UT Golf: 2021-22 - northcoastRocket - 09-26-2021 09:08 AM

It's really sad how far and how fast the UT Women's Golf Team has fallen since Coach Hollingsworth left. They have played in 2 tournaments so far, and finished last in each. Trailing behind the 2nd-to-last team by more than 40 strokes in each tourney. Man.

The Rocket men fared somewhat better, finishing 11th of 16 teams in their 1st tourney, and UT SO Jamie Tofte Nielsen finished tied for 21st, and was awarded MAC Golfer of the Week for his performance.

Well, although the Women's Team seems to be a shadow of their former selves, it appears the Men's Team is making a huge resurgence.

Last week the Rockets finished 3rd (of 12) at the Purdue Invitational, with the highlight being they finished ahead of perennial MAC powerhouse Kent State.

Then yesterday & today, they competed in MSU's Quail Valley Invitational, a tourney that included 6 teams ranked 31 or higher according to Golfstat, and the Rockets finished 4th! Didn't quite beat Kent (#31) this time, but finished ahead of South Florida (#10), Northwestern (24) and Indiana (25). Rockets were ranked 112th coming into the match. They should move up quite a bit after this performance. Live stats:

Meanwhile, the Women finished 2nd last week at their own Rocket Classic in Port Clinton. CMU won the tourney. I remember the day when the Rockets would never loose to another MAC team except Kent. They did beat the other MAC teams present at least (EMU, BG, Ohio & Ball St.)

Today and tomorrow they are playing in Missouri at the Ozark National Invitational. According to live stats, the Rockets are in 6th (out of 15) after 1 round.

Well, this is something that you don't see every day, or decade even ... the Rocket Men have beaten Kent State at the Mobile Intercollegiate. According to the golfstat live scoring:

https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=23431

UT came in 5th at -2, while #28 Kent came in 9th at +11. Rockets finished only 4 shots behind #20 Illinois.

Nice start! It always surprised me how Miami, a school so desperately trying to be a country club, is so bad at golf most of the time.

Early in round 2, UT men's golf is currently in 2nd at the MAC championships, 1 shot behind 1st place Ken..., wait, what? ... Eastern Michigan? How strange. Kent is third, twelve shots behind UT.

UT's Bahrend Botha is tied for 1st with EMU's Cougar Collins ... Cougar? UT's Jamie Tofte Nielson is in third.

Play suspended right now due to lightning, unsure when it will start up again. Host is NIU, and play (when it resumes) is streaming:

RE: UT Golf: 2021-22 - northcoastRocket - 04-30-2022 03:46 PM

Rockets in 1st place after 2 rounds, leading Kent by 1 and EMU by 3 shots. They were in front by more than 10 shots at one point, so they must have faded badly at the end.

Bahrend Botha is tied for 1st at even par.

Final round tomorrow.

After leading the majority of the round, the Rockets fail at the end, and Kent wins by 4. Toledo comes in 2nd. Can't seem to get past that Kent team.

What is it, like almost 30 years since they haven't won a MAC 'chip?

Not quite that bad on the men's side. Since 2000, Kent has won all by 5 championships. UT won it twice in the Brad Haven years, I believe, Eastern twice and Miami once. In 2019 there was a shared championship due to weather delays between Kent and Eastern.

On the women's side however, Kent has one every tourney since 2000. UT used to always be 2nd, and came close a time or two, but since coach Hollingsworth retired, the UT program has fallen quite a lot and finished 6th this year.

RE: UT Golf: 2021-22 - northcoastRocket - 05-02-2022 11:26 AM

Speaking of UT golf, I see that former Rocket golfer Pinyada Kuvanun, who had been playing pro golf back in her native Thailand, is playing on the Epson tour in the US this year (that's the minor league tour for the LPGA). She played her 1st tourney last week, finishing T51.

My bad, was referring to women in that statement. Just crazy dominance.
