MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - elw4796 - 06-22-2021 12:07 PM

First confirmed game for the men is at home against Texas State. Date TBD. Per The D1 Docket.

They should be competing for a top-5 spot in the Sun Belt. Roster hasn't been finalized but so far they only have a couple smallish departures. Five returnees who played 25+ minutes including their three top scorers. No big transfers, but they add three plus JuCo transfers.

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - elw4796 - 06-25-2021 09:54 AM

Men will play on the road at New Orleans on November 19 in what is probably one of our first games. 5th in the Southland on KenPom last season and bring back a decent team including three of their top four scorers. Five incoming transfers, none of whom blow you away. Probably a middle of the pack Southland team unless one of their two incoming freshmen is a star or their transfers or sophomores take a massive leap. We beat them last year at home 73-62.

So that's Texas State and New Orleans set. Underwhelming start.

Underwhelming, perhaps, but still much better than last season's OOC slate.

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - Fort Bend Owl - 06-25-2021 05:28 PM

We entered the 2020-21 season with a lot of key players gone (either via graduation or transfer). This year, we'll enter the season perhaps as a top 3 pick in CUSA (perhaps - I'd put us in the top 3 along with UAB and La Tech, but maybe others won't do that). The RPI will be much more meaningful in 2021-22.

I do hope we play Houston as that would be another game that we lost this past season due to Covid. UH was a Final Four team last year, and almost certainly will be preseason top-10 in 2021-22.

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - elw4796 - 07-06-2021 09:04 AM

Not fully sure what to make of this, but The D1 Docket (CUSA compatriot and somebody who I trust) has Rice playing 3 games in Fort Myers from November 22 to November 24. The Ft. Myers tipoff takes place during those dates, but that field has been set for a few weeks (Rice is not in it). I combed through the schedules on The D1 Docket and there appear to be 7 other teams matching Rice's entry: Appalachian State, Evansville, Vermont, Fordham, Delaware, Akron, and Oakland. Assuming this is some kind of tournament (though I trust the source I can't find anything from any of the teams), some info below (again, this is without rosters being fully finalized):

> App State: KP = 212. Should be around the middle of the Sun Belt this year
> Evansville: KP = 204. Probably a bottom half team in a competitive Missouri Valley, but they bring back a good amount of production
> Vermont: KP = 133. Perennially the class of the America East. Should be as good or better than last year
> Fordham: KP = 310. Awful team last year, lost most of the team to the portal. I like Kyle Neptune but this is a disastrous roster
> Delaware: KP = 225. Should be very good next year. Basically return their entire roster and add a couple of guys who should contribute
> Akron: KP = 112. They lose Loren Jackson, perhaps a top 3 mid-major PG. But most everybody else should return and they've got some good transfers
> Oakland: KP = 221. Lost a couple of impact players. Don't think they'll be better than last year but Kampe is a brilliant coach so who knows

Again, assuming this is a real thing, not a killer group of teams but there would be a couple of opportunities.

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - Owl 69/70/75 - 07-06-2021 12:47 PM

Should Jan 6 for men be vs. MTSU? That's what I would infer from paralleling the women's schedule.

Or is Rice going to beat Rice once more?

Excellent sleuthing!

"Blogging the Bracket"(https://www.bloggingthebracket.com/2021/2/17/22287581/2021-22-mens-college-basketball-exempt-multi-team-events-mte-thanksgiving-early-season-tournaments) has these teams in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. (south of Ft. Myers). (It cites The D1 Docket, but only Fordham's participation shows on that link ... and its link to the Fordham schedule has last year's games.)

The GCS website says it's played in Hertz Arena, but shows just an empty bracket: http://gulfcoastshowcase.com/#!/men

The GCS has been played since 2013. Here's a link to the event's Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_Coast_Showcase

Akron & Middle Tennessee played in it last year. UTSA, Tulane & Lousiana were in the 2018 event. FAU was in the 2017 field; WKU played in 2015. UH beat Vermont by 1 point to win the 2016 GCS title, and LaTech won the inaugural event's crown (2013) by 4 points over St. Boneventure.

Hertz Arena is a 7,181-seat multi-purpose arena that opened in 1998 as the Everblades Arena, after the ECHL (formerly Each Coast Hockey League) mid-level minor league hockey team that plays there. Hertz bought the naming rights in September 2018.

No games against Southern Miss? That's weird.

I'm sure there are. Rice and Southern Miss both don't have their schedules out.

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - Fort Bend Owl - 07-06-2021 04:39 PM

It looks like we're going back to the traditional travel weekends, so USM would be the travel partner when we play Louisiana Tech. I don't know if those La Tech games listed are Thursday or Saturday games, but you should expect the other game that weekend to be USM (home or away). We'll also play UAB twice (but those will probably be squeezed together on a weekend with an East team?). From what I read on the conference site, we'll have 12 games against our division, and then 6 games against the other division (so we won't play 1 team in the East).

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - elw4796 - 07-13-2021 03:38 PM

Looks like we will be playing on the road against Houston, though there's no date listed. Don't think they'll be as good as last year, but they'll expose our offense if it hasn't evolved since last year. Plus they might grab 30 offensive rebounds.

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - elw4796 - 07-30-2021 12:02 PM

As has been discussed in other threads, the away Texas game is now official. Chris Beard might be the best college basketball coach in America and he brings in a truly ridiculous class of transfers.

> Devin Askew (Kentucky): Former 5-star who struggled last year, but still played 29 minutes a game
> Christian Bishop (Creighton): Dream Beard big who's bouncy and energetic. Doesn't play big minutes (23 per game) but makes the most of them (11 points, 6.5 rebounds, 68% FG)
> Dylan Disu (Vanderbilt): The one-time Rice target who was one of Vandy's only bright spots. Perfect modern big who scores (15 ppg), rebounds (9 rpg), and shoots (37% 3PT)
> Timmy Allen (Utah): Versatile guy who doesn't shoot it well from deep but still manages to score in bunches (17.2 ppg, 47% FG, 27% 3PT)
> Marcus Carr (Minnesota): One of the best individual players in CBB though there are Qs over whether he makes the team better. Scores and passes from the 1 (19.4 ppg, 4.9 apg)
> Tre Mitchell (UMass): Probably the most underrated of the transfers, like Disu a perfect modern big. 6-9 and long (1.5 bpg), plays inside and outside (18.8 ppg, 52% FG, 37% 3PT)

They also bring back Andrew Jones (14.6 ppg), Courtney Ramey (12.2 ppg and 3.9 apg), and Jase Febres (39% 3PT). It's a team with 11 guys, all of whom could probably be starting for a power conference program. Cohesiveness is always a big question mark when you have transfer laden teams, but Beard is by all accounts a guy kids love playing for. If there's anybody who could bring in an entirely new team and have them gelling by season's start, it's probably him.

This will be a much more difficult game than Houston. Keeping it relatively close would be a massive positive.

Southern home game bought

RE: MBB and WBB Schedules Running Thread - GoodOwl - 07-31-2021 01:56 PM

Ye, I agree--I'd prefer our basketball teams be running more than just standing around and jacking up a one-off shot when the clock winds down. More baskets in transition would help both men's and women's teams. Good thread title.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Cannot think of a less necessary game. There's no upside - even an average team is supposed to beat a SWAC team that is consistently a bottom 50 team per KenPom. Plenty of downside if we come out flat. A game you can't win, can only lose.

Getting home games is good - have to build a fan base and can't always be on the road. But you gotta be able to convince a better team to come to Houston. Nothing against Southern, which has the best marching band in America, but for what we expect this team to be this year, this is a waste of a game.

So let’s say we’re deeper this year than the last couple seasons.

Having a “gimme” on the schedule lets you (best case scenario) go a lot deeper on the bench to spread some minutes around and get a look at everyone in a game situation (not just the top 8 or 9)

Sure, but if the last 3-4 years are any indication, we're already going to have 1-3 games against non-D1 teams. If we don't, I'll be more okay with the game.

Are we paying Southern $35,000 for a home game? Are these costs a recent development, or is men’s basketball going toward the football scheduling costs?

It is a guarantee, not a payment. So if their share of the gate is less than $35k, we make up the difference.

Of the 6 guarantees listed, we are the lowest.
