New Mexico has a "PURE" Spanish Heritage Myth On It's Hands - KINGALLISON - 08-21-2021 01:39 AM I had to bring this topic to the smack and off topic board. So many New Mexicans in Northern New Mexico are so ashamed of their Mexican heritage and indigenous ancestry that they deny it and claim only a "PURE" Spanish heritage even though most of the first settlers who arrived in New Mexico from Mexico City in 1598 and 1600 with Juan de Onate were indigenous Mexicans and half indigenous Mexicans from the Valley of Mexico (Aztec Empire aka Mexico City). They deny it yet go home and eat tacos, enchiladas, pozole, tamales, tortillas, chile, beans, and Mexican rice, all Mexican cuisine that has been made and eaten in Mexico for thousands of years, except the rice of course. Southern New Mexico which most people descend from the same first setters who arrived in New Mexico embrace their Mexican heritage and it's indigenous ancestry. In 1850 many Northern New Mexican families moved to Mesilla which in 1850 was a border town on the Mexican side. Many of the families didn't want to be govern by the United States. We even killed the first U.S Governor of New Mexico only a few months after he was appointed the position. Northern New Mexicans remained but over the years developed the "Pure" Spanish heritage myth including the "I'm not Mexican" saying. But sorry to disappoint all you Northern New Mexicans but ya'll not "Pure" Spaniards. Deny your Mexican heritage all you want but you still got that indigenous blood running through you.
