On this date in 1777 the Second Continental Congress adopted the resolution which first defined (albeit loosely) the flag of the United States:
Quote:Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.
I've always loved this text, especially the last participial phrase.
As some of you know, I think flags in general are cool; and as probably all of you know or suspect, I am one of the most unabashedly patriotic people you could meet. Not surprisingly, Flag Day has been one of my favorite days since childhood.
I first posted the Continental Congress resolution on Facebook in 2014, and I've done it every Flag Day since. It occurred to me that folks here might appreciate it as well.

Watching Biden at the G7, they played the anthem and showed the flag.
I wondered what the reactions would be if they knelt to protest that the USA is an oppressive country.

Mine was the only house on the block with the flag out yesterday. Unless you count pride flags, in which case there were several.
There is an amusing oneupmanship battle on my block. House A flies the standard pride flag. House B used to, then got the one with black and brown stripes added. House C then switched to the one with black, brown, pink, light blue, and white. It also amuses me that these oh-so-earnest -- and, of course, white and (relatively) affluent -- virtue signalers cannot see how condescending it is to toss black and brown stripes onto their pride flags as literal afterthoughts.
There is another house on the block with multiple "lives matter" signs: Black Lives Matter, Black Women Lives Matter, Black Trans Lives Matter, and AAPI Lives Matter. I guess Latinx (and Indigenous) lives do not.
