I don't use Twitter but apparently the men's and women's basketball twitter accounts were shutdown. Here is miniums article on what happened.

DMCA enforcement is omnipresent and ruthless. I respect the need to protect rightholders' ownership of their works but there has to be a better way to regulate it, particularly given how many billions of social-media accounts can easily run afoul of it, accidentally or not.

Being a very inactive SM user myself I confess to not knowing much about this, but is there a procedure at Twitter with regards to copyright infringement offenses? I know YouTube has a strike system where you get warned, then suspended, and ultimately banned. Does Twitter? Because either a) ODU's Twitter offended repeatedly despite warnings and softer punishments, or b) Twitter's system is "one strike and you're out". At the very least you'd think there'd be a grace period to get your account into compliance (pretty sure at least on first offense with YouTube you're given time to edit or remove the offending video).

Good news that they're hiring a SM person. Social media is an important enough of a marketing/advertising vehicle that at this point all but the smallest D1 schools should have a dedicated employee to create and update content. If they had one five years ago, there's a good chance they know enough to avoid this mess in the first place.

I'm shocked we didn't have one already to be honest. My wife manages businesses social media accounts. She does ghost posting and photography/imagery for them and helps them grow their brand.

And the larger companies and orgs often have employees dedicated to types of social media (video, text) or even specific networks. Ideally you don't have the same person working on your LinkedIn and TikTok accounts, but better to have that than to have said person doing both while also handling press releases and broadcast advertising. So a good, if overdue, first step.

Agreed. We're not a giant firm but my firm has a single person dedicated to external communication. But, she's got others in marketing that can also post to facebook, linkedin, instagram, twitter, etc and she is the single point for wordpress (website) but others can chip in and post and do to all the platforms. Like our visual identity manager makes sure all the imaging that goes out on any of the SM platforms are coherent and aligned. And they all are always thinking about IP/DRM and copyright.

So if they knew there could be problems with some old tweets, maybe they should have gone back through the last several years of tweets and ferret out the offending tweets. Not easy, I know, but it would have been much better to be proactive than reactive in this case. How much damage has been done?

I think they can't based on how it reads. They were shut down and can't get into it again to do anything like that. Just slammed the door shut on them.

Part of that schedule looks funky. The host of the two MT games have to be swapped right?

I’m talking about before they were shut down. When they heard of other schools accounts being shut down, that was the time to check their own compliance status. Don’t wait for Twitter to find it. If you found out people were getting audited by the IRS for a deduction they took 5 years ago, wouldn’t you go through your tax returns to see if you took that offending deduction? Or do you just hope you don’t get audited?

Twitter limits an account to normally only access their last ~3200 tweets through the timeline. They would have needed the actual URLs to go back that far.

I could be misreading it since it's not exactly easy on the eyes, but we don't play USM this year? That's usually a free win

RE: 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule thread - Old Dom Swag - 07-15-2021 04:01 PM

They goofed up the Myrtle Beach Invitational bracket and are reworking it. ODU was scheduled to play ECU in the 1st round but they are playing a few weeks later. Expect the new bracket out within a week

RE: 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule thread - The Doctor Is In - 07-15-2021 08:18 PM

Wondering out loud...why it is that there are so many snafus surrounding the ODU athletics program...bad luck, inattention to detail, karma, other? I’m sure someone will answer with the comment “Well, ODU did not set the schedule”, which is probably correct. I guess my bigger concern is why do these types of things seem to happen to this program an inordinate number of times? Venting over. Carry on.

RE: 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule thread - Blue_Trombone - 07-18-2021 08:36 PM

I dunno. Bad luck? Or just selection bias. This has happened to ODU before and I'm not sure it isn't a common occurrence so I'm not sure if this is really anything to get worked up over

RE: 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule thread - Cyniclone - 07-19-2021 12:41 AM

The Myrtle Beach thing? They just didn't do their research on who plays who in the regular season and presumed that nobody was on anybody's schedule in the tournament, then matched everyone accordingly. Honestly it makes me no never mind if ODU-ECU happens twice this season; we play conference teams twice all the time, why should a in-season rematch with a school two hours down 13 be an issue for us *or* ECU?

Curious who we end up playing in the opening round. Guessing the ECU game was considered a 4-5 game, though I never saw the original bracket. Hope we don't get shunted into a tougher opening-round opponent like Utah State or Nebraska because of it.

RE: 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule thread - Gilesfan - 07-19-2021 08:39 AM

Yeah, it seems pretty dumb. Who cares how many times play them?

RE: 2021-22 men’s basketball schedule thread - monarx - 07-20-2021 08:51 PM

I’d be fine playing ECU twice. 2 wins over the AAC will help the sos.
