Nice to see college athletes will now be getting paid - nworocket - 06-24-2021 07:22 PM

I'm sure a lot of people on here won't like college athletes getting paid, but this is long overdue.

OK, but who is really going to get paid? Certainly not many in the MAC. Who's going to pony up the big bucks for some Big Ten kicker or lineman who isn't very articulate. How about a cross country runner who's fifth best on her team? People need to get real.

This could go in so many different ways. The top tier schools such as osu wichigan Bama and some others will have a big advantage over many other schools. The rest of the power 5 will be in much better position than the group of 5 schools. They need to get this worked out before things are out of control. Because there’s going to be large scale payola going on. We all know it’s going to happen. There is talk of athletes getting paid for their likeness and names. Will they get paid for endorsements. How much will a student from OSU get for saying he likes Bingo Bobs restaurant compared a student from Toledo?

That might be same-ol same-ol? THere will be G5s willing to break the bank, bet on it. Or a single very large donator/agent looking to "invest" in an athlete. It probably will depend on limitations set (attempted) by NCAA.

I'm absolutely against Universities getting involved in paying athletes salaries of any type for playing sports, let alone negotiated contracts. I'll gladly watch free on TV but any attendance, any money directed towards University sports... the game will lose its interest for me.

The bigger issue for me has been the right for an athlete to benefit off their own name, regardless how they made that name. It's theirs. Their face. If it's marketble, they should be able to market it as long as the University or team is not mentioned.

Please tell me where the money will come from to pay these athletes? Especially on the G5 level and lower! Actions and desires have consequences!

It will come from the private companies who will use their likenesses for marketing/promotional purposes and deem said athletes as being marketable for their brand. Not really rocket science.

It will go well beyong corporate sponsors. Essentially Universities will be in bidding wars to purchase the services of the best eligible athletes available.

"The substantive decision in this case would allow a university or conference to provide benefits that cannot be capped by the NCAA as long as they are tethered to education... the rules for what can and cannot be offered are likely to be institutional. "If you're a star gymnast and you're 17 years old and choosing between three different schools, those schools theoretically could offer you all sorts of academically related benefits," said Luck. "A year abroad, internships. They could pay for your law school or medical school if you decided to."

Universities have to justify educational needs being met...it won't be Universities writing $100,000 checks like some people seem to think. I'm fine with this, as I was a student athlete who wasn't allowed to take advantage of an international leadership program through my alma mater because it was above the allotted amount the University could offer me in a given year. I also wasn't allowed to collect my salary for my first co-op because I listed that I was a student-athlete on my resume (thankfully that stupid regulation has since been struck down). Truth be told, this won't affect schools like UT/MAC...with the budget situations they're all in, there is no way that they're going to be dumping more money into things, even with the fund budgeting required allowing for some monkeying around with numbers after academic awards are received. I'm perfectly fine with Universities developing more academic opportunities for S-As, since most of the time that's the area that tends to go by the way-side for most due to the time draws of the sports they play. If I was offered a study abroad or a graduate degree at the institution's behest, I would have been through the moon because every other student also has those offers available to them at most schools.

The huge checks that people complain about will be coming from private companies...it isn't the Universities giving money to people. Free market enthusiasts should have nothing wrong with companies being able to choose what S-As they deem valuable enough for their marketing budget or not.

For MAC athletes?

RE: Nice to see college athletes will now be getting paid - Party on the hill - 06-28-2021 08:50 AM

I believe that it will be difficult for UT to recruit the athletes that we compete with from the lower P5 schools (Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, etc) The extra cash that they get from TV rights etc.. will be the tipping point for some kids. I wonder if we would have been able to sign Kareem, Barry Church, and Chester Taylor had this rule been in effect.

Like I said...free market. If there is no demand or notoriety, there won't be any (or much) pay. MAC, outside of probably football (though even that might be a stretch), probably won't change much at all.

Again...schools are not paying players through NIL, and this court ruling only bears any decision on educational costs as outlined above. If there are corporations who find low 3* players from hundreds of miles away valuable enough to market them locally, then so be it...but I doubt many would. This is going to definitely impact the higher end of things, but I don't see it impacting mid to low level recruiting much at all.

To your other point, please see the note above...so yes, they probably still would've signed here...especially the two who were only recruited by MAC schools anyways.

Even with the extra cash from TV contacts, lower P5 schools are still subsidized from the college operating budgets, its not like they have money sitting around to pay student athletics as many run on small fixed budgets with no excess revenues. Big name schools, sports and small number of big name players (CFB, MBB) will benefit, but 99% of the millions of college student athletics will receive little if any.

Yep...it'll end up being a couple hundred dollars for being on their promotional material at most, unless some random local businesses think a player on a team has notoriety that is worth using/paying for (and judging by the attendance vs. size of market for most every non P-5 school in the country, they won't).

An athlete is a student first. Any funds a university disperses towards a non-athlete's education, should be available to an athlete. Those disparities you mentioned should never have happened.

Hopefully this ruling eliminates any pressure on the Universities to not treat student-athletes as any other student. The concerns that it goes beyond that are justified though. More court cases to come, I'm sure.

Well, NIL is the law of the land now, and already there were some unexpected results. For instance, one of the 1st big contracts signed by college players went to 2 WBB players from ... wait for it ... Fresno State. Yep.
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/31738893/ncaa-athletes-cashing-name-image-likeness

Will be very interesting to see what happens. UT already brought in someone to talk to basketball players about this. And I see players tweeting that they are open to discussions.

Now, will any UT players make a boatload of money, very unlikely. But I think there will be some amounts of money flowing in maybe unexpected ways. Social media contracts to rep products on their twitter or instagram or tik-tok accounts may happen - even if the contract is only for free product, and not cash. Local businesses could pay appearance fees for promotional events. Speaking fees are a possibility. There will likely be trading card contracts coming back for college athletes, and it's possible some MAC players could get in on that. I am sure other interesting things will happen.

At this level, the money may not flow to just the best players, but to the players who are most marketable, based on their personalities or how photogenic they are. For example, I could see a player like Quinesha Lockett with her bubbly personality being of interest to certain companies as a marketing spokesperson locally, or even back in Nebraska. I could also see a player like AJ Edu getting offered contracts to rep things back in the Philippines, where he is known. So, international athletes may have an advantage there. I think this is all fine, as long as the players don't start spending so much time trying to negotiate deals that it interferes with their performance - athletic or academic.

It's a bold new world now, so embrace it or be left behind.

In Michigan the athletes will inevitably endorse weed dispensaries.

“Go to Lume! I do -it’s where the best weed and service are available for your relaxation needs. There’s nothing like a good evening of Lume sativa products after the big game. It speeds up my body recovery time by 50%!!!!!Go to Lume now you’ll be glad you did!”
