s tennis members.

They also have two golf affiliates. So the SLC would seem to be open for golf and tennis.

Who were the 3 conferences?

OVC - Money?
MEAC - Football?
??? - provisional membership?

The good thing about the WAC was that no matter where we move, our travel distances are not likely to be any greater than they were there.
