4 million live viewers - georgia_tech_swagger - 08-18-2021 03:29 PM

Where has this magic number appeared from? I haven't heard much about that and in one day I heard it mentioned in the same context on ACCN, SECN, and ESPN.

Why is having 4,000,000 viewers for a CFB game such a big deal? Why is, say, 3,000,000 livew viewers not enough? What if you bring in over 10,000,000 does that mean you get to double your TV contract?

This smells like a talking point from Fuhrer Mickey.

It's not from ESPN, it's from an article written at The Athletic by a University of Florida graduate who was a walk-on football player there.

Advertisers pay based on viewership, and it's an exponential curve not a linear one.

This is why the pac-12 is now hosting some 9am Pacific time games. Their numbers are way better when the eastern half of the country tunes in (it may be half the country in size, but it's 80% of the population). And they need the revenue, so they'll continue to have some early riser games.

If you look at all of the SEC T1 (CBS) games for 2019, they averaged 3.8 million viewers (a few ESPN games did as well). This is also typical of T1 games on ABC. So I'm guessing this is just a rounded-off way of saying "T1-worthy" games.
