Anyone know what is up with Alec Pfreim? Hasn't played in the last four games I am assuming he is injured?

Unfortunately Phreim's injury is season ending. Tough loss today as JSU had it all the way. FYI: Betz, Penn and Claycomb didnt practice all week due to illness.

He has a torn labrum

RE: 2021-22 Season - BGrad1971 - 02-21-2022 10:22 AM

Really tough loss last night. The pessimistic side of me says they so outclassed us that we had no chance. The optimistic side of me tries to list all of the things that led to the possibility of an "off night " including injuries, sicknesses, 3 road games in a week and worn-out players, etc. The thing that bothers me most is that the pass-first offensive strategy is getting almost no easy buckets for many games of this season. That failure and the fact that we get no transition buckets results in the need for more three point shots and we are a 33% 3 point team - JSU on the other hand is a 45% team beyond the arc. Makes it hard to beat a team like that.

RE: 2021-22 Season - KnightsTape - 02-21-2022 01:27 PM

Really tough game to watch last night. As others said, hopefully the travel, sickness, and injuries had more to do with that than the team.

That said, starting to get VERY nervous for next years roster. Fleming & Claycomb are both gone. Penn & Betz potentially gone if they don't take advantage of the COVID year (and if BU has enough scholarships to dole out). Losing all four would mean losing 65% of our scoring along with our two players who can consistently create their own shot.

Really not sure where the team goes after this year. Will desperately need impact transfers and for Ben Johnson to be as good as advertised to avoid a bottom ASUN finish.

Here's to hoping I'm overly pessimistic after last nights game.

RE: 2021-22 Season - BGrad1971 - 02-21-2022 05:37 PM

BU usually gets a decent transfer every year that can step in quickly and help. Not so this year and maybe not so next year. The 4 year ban on NCAA tournament (2 more years after this year) makes it much more difficult to get a transfer if they've already played a year or two at another school.

RE: 2021-22 Season - Big Smooth - 02-21-2022 06:38 PM

Losing Pfriem has really hurt, he developed into a major 3 threat and made defenses cover the floor. Harper just sagged the paint and cut off Dylan last night and gave CJ his. Given the illness/injury this team has way overachieved. Nice to see Thelen back.
The WDRB profile says Dylan graduates in May and picks up a 2nd degree in the summer and will evaluate Europe or coming back. Betz is in his 5th year, his stated goal was to redshirt and get MBA which, I assume, he will have. His NIL won't pay what he can earn next year. Plus Scotty has to give his redshirts some PT next year.
2022-3 Penn, Johnson, Hopf, Pfriem, Thelen. Tipton, Bash, Devault, redshirt off bench. Without Dylan either Tipton or a freshman. Not all that bad................. But we need a banger underneath

Not all that good either, especially if you erase Penn from that list.

Let me start with this comment....I really like the BU guys and they seem to be super young men and give their ultimate effort to succeed and help teammates. But the realist in me says Pfriem, Bash and Tipton cannot create their own offense. Alex Pfriem is as good 3 pt shooter but he has to have time to shoot it, most of his successful shots are flat footed wide open situations. Thelen has had ample opportunities to impress for 3 years, but even when he started last year he spent most of the game on the bench. DeVault has had some good moments but a lot of not so good moments. We're hoping Johnson will be really good but he has yet to play a game. Sorry about this negative dose of reality. I really want the guys to succeed. I've been a fan men's basketball at BU for 50 years (my tag line says I graduated in 1971). I guess I'm just impatient and the move to DI is going to necessitate an elevation of our recruiting and with the NCAA 4 year ban, its probably going to take several years for that to pick up.

Ditto, even the 50 years part.

You guys are "old fogies" -- I've "only" been a Knights fan for 35 or so years. 03-wink

I agree with '71 that the four-guards-and-Hopf thing is not going to work long-term.

As far as elevating recruiting, snagging Hopf and Johnson was big; but, yeah, we need size and athleticism, and I think it will become even more critical as opponents become accustomed to the BU offense. One has to think that Scotty will bring in some of that via at least one transfer.

RE: 2021-22 Season - KnightsTape - 02-23-2022 09:41 PM

Good win to get back on track having to battle Lipscomb and the officials tonight. The foul disparity was ASTONISHING (final numbers skewed because of forced fouls at the end of the second half & the two intentionals at the end of the first). Before the final minute BU was outshot from the free throw line 26-2.

That rant aside, the big news tonight came from the postgame show - Penn confirmed that he is not planning to return for another year. Betz said he is still working through the decision.

Looking forward to watching and celebrating this team the rest of the way this season, they deserve it for what they've accomplished and persevered through. They certainly make me proud to be a Knights fan (and 2018 graduate)

RE: 2021-22 Season - BGrad1971 - 02-24-2022 06:57 AM

Any win is a good win at this point. Agree with the comment that some of the foul calls were hard to understand. One bright spot is Tipton had really good game in my opinion. He may have to step up and be a major contributor next year, with or without Betz.

Yes Tipton played very well. Justin Betz played one of his best offensive games. Both of them looked confident and eager to shoot.

Ugh! not the best game by the Knights today. After watching on ESPN+ went to streaming radio to hear Davenport's comments post game. No coverage on 93.9 FM tried other stations, couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone know if BU games will be carried on the radio in the future?

RE: 2021-22 Season - Big Smooth - 02-27-2022 11:16 AM

For some reason game was on 680, happened on it for 2nd half. Scotty was lamenting the schedule, no practice Thursday, short one on Friday. My take is we are worn out. Bugg commented on radio when Ethan had 2 free throws in 2nd half and missed both that "he could barely get them to the rim". 17 wins (even with the 3 "exhibitions") is amazing. We need bigs but all I see committed are guards.

Saw in the paper or on the internet that U of L signed on with 93.9 to start broadcasting their games. The last 2 games were no longer on 93.9 I think or at least my wife and I could not catch the post game show on the drive back from Freedom Hall which has been our routine all year.

RE: 2021-22 Season - Big Smooth - 02-28-2022 08:19 PM

We should not be on a UL network next year
Knights should move to WHAS, even if it is 2nd fiddle to UK.
ESPN/970 is all-in on UL.
Scotty would be opposed

Agreed. Always thought it was goofy to be on that 93.9 U of L-focused radio station, even if it is an ESPN affiliate (I do wonder if that radio setup is required by the deal to get the games televised on ESPN+).
