If my school could only win one national championship what would it be? - jaybird44 - 05-06-2021 10:15 PM

I am an old dominion man. I am going to have to say mens basketball because of the history, but hey, I would take any. LOL. I would love for it to be against UNC. How about you? Can't wait to see these answers.

Take any chanpionships? Your school has already won national championships field hockey and women's basketball.

If I could take a national championship in any sport, it would be in the sport in which my school, Appalachian State, already has 3 national titles - football, but next time at the highest level. That's not gonna happen, so basketball. Who am I kidding - that's not happening either. So I'd say baseball - also a long shot but more realistic as G5/Sun Belt level schools win that from time to time. As a father of a daughter who wants to play field hockey at App, I'd be happy with a championship in that drastically underrated sport as well.

You are right but I mean the next one lol. Good luck on field hockey.

I will take a University of Montevallo national championship in baseball or men's soccer.

Men's basketball for Illinois in the sense that it would be a fulfillment of a multi-generational goal. We are one of (if not the) top programs to have never won a national championship.

To be sure, I'd take a football championship in a heartbeat, too, but that would be more like winning the lottery (a total lucky fluke).

Football for Memphis as that would be a groundbreaking event (a G5 program wins it all)

Men's basketball for Vanderbilt

Men's basketball for DePaul (though the women's program is more deserving and more capable; and I would be very pleased)

Football for North Carolina

Football for Cincinnati (see Memphis)

Baseball or women's basketball for Belmont (a men's hoops title is simply too farfetched)

Football for Indiana

I would probably have Illinois as the all-time program to have not won a hoops title.

For the past 20 years or so: Gonzaga

Memphis (and it's painful) would be in the mix, too.

First, for Virginia Tech, I'd like to see them win a championship in football.

Then, another football championship, because anybody can win one.

Then, a third, because not many schools have three.

etc.

I would do just about anything short of murdering my wife or child for South Carolina to win it all in football.

My schools:

SUNY Brockport...football
Florida State: This might surprise folks but baseball, since we've been in so many CWS's without one title.[/align]

Abilene Christian has won 57 national championships, mostly in track and field when we were still a D2 program. I’d trade almost all of those trophies for a D1 championship in basketball.

Absolutely. I'd settle for a women's volleyball championship. Illinois was the national runner up one year and made the Final Four another year in the 2010's.

bill dazzle said North Carolina and Indiana would rather win a football national championship. It makes sense since neither school has ever won a national championship in football. I don't know if Penn State fans think the same way in preferring a men's basketball championship over another football championship. Penn State men's basketball is like Illinois football, it's not something we would dream out.

How about Alabama fans? Or Ohio State fans (they did win a men's national championship in 1960 but almost no one remembers that without looking it up)?

As for Villanova, a football championship is an FCS championship. If Villanova wins a men's basketball title, they can say they're better than Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky. If Villanova wins an FCS title, they can say they're better than North Dakota State! I don't care if it's Villanova's fourth, it means way more than an "NIT" title.

I’ll say hockey for Ohio St (we don’t have a NC yet)

For Cincinnati I’ll say another in men’s basketball—I know football isn’t going to happen in the current structure.

RE: If my school could only win one national championship what would it be? - buckeye1022 - 05-07-2021 10:43 AM

Ohio State would still be football to most, it's just all that matters. I say basketball though. I've seen 2 football titles, I wasn't around in 1960.

Toledo football, even though it can never happen in the current system.

Hockey, but no one outside Kalamazoo & the small NCAA hockey world would notice

Other then that, football

Yeah ... "wanting" Kent State to win the Tourney feels impossible enough, that after the big publicity Kent State got in the area just for going to the College World Series, I would have to say baseball.

To be clear, schmolik, I noted I would prefer IU and UNC win national titles in football (instead of men's hoops), for the reason you correctly note. But I'm not sure other Hoosier and Tar Heel fans would agree with me.

Baseball. We’ve won national titles in sailing, but that doesn’t have the same national viability. Good thing in college baseball if you get a couple very good starting pitchers and a decent starting lineup, you can win a conference, have a good enough record you don’t have to win the conference tourney to get in the regionals, then be a 2 or a 3 seed in a regional and get hot for a few days.

CofC won a regional as a 4 in 2014, then lost two 1-0 games to Texas Tech in the Super Regionals. If you find a way to win two Super games, you’re in Omaha and then anything can happen in Omaha. Coastal did it, so why not us?

Well if we're on the best men's basketball team to never win, here's the latest stat from FOX Sports: most number of wins.

Surprised who #1 is.

For Sacramento State on the men’s side, it would be FCS Football or Baseball. Doubt we will ever be for hoops.
For the women, I’d say volleyball because historically we’ve won two lower division national championships plus have had a top 40 program throughout most of our D-I days. Also softball.
