2021-22 Season - BellarmineGrad - 06-05-2021 11:29 PM

Looks like BU will play at West Virginia on November 30th:

On an unrelated note, I saw where the great Jake Thelen recently moved from UGA to UC, in the area of his old stomping grounds:

Conference schedule released for the upcoming season. Looks like the new conference members Central Arkansas, Eastern Ky and Jacksonville State will play in the West Division with Bellarmine.

Noticed that BU has posted an opening for a director of men's basketball operations.

All current assistants are still listed on the roster on the official website, so I'm guessing this is a new position; not surprising as I believe many, if not all, D-I programs have an ops director.

I nominate Moves for the position, but he has to go by his screen name!

Seconded.

Newspaper piece on the new guys, as they get rolling with workouts and camps:

The 21-22 roster is up on the BU site. It does not include CJ or Ethan. They are mentioned in the above article. Don't know if they have to go through some eligibility review or what. I thought they were automatically eligible. Anybody have any insight?

No clue. Since the formatting looks a little wonky (I checked on a couple of browsers, and the managers are stuck in the middle of the player listing, while the freshmen don't yet have pics), perhaps they're still working on the page. Note that, in the 7/22 Courier-Journal piece linked above, Scotty does name-drop both Fleming and Claycomb.

One of many good things about being D-I is that we should be able to get an answer -- even if one of us has to "ping" the local media -- without having to wait until, say, practice starting in October (as would sometimes happen with roster questions while D-II).

Rumor that BU will play UCLA (and then Central Michigan) in a "two-day, four-team" event in Vegas early in the season:

This is true. Its the Empire Classic at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fourth team is Gonzaga. Bellarmine will play UCLA on 11/22 then Central Michigan on 11/23

RE: 2021-22 Season - BellarmineGrad - 07-26-2021 08:01 PM

Yep, Gonzaga was the rumored fourth team. Would be cool if BU could somehow work out a game against them as well (as was supposed to happen last year).

Notably, the BU press release about the Vegas event *does* mention Fleming and Claycomb as returning.

Wow, they pulled it off:

Talk about a "murderer's row" of a non-conference schedule!

Talk about a "murderer's row" of a non-conference schedule!

So we know of the following non-conference schedule:
@Purdue 11/9
@St. Mary's 11/17
@gonzaga 11/19
UCLA 11/22 @Las Vegas
Central Michigan 11/23 @Las Vegas
@W. Virginia 11/30

That is one heck of a tough schedule so far. Add the 16 conference games, leaves what 4-6 nonconference games left. I'm sure there will be a couple of cupcakes at home but do they owe a trip to Chattanooga? Could be another tough one. May only have 3-4 wins going into conference.

RE: 2021-22 Season - knightmoves - 08-04-2021 03:20 PM

Hard to believe, but school is about to get started, meaning basketball season is not far off. Usually its fun to get people to project who will be starting for BU. The really relevant question is who will be playing the most minutes. Probably not a real tough question to answer, with Pedro Bradshaw being the only loss from last season, the minutes played are not likely to change radically. Penn, Claycomb, and Fleming will be seeing 30+ minutes per game. I expect that Pfriem will be the main replacement for Bradshaw, so his minutes may go up to 25+. Justin Betts will probably be getting about 25 per game as well. The unkown in my book, is whether Devault and Theland will improve enough to get significantly more minutes than last season. I sure hope so, because the team really needs them. Another candiidate for big improvement and increased minutes is Bash Wieland. Of course there is always a question about freshman. My hunch is that Johnson is likely to be the only frosh to get much time and I doubt he will be getting many minutes early on. My concern is that the team lacks a scoring punch and Scotty may play Johnson more than he would have liked, hoping to get some needed scoring.

Looks like the final November non-conference schedule is out with two additions - Murray St and St Mary’s.

Good stuff. I think some article somewhere slipped St. Mary's in among the UCLA and Gonzaga news, but this is the first I've heard about Murray -- very nice addition to the schedule, and I think they'd be a great regular opponent.

So why no West Virginia on that schedule? The WVa site still lists the game on Nov 30 @WVa
