Another Alliance? - Side.Show.Joe - 09-12-2021 04:31 PM

Since the Big12 was left out of the BIG10/ACC/PAC alliance, should they attempt to form their own alliance with the AAC and MWC?

Once the AAC adds their new members, it might be in the Big12's interest. Scheduling agreements between those conferences could help preserve some of their status in college sports. Of course it would be terrible for the C-USA, MAC, and Sun Belt. We may be seeing the beginning of a 3 tiered FBS (P4, Mid-Alliance, & G3) replacing the former P5 and G5. Debate.

There’s no debate to be had.

Why align with conferences you want viewed as lower than yours? The Big 12 would be throwing the MWC and AAC a bone. If anything maybe try to Work with the SEC if non of the alliance want to work with the Big 12.

The SEC is so powerful I doubt they will work with anyone. I think their end game is to only play a conference only schedule.

It isn't that the Big12 would want to help the MWC or AAC. It is a matter of them needing to schedule other conferences and not being able to sign games with teams in the SEC or Alliance (BIG10, AAC, & PAC).

Agree. Now I could see Cincy and Houston still playing Memphis in hoops and BYU continuing to schedule Boise in football. But the future Big 12 would be perceived as "weak" were it to undertake a scheduling arrangement with G5 leagues.

They don’t need an alliance. They may not be as strong as the PAC 12 at the top, but they are still a very strong league.

Instead the Big 12 should be pushing for a partial membership in the Big Alliance scheduling agreement. Something like this

Big Ten commits to play following number of games each year against each conference.
8 against ACC
8 against PAC
2 against ND
6 against Big 12 (Includes annual Iowa-ISU game)
24 games total

ACC commits to play...
8 against Big Ten
8 against PAC
5 against ND
3 against Big 12
24 games total

PAC commits to play...
8 against Big Ten
8 against ACC
2 against ND
4 against Big 12 (includes annual BYU-Utah game)
22 games total

ND commits to play...
2 against Big Ten
5 against ACC
2 against PAC
1 against Big 12
10 games total

Big 12 commits to play
6 against Big Ten (including annual Iowa-ISU game)
3 against ACC
4 against PAC (includes annual BYU-Utah game)
1 against ND
14 games total

But thats almost exactly whats about to happen. I'd expect the real opportunity for the Big12 is to align with the SEC. That where there's going to be some nice OOC games to be had. The G5 will largely all align together---for all the good it will do them. In the end---the saving grace for the G5 is that 12-team CFP with a legit G5 playoff slot. Thats going to allow G5 schools to offer recruits a legit chance to participate a post season that they might really care about. To me---thats the real game changer for the G5---not any potential alliance.

The SEC won't even play nine conference games, you think they're going to get rid of their November cupcakes?

FWIW, the strong belief is that the SEC is going to move to at least 9 conference games once UT and OU join. There’s even talk of them going to 10 conference games. In any event, I agree with the sentiment in the sense that I don’t think the SEC has any use for an alliance with anyone.
