Back to back sub-.500 conference records gets you an extension. I hope Creighton can right the ship, but the timing of this extension is very odd to me.

Thought in reading that CC has achieved improvements in recruiting and the AD has started to pay coaches better as both are now on par with the average MAC team. It's an improvement and faith the better recruits will be paying dividends and the extension in future recruiting.

This is GREAT news. CC deserves it. He has turned the program around and built respectability.

I wish they had details on it, but I assume this is a 3 yr deal which I think takes him through 2024-2025 season. Good for recruiting to have a coach with a runway.

CC has to now take the next step getting to the top of the MAC and/or winning 7-8 games a season. I would think a 3rd contract warrants that.

RE: New Contract for CC - Bob Wickersham - 09-02-2021 10:55 AM

I like it. We have stability. He has proven that his teams will never be an embarrassment, they play tough physical games with P5 opponents, he really did completely reshape the culture of EMU football, he seems like an honest, loyal, good guy who ACTUALLY WANTS TO BE HERE. If we can compete for a MAC title, that would be icing on the cake.

RE: New Contract for CC - cidbearit - 09-02-2021 11:11 AM

As the parent of a player who has three seasons (including this one) left with the program, I could not be more happy to hear this announcement. CC is one of the key reasons Alex chose EMU over Washington State and the Air Force Academy. As a coach, he delivers so much more to each and every young man who plays for him than just a quality football experience. His players develop life skills that they will carry for the rest of their lives. Anyone associated with EMU should celebrate this action.

Indeed. We needed/need to upgrade everything about the EMU FB program. And a lot of it related to $.

As EMU79 reminds us, Genyk coached with horrible facilities, budgets, etc.

EMU is getting much better at competing with our MAC brothers, both on the field and term of infrastructure, budgets, etc.

I'd like to know what the buy out is if a bigger school comes along and picks him up.

That's great to hear Cid. I think I speak for everyone that we all are happy with you and your son's choice to be here at EMU. I think he'll be a huge part of the the line this year and the next two and glad to hear CC will be here as well.

He is building this program the right way and has guys on this roster that are easy to root for.

RE: New Contract for CC - EagleSam - 09-02-2021 11:43 AM

Don’t get me wrong…I love Creighton and think he’s been a great ambassador for the school. But 2020 was a step down from 2019, which was a step down from 2018. I thought the downward trend would be worrisome for the school, but apparently it wasn’t. Hopefully he straightens things out this season and we reach that 8-win potential that we’ve come so close to over the years.

RE: New Contract for CC - vannzee - 09-02-2021 11:57 AM

I don’t think you can draw much from 2020 with the COVID season.

The had some close loses and with a normal schedule (non-conference) and everything, probably would have been in the mix for six wins and a bowl berth.

Probably a good reason to extend. It resets a new buyout. Presumably much higher.

Bingo. The school and CC both can have their cake and eat too. A buyout insures a,quality candidate $ wise if CC leaves. I am delighted this happened. CC is the reason we started buying season tickets again.

RE: New Contract for CC - EMUGLORYDAYSthe90's - 09-02-2021 12:53 PM

This's wonderful news for Eastern Michigan football going forward! He has brought stability to the program, and the success of his student athletes is mighty impressive! He needs to go out now, and get that big prize though! A MAC championship! Win 8 or 9 games! Typically, in any line of work you're promoted, or given a raise based on performance though! E Michigan just gave him a contract extension after two lack luster seasons! But, I understand why, CC wants to be in Ypsilanti, CC graduates his athletes, CC is a great ambassador, leader for Eastern Michigan, and Ypsilanti! Just win 8-9 games, and compete for the MAC championship this season, and then you've accomplished everything A coach is supposed to do!

Extending the contract of a MAC coach in no way, "locks" him in, just ask WMU about PJ and Buffalo about Oats. MAC money is small in the NCAA world.

I absolutely adore Creighton and in favor of this extension, but like Steve says, it is all about the buyout. EMU's compensation for providing a arena for a talent to succeed that also happens to be their highest paid employee MUST be measurable.

RE: New Contract for CC - Lefty One - 09-05-2021 08:42 PM

Good news and the correct move. The MAC 2020 "season" does not count for much.

Extending a coach and renegotiating is best thought of as an insurance policy or hedge bet.

If the coach succeeds and stays, great. If he leaves, esp. early on, nice payday for the university to use to hire the next coach.

E.g., if a successful coach leaves and there is a 400K buyout clause, the school can take those monies and spread over a 4 year period and increase the salary of the next coach by 100K.

I wonder what the formula is? E.g., 50% of his annual (base) salary for each year remaining on the contract?

Using a simple example, 500k base salary for 3 years, the coach leaves after one year the payout would be 500k x 2 x .50 = 500K. After 2 years it would be say 250K.

That would seem fair to both sides.
