Chris Kovensky - Obiwan - 04-29-2021 08:21 AM

Been with the program for what 10 years abs named an assistant in 2019. Is a personal trainer for several players playing at the high level . What are the chances he becomes our next head coach ?

Zero, unless you know something we don't

Hi Chris, I did not realize you posted on this board. Your story is a good tale of hard work. I just think you are too early in the coaching process to be considered a head coach.

I know he coaches the Alumni team in that summer $ league; beyond that you gotta think they'd have lots of guys with real D-1 coaching experience. No knock on him, I hear he's excellent at what he does.

Kovy is awesome and he has a bunch of guys (Bazemore, Hassell, Matt Coleman) who would vouch for him, but he will not be our next head coach. Now, in 10 years, he might be head coaching material, so let's keep an eye on his career trajectory.

Yeah I had your same reaction.

Chris Koclanes might be a name we watch for in the future as well.

Likely auto text thing . Talked with the coaches and they like the team we have - working on last piece of the puzzle . Btw didn’t mean Chris is our next coach in order - but building his resume slowly - got to start somewhere.

No chance - and I would bet my life he will never be a D1 coach. Not his wheelhouse.

RE: Chris Kovensky - ODUCoach - 05-14-2021 01:31 PM

If we're thinking future ODU coaches, Mike Jones will have to be on that list. He has no college experience right now, but that seems like it's going to change real soon.

He seems like someone who in a couple/few years (if he takes this VT job) would fit the bill of exactly what we should be looking for. Young, up and coming, ties to a top notch HS program and fertile recruiting grounds, and an alum on top of all that. He sure does check a lot of boxes if he can coach at the college level, and I have no reason to believe he can't. He learned from one of the best at Dematha.

RE: Chris Kovensky - FearTheLion - 05-15-2021 05:45 PM

IMO, we should've been the school giving him college experience, not VT. Hard to think he's going to be over there getting experience and then looking back this way as a next step.

RE: Chris Kovensky - Blue_Trombone - 05-16-2021 08:08 PM

Why not? Going to different places helps you build connections. Networking is a big thing in the business and the more people you know the better. The fact that it's a P5 school in Virginia honestly really helps their chances if you ask me.

RE: Chris Kovensky - FearTheLion - 05-17-2021 08:11 AM

Maybe my post wasn't that clear. I have no issues with how Mike views his path, I just would want Jeff to have reached out before VT had the vision to do so. Not real sure that we haven't to be honest, but I sure hope we had. Either way, certainly no big deal. I'm certain that Mike Jones has tons of connections--and in much better places than Blacksburg, VA. But assuming he had D1 coaching aspirations over the years, I sure would want my alma mater to see that as interesting. Personally I always thought of him as a Stags lifer.

Just wondering. Has Mike Jones ever sent a player ODU's way?
