UNOFFICIAL Spring Game Scrimmage - emu steve - 04-16-2021 12:41 PM

While the forum debates weighty matters, today is a happy day for EMU FB fans.

I started by reading the beginning of the spring prospectus.

I was shocked to see that we have 20 starters among the 22 starters on offense and defense. We lost one starter on each side of the ball.

And we return 3 specialists who are very important cogs in the kicking games.

If I lived the last four months in a cave and just read that, I would be wildly optimistic. Those numbers are almost unheard of.

And as Greg noted in his conversation with C.C. we have two very good QBs.

I'm not sure how anyone can be anything but optimistic. This is a very good, deep team. My pick to surprise in the MAC West.

P.S. Sports Info did a great job on the materials for this scrimmage. I see a lot of SI stuff from various schools. Our SI folks do a really nice job.

No more excuses! Return 20 of 22 starters! This's the easiest schedule that CC had had in 8 seasons! 8 wins and A bowl win period! 3-1 OOC and 5-3 MAC should be expected........

We’ll see if returning 10 starters on defense is a good thing or not. Hopefully there’s some improvement on that side of the ball. Otherwise, it’ll be a long year.

True, but I've never seen a team return 10 starters on one side of the ball and regress.

I wasn't going to go there..........Can CC play to win instead of always trying not to lose! The offense shouldn't be any problem at all!

No posts from The Factory? Did they confiscate phones? Lol.

Counted 6 players on crutches. Two occured during the scrimmage. Seemed to be playing mostly the 2 & 3 deep guys. Didn't see anything spectacular from any of backup QBs. Saw lots of mccarty and evans , both looked good. Of biggest concern was no Boone.

Kelley had a pick. Imagine where that kid was a few years ago. Heckuva story.

Hutchison looks faster than Bryant. Both look very capable though.

Samson is a horse.

Small and Joseph were getting plenty of action at WR.

We ran the wildcat Samson scored a,TD on that formation. Jackson seems,to be the,QB of choice to run that formation.

No Boone Bess or Smith at RB.
No May at QB.

Dear Friends,
I thought the offense looked good, and liked the run game. We have some very good receivers too.
The defensive backs played close to the receivers most of the time, so, even though the receivers made some nice catches, they were tackled immediately.
Many underclassmen played, so, to me, it was encouraging to see such good play on both sides of the ball.
Fan interest is there. Probably 300 or so fans at the scrimmage.

Kicking looked good. Julien bombed a punt that went from I believe the 25 or 30 and one-bounced into the endzone. Ryland was hitting practice field goals with no pressure coming at him and hit one 57-yarder. There were no real returns even attempted on kickoffs and punts.

Hutchinson looked good, so did Bryant. Hutchinson appeared to edge Bryant on the timing of patterns as Hutch seemed to more consistently hit receivers in stride downfield, where Ben was over/under throwing them frequently. I think that really comes down to Hutch's experience with the offense and is a gap that could narrow considerably as Ben gains more reps with the receivers. While both looked pretty mobile, Ben may have had the edge when they turned to their feet. Drummond made a pretty acrobatic catch. Also heard Knue's and Beydoun's names a few times on receptions.

Reyes made some solid defensive plays including a sack or two, tfl's, and some pressures. Pass defense seemed to improve as the evening went on with at least one interception and a few breakups. While the tackling was more like "touch" at times, there were a few solid hits that reverberated the crack of pads quite impressively and a few instances of pressure on the QB's.

I think I heard Boone had a family situation to attend to so was not at the scrimmage.

You had to use a camera phone to take a picture fill out a form to get a COVID pass to get in. Thank goodness for nice gentlemen who helped me. This will be a real cluster if used during the regular season with larger crowds.
Also you could not sit in the first three rows marked with yellow tape.

#1 Hutchinson QB TD on a nice run by Evans out of the wildcat formation
#2 Bryant QB Small had a couple of catches, defense stop.
3# Hutchinson QB beautiful drive featuring Hutchinson on a 4 and 4 keeper, some solid runs by Evans and a beautiful throw and catch by Knue in the end zone.
#4 Bryant QB-Joseph had a nice catch, #67 hurt, Greg Kelley INT.
#5 Bryant QB-again some nice runs by Evans defensive stop
#6 Hutchinson had a nice keeper, McCarty looked solid at RB, TD flea flicker from Beydoun to Oakes
#7 Bryant QB this featured Foor at RB, Jackson got a first down on a wildcat formation run.
#8 Smith QB-#26 hurt, defense stop.
# 9 Kaminski QB some nice catches by Joseph
#10 Smith QB-Small with some nice catches, Jackson out of the wildcat defense stop
#11-Kaminski QB-fumble
#12 Kaminski QB defense 2 sacks
#13- Smith QB Foor had some nice runs, missed FG

Xavier and Westmoreland along with Small had some nice catches, Goodman had a nice pop you could hear in the stands, Julien looked good but his replacement well....Kaminski could go to a D2 and be a solid starter, Smith has an arm. In my opinion Hutchinson is clearly number 1. Jackson takes the place of Grissom in the offense and he has improved overall. This may be his year. Overall the team looks solid.

Thanks good stuff. Appears we are loaded at QB. Have enough for 2 MAC teams. I would take Hutch-Bryant-Smith-May any day as a QB quartet. QB is one position where a team wants to be really deep - heaven help some teams if their #1 QB goes down.

Didn't look but I thought you could print and fill out Covid form before coming.

I doubt Covid will be any issue by fall ("I know it is easy - you don't live in MI'). I would be shocked. Here is the latest data from CDC. As of this a.m. 80% of those 65+ had had at least one shot. Overall ~50% of all 18+. Over 10M people receive their first dose EACH WEEK. Those people are at 80 - 90% immunity by 14 days after 1st shot. I saw a study where initial immunity was around 90% around day 14 and then increases to around 95% after the 2nd shot - the 2nd shot is in large part for durability. Don't want the antibodies to diminish after say 3 or 4 months.

One thing about hot spots. The thumb is really hot now. These hot spots seem to move around the country and burn themselves out and new one pop up elsewhere.
