UC Mechanical Engineering comes in 3rd Nationally Fluid Power Bike Challenge. - Nobones - 04-15-2021 08:34 PM
My Nephew Chris Schalk and the rest of the team came in 3rd for the senior project in the National Fluid Power Associations Bike Challenge and took first place at UC Tech Expo. Lets see if I can add the video that they made.

Thanks. Yeah he is from my wife's side of the family. They have all the brains. His dad UC grad Architect major. Runs is own company with another UC grad.

I encourage all UC fans to watch the referenced video. There is much more to a university than the basketball and football teams. The best part of any university is the work done by students applying what they have learned in the classroom in innovative ways.
Obviously nobones is proud because he is related to one of the students. All UC grads should be proud because the engineering students involved in the project indirectly represent all of us and they have represented us very well indeed.

Glad to here they had the competition. My daughter's aerospace engineering flight competition was cancelled last year.

I suppose there's some impressive engineering involved in that thing, but from the standpoint of an avowed contrarian and life-long cyclist, and as a practical matter, of what value is a long, heavy, clunky bike festooned with a bunch of tanks and tubes and circuitry? To what end the competition to design such a monstrosity? Is there such a thing as a low-speed Tour de Parking Lot? Would a rider on one of those things be able to complete Colorado's Copper Triangle, Iron Horse Classic, or Triple Bypass? Is anyone going to tour from coast to coast on a bike like that? What's the point?
Efficiency? The really smart guys involved in bicycle design are producing 17-pound, carbon-fiber wonders designed with frame geometries and reliable, feather-weight components to meet the needs and desires of... cyclists. Power up by eating a piece of toast slathered with peanut butter, touch the pedal of a bike like that, and it goes.

Yeah, from a cyclist's point of view it looks like a disaster.
They mentioned they used wheels, handlebars, seats, etc from a donor bike they received. I imagine they were required to use that 100 year old technology on those parts. The part they were responsible for was to use fluid dynamics within the constraints of the competition parameters, which likely change every year to keep teams from copying previous designs.
Apparently they did an excellent job, as their placing points out.

The point is to do something awesome.
The skills they learned from this competition will teach them how to apply technologies in a way to achieve a goal. The "goal" here wasn't something practical, but the methods they learned through this competition could easily be transferred to a goal that is practical.
To quote one of my professors from my PhD program: Practical? Practical?!? We're academics, we don't do anything practical.
