The vast majority of the current RBI Board consists of ex-players who (with the exception of one or two) are not major supporters of the program. I believe only one of the three Board members who are not former players is a major booster....and by major booster I mean someone who has provided $10,000+ in support annually or who has given over $50,000 to the program over the past 10 years. Hardly not enough to qualify to be in a search committee. Just curious what guidance he may be seeking or using if any. Are you saying current RBI Club Board members account for 35% of RBI Club donations? That may, in reality, be true, but only because the annual donations have dropped over 50% since the new RBI Club was reformed after Wayne left. I believe I was told that this year's total dues was under $100,000. Wayne's last year we had 10 donors who gave $10,000+. Only three of those remain. And the number of RBI Club members (the majority of whom give $1,000 annually) has declined significantly under the new regime. And, BTW, the reason I used "major booster" in my response is because I was responding to another poster who suggested that Jk should be seeking input from RBI Club Board members, assuming that were the major supporters of the program. I know he hired a firm to help identify candidates last time. Why in the world would he go to the RBI Club board. With only a couple exceptions, the biggest baseball boosters/supporters are not are the RBI Club board. The problem at Rice is that $10K is a major booster. I’ll quit arguing but the current RBI board is invested in all ways and not just in one sport and you could figure that out pretty easily looking at the owl club annual report instead of implying that nobody on the board would be worthy of selecting a new head coach. Again, I don't where you're getting your info, but it's just not true. BTW, the biggest baseball supporters also support all the other Rice sports, and only 2 or 3 of them are on the RBI Club board. And I never said $10,000/yr defined a major booster. Rather, I said that a major booster of Rice baseball alone donated at least $10,000/yr to the program and have given over $50,000 to the program over the past 10 years. I was being generous. In reality, the few that qualify by my definition have given considerably more than that. I also never implied that nobody on the RBI Club board was worthy of selecting a new head coach. I simply said that there are only a select few on the Board who are major boosters of the program. Stop twisting my words. Hope we don’t come to regret this but if any of the other candidates discussed here come on board I think we’ll be fine. Rice on the clock. RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers - mrbig - 05-30-2021 09:54 AM It is pretty easy to imagine a scenario where Berkman can lead HBU into becoming a baseball power akin to what Graham did at Rice. We will see, be his cache and personality can get him a good chunk of the way, the question will be how good he is as an actual coach. And while I would have welcomed him had he been named to replace Bragga, I think there are a couple others who are better fits for the job Rice, who can better sell the values of Rice. Yes, he'd bring buzz to the program, but not without risks. The risks for HBU are considerably smaller. I think some reservations about hiring him as a coach were that he could turn into another Clyde Drexler. I think he now has motivation to ensure that does not occur. This move seems to make sense for everyone - and if Lance does well, this will provide him the resume builder he needs to come back to the program (or jump to bigger things). Sounds like all is quiet on our hiring front? RE: Bragga is OUT Per Kendall Rogers - Fort Bend Owl - 05-31-2021 07:08 AM I suspect a new coach will be named this week. It's certainly not the most important element of the job search but the Rice baseball camps are scheduled to begin on June 14th. These are important camps especially the HS camps for possible recruit evaluations especially after not being able to have them last summer. |
