Why freshmen? - MICHAELSPAPPY - 04-30-2021 12:37 PM

Folks who can nab one-and-doners still have a reason, but what is the movitation for folks at our level to recruit freshmen any more? If you get him, and he turns out to be any good, he probably is going to go someplace else. Return on investment in developing players is going to be hard to come by any more. Just become a Basketball Rustler and raid the other fellow's corral. Let him do the work breaking in the kids.

I have always liked signing freshman and watching them develop. Really doesn't make much sense now, especially if you do a good job developing them.

This is one of the things I fear about Darrell and one of the reasons I refer to him as an old school coach. This rule fundamentally changes the rules of recruiting and if we shun transfers and just sign freshman, they will leave for P5 schools if they get a chance. Plain and simple. Now the only good thing is that I’m not sure all of the foreigns will. MJS mentioned in an earlier post if I consider Beard old school, I do with the exception that Beard has shown the ability to roll with the changes, I want to see that out of Darrell and I have not yet.

And all that is just one more step toward making big men irrelevant, because now there is even less incentive to recruit them young and bring them along - UNLESS you are at the one-and-done level.

Concerning Walker, I refer you back to the article in the ADG’s last Sunday edition.

I've always felt we had a better shot at getting good Jucos, because unlike freshman they likely care less about the whole "college life" thing. They just want to find a place where they can play right away and probably will be more attracted to our apartment housing rather than living on an on-campus dorm. I think the same thing would apply to transfers who have already experienced campus life, somewhere else, and had enough of on campus housing. We can make this whole transfer thing work to our benefit if we play it right. Haven't seen evidence of it yet (except on the women's side), but there are still 100's of players left in the tranfer portal.

I'm hoping his comment was to cover himself for not getting the LR/AR transfers that many of us thought he might, not an indication that he was really not interested in signing transfers. When we are losing upper classmen, to other schools, it makes no sense not to fill those sports with other experienced players.

With all due respect to you MJS, and all others who post on this board, including myself, I seriously doubt that Walker or his staff pay much, if any, attention to the thoughts posted on this board. And that applies to all other coaching staffs in College Basketball that I know of.

Don't disagree with you, but I think even some of his razorback friends probably suggested he try an sign Ethan Henderson, Desi Sills, and/or Darious Hall. Every hog fan knew the first 2 were available and many were aware that Hall was transferring again. I just wondered if his comment (I'm not much interested in transfers) was a "cover" for not getting any of those kids. Just hard to imagine we were not interested in any of the Arkansas kids in the portal, since most were 3 or 4 stars out of high school.

Again, Walker probably isn’t interested in anything fans on our board or anyone else’s board post. I would venture that the only Razorback friends he might be interested in listening to are named Stephens and Walton who made sure he got his job! And as far as I know, they have limited knowledge of what is involved in college basketball coaching. I see no reason not to just take Walker at his word.
