Dabo, Clemson against 12-team playoff - quo vadis - 07-20-2021 03:04 PM

He makes good points. 12 means playing more games just to give lousier teams a chance. He was against 4 teams too.

Dabo/Clemson against expanding the Playoff? Let me guess, so is Nick Saban and Alabama.

This story gets today's DUH award.

Rings pretty hollow after his #11 Ohio State beat his #2 Clemson.

So a program that wants to send kids to the NFL and their 19 game schedule is worried about a few extra games?

If you were really concerned about the health of your student-athletes, decline the post season completely. Just go back to the 11 game schedule, no bowls.

We need to move the scholarship numbers to 120-125. I hope they totally deregulate recruiting and allow for schools to sign as many as they can/want.

Huh? Ohio State was #2 last year.

Dabo ranked Ohio State 11th last year in the final coaches poll before the CFP Semifinal

Here is Dabo in full context...From The Athletic:

The topic came up when Swinney fielded a question about College Football Playoff expansion, which he is — and has always been — against.

“As far as I’m concerned, whatever the rules are, we’re going to get our team ready to go play and compete, and if it’s 12 teams, hopefully we can compete to be one of them. (Same) if it’s 25. If they break off and have a Premier League, and if you don’t do well enough you get relegated to the other league, I don’t know — isn’t that what they do in soccer?” he said.
“Maybe we should do that. Maybe we should have a 40-team Premier League with a 12-team Playoff, and if you stink you get relegated to the other level or something.”

Swinney’s main stated opposition to an expanded field is that it puts too much emphasis on the Playoff and discredits anything shy of competing for a national title. He said he misses the days of it meaning something when a team finished in the Top 25 and/or won a bowl game.

I have a feeling that Dabo and Clemson’s opinions will have little to no impact on any future post season changes

If there is anyone who knows a thing about teams that don’t belong in the playoff, it’s Dabo.

Swinney also said that he was against the 4-team playoff before it happened. He might want a return to the bowls-and-polls way of the 1970s and 1980s, but I don't think anyone needs to be concerned that it will happen.

Georgia is the only attractive opponent on that schedule. Clemson should win the rest of the games on the schedule.

They actually get paid real money in the NFL. Not just the scraps off the table.

Yes, anyone who gets their paycheck from a college athletics department should prefer the bowls-and-polls method. Half the teams ended the year with a bowl game. So in any given year, at 1/4 of teams in CFB could end the year on a high note and claim a successful year, practically guaranteeing that anyone who wanted to keep their job could stick around.

Nowadays, it seems like all the extra money in the system is being funneled into buyouts of bad head coaching hires. Which, oddly enough, doesn't make the head coaches happy either.

He seems to recognize that his opinion isn't likely to matter much, that a 12-team playoff is coming.

But I also think he's basically correct. We don't need a 12-team playoff for any good reason. Players are going to have to play those extra games because there's apparently a lot more money in it for the schools and conferences.

I see his point. Teams should definitely be able to opt out of the playoff in any given year if they feel like they'll be playing too many games.

In his current postion, a 12 team playoff does nothing for Clemson. They are already a regular in the top 4. They are recruiting successfully nationally along with Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma. Right now a top recruit knows that there are four schools that are regulars in the playoffs, that are consistently on the big stage.

A 12 team playoff is more money for everyone, but it also opens up eight opportunities for other schools to be on the big stage. Some of these schools will will eventually cut into the recruiting successes of the top 4. Dabo has built Clemson into a national recruiting power and he does not need to add more seats at the recruiting table. If schools like Texas, Michigan, Oregon and USC start taking food of of his recruiting table, he won't be the recruting fat cat that he is today.

RE: Dabo, Clemson against 12-team playoff - Wedge - 07-21-2021 04:18 PM

If you want a larger playoff, know that Mike Leach will always be on your side.

Quote:While some coaches and players around college football have come out against an expanded 12-team playoff, Mississippi State coach Mike Leach wants even more participation.

Asked whether 12 teams is enough, Leach said Wednesday, "It's never enough."

"But I'll tell you what," he said, "Mark Keenum, our president, is on that committee, so I know they're in good hands. I think that part is outstanding.

"I think 12 teams is a huge step in the right direction. I personally would like to see 64, and you could map it out pretty easily."
