Teal? - 70shawk - 06-07-2021 08:02 AM

While we are discussing branding/improved fan experience, here's a question: what exactly is UNCW's principal school color?

I realize it's "teal", but when you go to an event you see legions of people decked out in all kinds of colors ranging from very bluish to very greenish - and all think they are sporting "teal".

For instance, at UNC Chapel Hill when fans are sporting "Carolina Blue" they are all wearing the same color (for the record Carolina Blue is officially a shade of blue called Pantone 542). UNCCh actually has official branding and visual identity guidelines (imagine that!):

https://identity.unc.edu/

So what exactly is the official shade of UNCW teal?

I can tell you for certain it's not the plainly green shirt i have! I agree with you though, and i don't think our sports team s utilize the teal unis enough

Once again this points to a complete lack of marketing or concern about marketing at UNCW. My real estate company has very specific colors we used for our logo. There shouldn't be a single use of our colors that isn't approved and isn't the EXACT color we chose and approve of. I have never seen an organization, much less a university, so uninterested and inept at marketing. We are DI school with 17,000+ students and our marketing is inferior to most high schools.

It's truly an embarassment. We fail at every level, and on the simplest and easiest things that can be done.

Yep, agree, my company sponsors our softball team and there are very specific colors and logo placement etc.. required.

If you think UNCW should be more consistent with it's use of a specific hue of teal, I don't think Carolina is a great example. Maybe it doesn't mater because their brand is established, but I'll bet money you can't go to Carolina event and point out Pantone 542.

But they are more consistent with color. And if it's off, it's usually close

Uncw sends out e mail to seahawk club members for a company that does sell select merchandise but nothing in teal. I was told to get teal they would need large order.

A start would be to kick Barnes and Noble out of the bookstore and not renew any contract with them. Their selection of merchandise at ballgames suck. And that's if they even show up. The fan shop was never opened during the CAA baseball tournament. Embarrassing.

They're more consistent in that they're "Carolina Blue', but the shades of blue vary as much as teal does here. Just go to Kenan & even the Dean Dome and you will see various shades within the same stadium.

Carolina decided on Pantone 542 in 2016 after consulting with Nike and their brand managers. If Peterson had any interest in being successful at UNCW, it would've been good to leverage his relationship to Jordan/Nike then.

In terms of uniforms, I like the navy with teal and yellow that Keatts introduced. I didn't care for the Wainright era gold jerseys. I'm cool with flexibility in our uniform colors, but establishing our brand it shouldn't be difficult.

Our name is UNCW and our colors are teal, blue and gold..."the color teal was chosen to represent the Atlantic Ocean, the dark blue represents the deep ocean, and the gold symbolizes the sand." Feel the Teal was the slogan back in the day, so we've had a push to establish that in the past it seems.

Well there you have it! Case closed!

Except all kinds of people in positions of authority inside the university refer to it as something other than "UNCW" all the time...and not just in the dim distant past.

And people can and do show up in - the university can and does sell - all kinds of different colors and swear that they are all "teal".

Heck you could have a "Teal Out" night in Trask and have 5000 people all show up in their favorite teal outfits and the other teams wouldn't know to be intimidated because it would be obvious to them that the crowd was, in fact , NOT all wearing the same color!

Bush league branding.

I didn't suggest it was a closed matter. Rather, I was stating what should be the direction we go, and we should push for buy-in. If you want to start with the tint of teal that is worn at games by the fans that show up, have fun. It may be the list of problems, but it's way down the list.

RE: Teal? - 82hawk - 06-07-2021 02:04 PM

CONSISTENCY is the key to branding in every aspect. Colors, name, message, mascot, "vibe", athletic gear, etc. It ALL matters and is ALL a part of creating a "brand". It's the reason every major company spends a fortune to create a brand. Because the companies who have it succeed, while the companies who don't, fail. Our athletic department is poorly funded BECAUSE our branding is ridiculously bad. We rely on donors for funding because our branding is SO bad, even our own students and grads have little interest in UNCW athletics. There is ZERO excitement surrounding our entire athletic program. Unless that changes, we will wallow in a mediocre conference, with mediocre results and mediocre funding. Marketing and branding is more important than the actual teams, and we have none.

My wife is the UNCW grad not me, it's impossible to even get her to go to a baseball or basketball game, and she attended them while in school.

My frustration isn't with you. Its with the school.

Here is a pretty typical example. It's the promo commercial that plays during basketball games:

It's basically , "Yeah, yeah...we're 'UNCW'. See, we've branded ourselves!" Then the narrator immediately proceeds to refer to the school as "UNC Wilmington". Look at other stuff put out by the university and you see that this happens all the time.

The school itself doesn't have to self-discipline to refer to itself only as UNCW (bet UCLA or UNLV or IUPUI doesn't have that problem). Then they scratch their heads and can't figure out why other people call us by other than our stated preferred name.

Maddening stuff.

Technically, our Teal is PMS 329. (Navy is PMS 281, Gold is PMS 108).

It's a beautiful, unique color palette and as one of the few Division I programs that uses Teal, we should absolutely emphasize it. Bring back the 'Feel the Teal' shirts!

Here's the athletic style guide, too: https://uncw.edu/licensing/documents/uncw-learfield-style-guide-04.2017.pdf

Okay, then how about UNCW coming up with some other catching teal-centered alliteration and trademarking that - and then using it?

What 82Hawk laid out about branding isn't some code that has to be cracked. Maybe we should chip in an buy somebody a book?
