...hmmm... a 'made for TV' deal? They honestly might be on to something... it seems these leagues always have issues with finances (duh), even though they have TV deals which you would think allow them to exist to the point to where they can make it 'moderately successful' in a few seasons... but for the first year, just cut out multiple stadium deals, travel, etc., and perhaps it can take hold 'virtually' in the target cities...
Not that anyone here follows cricket (yeah, I'm sorta weird), but they have 'all-star leagues' every year in different countries (Australia, India, etc.) - last year (and I think this year, too), due to the Pandemic, India moved their entire tourney to Abu Dhabi in one big ol' stadium there for ALL games, instead of at multiple venues throughout India... and it probably still makes pretty good bank 'virtually' (India is cricket mad, just so y'all know... ...btw, UAB should explore a club cricket team, although not sure who we would play... there's a lot of teams in the Caribbean, so, yeah, that's cool, road-trip-wise... 02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana )

ANYway, maybe the first season they will just 'test the waters' to see interest in the 'target markets' (via TV only), then next season do the 'full season' in the representative cities. If anything, guess it shows we will have a team... sure - I'm down with that 04-rock.

as to why: probably zero risk of any issues with COVID restrictions, and the BJCC is probably going to give them a really good deal (ie: why it's not in florida)

RE: Birmingham hosting entire USFL - Plaid Blazer - 10-11-2021 04:38 PM

..... and Shane Falco plays QB for all the teams!

RE: Birmingham hosting entire USFL - DuelingDragon - 10-11-2021 06:31 PM

Could be kinda cool. I hope the USFL does well but I have my doubts it lasts any longer than past attempts

RE: Birmingham hosting entire USFL - GreenFreakUAB - 10-11-2021 06:34 PM

...also noticed they will be shown on FOUR different networks... dang...04-jawdrop

We should divide the teams up by area to decide who to root for. Hoover residents root for a team, Vestavia roots for a team, Trussville roots for a team etc. we can designate the refs for Mountain Brook because everyone loves rooting against the brookies.

If they did it that way, in a couple of seasons the other teams best players will all play for Hoover. They'll find sweet day jobs and discount apartments or houses too. Somehow that area is just a magnet for good football players and their families.

They are proposing playing in a bubble, like the NBA Playoffs, with Bham as the bubble. This would be HUGE for the city in travelling taxes and money. 8 teams all living in hotels, possibly an entire hotel booked solid for season to keep the bubble intact.

This would indeed be pretty cool. I wonder how well attended the games would be and if we'll be doing daily ticket count analysis? (I know the answer to that, just a rhetorical question).

How much would attendance really matter for their model? Sounds like a made for television football league.

If they are wanting a NBA bubble, I am not sure they will allow fans

I would look at it from the stand point of reducing travel cost and limiting dealing with the different covid protocol of different states. I'm certain fans will be allowed if this comes to fruition.

My question is who are the 8 USFL teams?

RE: Birmingham hosting entire USFL - DuelingDragon - 10-12-2021 11:54 AM

I don't think attendance matters for this at all. But I think it could be decent if the price is reasonable.

They haven't announced it, but I read they had purchased all the trademarks for the following:

LA Express
Chicago Blitz
Tampa Bay Bandits
Houston Gamblers
New Jersey Generals
Birmingham Stallions
Jacksonville Bulls
Portland Breakers

probably all rolled into the cost for the stadium, too, since the BJCC is involved here. They have the rooms (Sheraton and Westin) and Protective Stadium, with the city also able to throw in Legion Field if they need it. makes it all a nice packaged deal for the USFL

To put that in perspective: Alfa put me up at the Residence Inn on the south side for about a month. Residence Inn billed them over $100/day. I’m sure the USFL will get a group rate, but my experience was 7 years ago. Course, they’ll probably save a lot of money by not having to arrange flights.

RE: Birmingham hosting entire USFL - DuelingDragon - 10-12-2021 02:51 PM

For the hotels and restaurants at Uptown that basically sat almost empty from March 2020 until late spring of 2021 because of COVID, this would be HUGE! Tremendous opportunity for Birmingham.

RE: Birmingham hosting entire USFL - demiveeman - 10-12-2021 02:54 PM

If they want a bubble, how will that affect regular Birminghamians that want to go to Uptown?
