Good hire. Considered by many to be one of the best of not the best up-and-coming coach in college basketball.

Having a National Championship ring to show to recruits certainly can’t hurt.

RE: Wes Miller - bearcatmark - 04-14-2021 07:22 PM

Wes Miller was easily my favorite of the mid/low major head coach options.

RE: Wes Miller - Mike In Clifton - 04-14-2021 07:25 PM

my only concern at this point is he has spent his whole career in North Carolina.

Well, he can start off by finding himself a few Eric Hicks' to come with him.

I'm happy with the choice. Well respected down here. I think he has tremendous upside with our program's brand and resources compared to UNCG. Let's get the train back on the tracks!

Bringing Isaiah Miller with him would be a nice start.

RE: Wes Miller - Murph45 - 04-14-2021 07:29 PM

I haven’t follow this guy much but looking at his overall record (some decent 20 win seasons of late) and a few NCAA tourney appearances how is it any better than JB and his two winless NCAA tourney appearances with a mid major or even a Pat Kelsey who wins 20 games and makes the tourney out of Winthrop (I’m in no way advocating PK for the job just comparing resumes and PK has a new job). So hoping someone can give me some reason to put him above those two in terms of coaching CV and success. Second, what if anything do we know about his recruiting chops?

Looking back a few years, he has recruits from NC, Missouri, New Hampshire. Basketball recruiting is from all over. His only being in NC isn't a concern of mine. My concern is what his staff will look like and if he can bring in recruits at the level we expect - Mick's best and better.

I am not opposed to the hire and will support. BUT, this was a hell of a ride just to replace one up-and-comer with another.

Ha ha ha. I called the picture for the tweet...

RE: Wes Miller - Bear Catlett - 04-14-2021 07:38 PM

I have to admit, I was intrigued by Erik Martin.

James White's words about bringing in someone who was one of us and would care about the program beyond his own gain really rang true to me.

Wes Miller.

Haven't come across too many UNCG games recently. I've heard the name but I doubt if I would even know the guy if he walked up to me on the street. However, he's my guy now and I hope he tears the place up here.

Come to think of it, I'd never heard of Bob Huggins in 1989 either.

Which indicates that maybe there was a very good reason?

RE: Wes Miller - UCGrad1992 - 04-14-2021 07:39 PM

Quote:Wes Miller has been named the 28th University of Cincinnati men's basketball head coach, Director of Athletics John Cunningham announced Wednesday.

Miller, who comes to UC after a decade as the head coach at UNC Greensboro, will be introduced to the media at a Friday morning press conference at 11 a.m. ET inside Fifth Third Arena. The press conference will air live on ESPN+ and will be streamed through the @GoBEARCATS social-media platforms.

His six-year contract is pending approval by the UC Board of Trustees.

Regarded as one of the top young coaches in college basketball, Miller built the Spartans into perennial championship and NCAA Tournament contenders, was named as ESPN.com's No. 1 Coach Under 40 in May 2020 and also was tabbed for The Athletic's 40 Under 40 list a year ago.

"I am incredibly excited to welcome Wes into the Bearcats family," Cunningham said. "He is an extremely dynamic coach and mentor who impressed me with his drive, focus and attention to detail. He's a proven winner as a head coach and was able to rebuild a program and lead a remarkable turnaround at UNCG over the last decade. We cast a very wide net in this search and Wes emerged as the right coach to lead the Bearcats into the future."

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be the head coach at the University of Cincinnati," Miller said. "I'm thankful for President Pinto and (AD) John Cunningham for bringing me into the Bearcats family. I am honored to lead such a storied program and excited to get to work. I also can't thank UNCG enough because I wouldn't be here without my players and athletic director Kim Record. This last decade coaching the Spartans has been extremely rewarding."

Miller's collegiate head coach and mentor Roy Williams had high praise for his former player.

"Wes Miller is one of the most outstanding young coaches in our game and what he did at UNC- Greensboro makes me believe he is THE most outstanding," Williams said. "As a player at North Carolina he came closer to reaching his full potential than any player I've ever coached. His energy, his determination, his intelligence and his care for young people convinces me that he will continue at that level. I am so happy for him

Might have been, but odd that it hasn't seen the light of day, not even via anon Twitter.
