Some more interesting tidbits

-ODU has only had one season without double digit conference wins.

-FAU is the only team to not yet record a double digit season of CUSA wins during this period.

-It's been long chronicled on this board that Western hasn't won a championship yet in CUSA but it really pops out at you when you see how much success they have had from year to year.

Many people on the board here call us a mid tier CUSA team.

RE: CUSA Basketball Since ODU joined - Monarchblue - 04-27-2021 12:08 PM

ODU Finished:

20-21 - 4th (4th is generous. 5th is probably more accurate.)
19-20 - 8th
18-19 - 1st (Won Conference Championship)
17-18 - 2nd
16-17 - 3rd
15-16 - 4th
14-15 - 3rd

4th or worse - 3
3rd or better - 4
Championship - 1

All that shows is that the top four or five teams in the conference are all very good.

I really hope Charlotte turns it around. They are supposed to be a basketball-first school like us. Used to be in A10. Hard to believe.

This also goes to show how badly MTSU fell off a cliff once Kermit left.

I thought Sanchez was a good hire, seemed to bring in some good talent but so far nothing doing.

MT was midpack the first year, then good, then utterly dominated the league for 2 years then fell off a cliff when Kermit left.

Nice win percentage. But to only make it to the dance 1 time since joining tells me how bad Conference USA is.

RE: CUSA Basketball Since ODU joined - ODUwildman - 04-27-2021 10:04 PM

How many total bids has CUSA gotten to the big dance since 14-15?

It's like being the second skinniest kid at fat camp. CUSA isn't bottom of the barrel, but it isn't good.

CUSA is underrated and we all know it, just like the CAA was. That, and it took YEARS for the CAA to get more than one bid to the NCAA tournament. And even then, it was a crap shoot with teams on the last 4 in last 4 out lists. its not like we had a solid claim on 2 or three bids every season in the CAA. We are now, and were then, one good win, or one bad loss away from relevance or irrelevance. Our situation has not changed.

It hasn't changed in terms of being in a mostly one bid league, but we are now in a conference with more members fighting for the one bid, terrible geography, no reasonable access to away games, no rivalries, horrible media presence and very little to excite fans.

When we first joined the CAA everyone swore up and down about the move. They said we gave up relevance in a strong conference for a weaker one with no teams, of relevance, anyone cared about, except for maybe VCU. They were not the bitter rival then that they are now. Everyone I went to games with swore we did it (moved to the CAA) so we could dominate the league and get some guaranteed NCAA bids rather than fighting tooth and nail for a bid in a tougher conference. So again, things have not changed. One bid league fighting for relevance with 4 or 5 good teams at the top of the conference that are undervalued becasue of a number of factors. Rinse, Wash, Repeat

CAA got multiple bids in years where it performed well and had a lot of big wins out of conference. Not just the Virginia schools that left... even Drexel and Hofstra had years where they racked up big OOC wins. That has yet to happen in CUSA.

Off the top of my head:

ODU > Syracuse
ODU> LSU
Marshall>Witchita State
MTSU > Vanderbilt
MTSU>Minnesota
MTSU>Michigan State
WKY >Arkansas
WKY > WVA
WKY>Wisconsin
WKY>Purdue
WKY>Ole Miss

WKU beat Alabama on the road last year too. Alabama was a top 5 team most of the year

Not to mention all of the first round upsets every CUSA team has been able to accomplish in the last 6 years or so (except for ODU), but I think Giles hit on some of those too

I think it says more about how difficult it has been for ODU to win a CUSA title, which probably also tells us that this league is stronger, not weaker.

My view is that having this high of a win percentage in a "good" conference would have earned some outright bids or at least consistent bubble talk. While I do think C-USA is tougher/better than the media's perception, the end result speaks for itself. Regardless if it's perception or another cause, this is a one-bid league. You take our win percentage to some other conferences and we would have been dancing a heck of a lot more.

RE: CUSA Basketball Since ODU joined - bench jockey - 04-28-2021 03:13 PM

Isn't that more the fault of the other conference teams than ODU?

It always amazes how there are some "fans" on here that can't stomach even modestly positive news about the program. WTH are you even fans?

I think we all agree with that, but I think what this was supposed to indicate, more than anything, is that we don't suck as much as some people think we do, and in fact, during our tenure in the conference we have won more games than any other team. We are a consistent winner and, in general, have avoided the ups and downs, in our record, that other teams have experienced. I know we don't have the championship and post season bids that ll of us hope, but for kids who are looking to play and to win, we are a good place to be.
