New MBB Coaching Thread (Assistant Coach) - emu steve - 04-09-2021 10:55 AM

Pick the next EMU Assistant Coach.

Assuming today or Monday we'll have a new coach, time to staff up...

https://hoopdirt.com/job/assistant-mens-basketball-coach-eastern-michigan-university-2/

Normally, this is a nearly impossible task to guess an asst coach. However, once we know the HC maybe he will go fishing in a pond we know.

I'm still intrigued by the possibility that Boykins, if he has a comfortable relationship with our next HC, might be willing to take a seat on the bench.

It is certainly the next step if he wants to be in the coaching profession.

If they're posting the Assistant Coach job, it makes sense that the Head Coach announcement is imminent. Boykins would be a great choice.

A new coach at least for the first year might be wise to either retain Cline or Mondro as an assistant.

RE: New MBB Coaching Thread (Assistant Coach) - emu steve - 04-09-2021 11:22 AM

I just checked, in case BobW wants to apply, there is a 2nd such position posted.

Don't know if operating the clock counts for much. BobW can counsel players on the 30-second clock. Lol.

So how many assistant coaching jobs have been posted?

I saw two.

I believe we still have Mondro and maybe our DOBO running the show while we await a new HC.

I have NO idea how the asst coaches contracts are. I believe in the industry some are 1-year and others 2-year. I believe Matt and Tony (Harvey) are gone.

I don't, for example, if Mondro is still covered by a contract which isn't expiring this FY.

I suspect a lot depends on the new HC. Someone may well want to keep Mondro who is our assoc. HC and has been an interim HC at another school.

If Mondro's contract isn't expiring and the new HC knows him, he just might keep him. Continuity is not a bad thing, IMHO.

Just my two cents, but if Mondro has a contract which extends into 2022, I say keep him and don't buy him out.

I do NOT, NOT know... But we have released two coaches and advertised two.

So the best I can speculate is that the athletic department hasn't done anything on one asst coach + DOBO.

It is very possible that the new HC will get to look at the incumbents, their employment status (contracts, etc.) and decide what to do.

Mondro is a very, very experienced hand at running at basketball program. Would make a nice bridge to the current program. Kang, I believe, was very well liked. It will be up to the new guy...

So, to me, the new guy gets to hire two asst coaches and then make a decision on two more (one of which is the DOBO).

In this case, I don't think we need to worry about continuity. Most of the best players from the previous regime are already gone. There is no one I am currently worried about losing.

Start over from scratch, and get the best assistants you can.

Just for laughs, I'll go ahead and vote for Boykins and Jay Smith.

Continuity here mostly means keeping the ship afloat. Maybe transition is a better word.

Get Lorenzo Neely on staff. Being at Wayne State he would already know the PSL.

Stone may come with Heath.

RE: New MBB Coaching Thread (Assistant Coach) - EAGLE KING - 04-12-2021 10:59 AM

Also Dennis Hopson may join his staff, was at BG and currently Head Coach at Lourdes.

I know nothing, but what I READ. He was summarily dismissed at Rouge. The functional equivalent of pack up your stuff and be out by 3:00 p.m.

No one said anything except the 'direction of the program' (where have we heard that before????).

My guess is that Stone's career is going in the wrong direction. I'm not sure how getting canned at a high school qualifies him to be a college coach.

Probably true, but where you have a connection with the HC sometimes other issues are overlooked.

it would be neat if he brought Johnny Taylor along with him

I hear you, but better do very thorough 'due diligence' and find out why (and that means talking to all of the folks at River Rouge h.s. and school system.)

If there were say MHSAA infractions those could be overlooked, if a new employer wished. Anything else, probably not.

RE: New MBB Coaching Thread (Assistant Coach) - emu steve - 04-12-2021 11:36 AM

The coaching hires, two, could be fascinating. Here is Stan Heath's coaching bio per Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Heath

For roughly 10 years he was an asst coach at Wayne State, BG or MSU. Got to believe he knows the Neely, Thomas, Boykins, etc.

He coached against Boykins in the 1998 NCAAs. If Boykins would come he could learn from a very experienced, very capable HC. Would be a good career move for Earl.

Here's a darkhorse candidate. Heath played at EMU with Fred Cofield. Fred lives in the Ypsi area and currently works for the NY Knicks. I'm not sure that Fred would be interested in a college gig though.

I want to hear what will happen first with Mondro and Drew (DOBO). I believe Drew was very well liked by all during his time at EMU.

Mondro could be the odd man out. Heath doesn't need a really, really experienced hold over. Heath has been coaching for decades.

So maybe BobW gets his wish of Neely???

Here is some info on Cofield, compliments of Google...

Man, every time I search I find the names "Scott Perry" or "Troy Weaver" concerning the NBA pop up.

"Steve Mills and Scott Perry are hiring Fred Cofield, who played for the team in 1985-86, as a scout in their front office, league sources told ESPN.
