E$PN's ultimate end game-become the sole broadcast partner of the NFL - DawgNBama - 08-17-2021 03:21 PM

It took me some time to see this, but I believe E$PN is using college football as an experiment in how to figure out to pull off their ultimate coupe-de-etat: bringing the NFL in 100% in house, no sharing. Rather than be nice to competitor FOX by just offering Texas or Oklahoma SEC membership, leaving the Big Ten to get Oklahoma or Texas, E$PN chose to have the SEC go for both Oklahoma and Texas. And there's several articles out there, some published by E$PN, that have the SEC going after programs in the B1G, ACC, and Pac 12 as well, setting up a semi-pro college league, all controlled by E$PN. But why stop there? Why not go after some of the big enchillada, the NFL?? Because E$PN wants the NFL all to itself!!! E$PN is using college football to see how to evaluate teams so it will know how much to bid on the entire NFL package, IMO. Yes, it would be a lot of $$'s to pull off, but if E$PN could pull it off, it could very easily recoup all of that money.

1) That's more money than Disney wants to give to one league. The new NFL TV contracts pay the NFL much more money each year than ESPN/ABC spends on all of their sports rights combined.

2) More importantly, the NFL flexes so much power because they have co-opted not only ESPN/ABC, but also NBC, CBS, Fox, and now Amazon. The NFL gets maximum dollars from TV and they have all these major broadcasters and their affiliated companies serving as NFL propaganda outlets.

As I mentioned on the other board, if the people making decisions in college football were smart, they would do the same with their next playoff and divide it up among at least two networks.

reading the article on the NFL's most valuable teams below, it would take over $111.8 billion to pull this off. It may be more waaaay more $$'s than Disney wants to give to one league, but imagine how much $$'s E$PN could charge for ads covering regular NFL games, plus NFL playoff games, plus the Super Bowl!!!!!! And E$PN could put all of the NFL on its streaming services or cable channels, so viewers would be forced to pay for an E$PN subscription to watch!!!

I agree with you on college football 100%.

And then have riots as local taxpayers and other fans can't see the games free OTA anymore.

Not gonna happen.

The NFL is way too smart to make a stupid business decision like this.

The NFL can thrive and survive without ESPN.

looking at a very big check like that, I seriously have my doubts that the NFL would do that. I can see Jerry Jones make the point you are making, but he could be very easily outvoted. It has happened in the past.
As far as riots go, that would be a huge concern for law enforcement, but not to NFL or E$PN, unless they were both really affected by the riots (i.e. the riots took place on their property). Then they would do something.

Disney would be broken up for anti-trust if they wound up with 100% of the NFL.

now that I can see but it would depend upon who is in power at the time: the Dems tend to favor big business and monopolies; the Republicans favor small business and breaking up and/or preventing monopolies.

Curious as to what JRsec's thoughts on this are.....
