I know it might not work out, we had a reverse case that proved that.

Robert Spears, the big 6'10 3pt shooting specialist from Erwin never did much at ETSU.
transferred down to Milligan as a senior and dominated. Led the league in scoring/rebounding and led or was Top 5 in most other categories.

reported interest in a beast of a center 6'8 250 pounds in the portal

Rumored (because of Oliver's comments) interest in one of two transfers from

Tennessee earlier today. both 6'9, one a grad transfer who didn't pan out

and Top 100 4 star that didn't play due to COVID and a toe injury.

and I guess still rumors about the kid from Knoxville who is transferring from Florida (a PG)

Anybody else on the list? too lazy to list names if someone else wants to grab them.

Remind me who this is again

I agree with Dr. Noland's comments in the Jerseys for Justice videos: We live in a region that is both safe and welcoming.

Of course, he and I may be wrong. Would you mind specifically describing the five or six most egregious examples of racism in our area that you've witnessed or been told about?

Admitting my age — as a white male, I am blessed that Dr Martin Luther King also liberated me back in the day from the egregious wrongs of the Jim Crow system that I was too stupid to recognize as a child, youth, and young adult. I too desire to know the specifics of this post-Civil Right Movement racism so that I can join the best, solution seeking, positive forces to address it with REAL SOLUTIONS.

Off the top of my head, here are a few instances:

The Gorilla incident?

It’s Ok to Be White flyers plastered all over the plaques honoring the first black ETSU students and parts of campus

KKK propaganda and recruitment leaflets thrown into driveways around the area regularly.

Confederate flags being flown with pride ALL over this area and any suggestion that it might be inappropriate is met with incredulity and hatred, as well as southern revisionist views of the Civil War. (Weren’t you one bragging about this area being part of the Union so proudly during the war? And you don’t remotely find it problematic that now the pride has gone the other way?)

Responses to the protests last summer, with people threatening (and actually doing it) to run over protesters for calling for racial justice and equality. One of the leaders of the groups leading the protests had a CROSS burned in his yard.

Statements from our city commissioners around the topic of a Community Equity Board for JC were definitely considered racist by many community members. The fact they denied the need for the board, despite numerous minority groups showing the need, also shows how much the city actually cares about making progress.

Have you been in the comments section of local news outlets on Facebook ever? Between overt racism and less overt, but still racist comments, I’m amazed anyone would ask for this list in the first place.

When my family first moved here in 2013, a neighbor came by and was telling us about the neighborhood. She was pointing to various houses and telling me the names of the owners and a little about them. She pointed to one house and said “that’s the black family, but they are really nice”.

A good friend of mine is the only person of color in her immediate neighborhood. Neighbors are much friendlier and helpful to her white husband, but shun her and even cross to the other side of the street when out walking to avoid her. They were doing this prior to her actually meeting them. I’ve been with this friend out in public and have noticed unquestionably how different she is treated by servers, cashiers and others than I am.

Several friend who are minorities have expressed to me several times how terrifying it can be foe them to be alone in public places here, as they’ve been insulted, followed and some even threatened by random strangers.

And that’s just a start to this list. And it only talks about how people of color have been treated. I assure you, plenty of other minority groups have similar struggles in this area.

Dr. Noland may WANT this area to be seen as a welcoming and safe place, but for people who aren’t white and straight, it often isn’t.

I considered responding to this, but you did a better job than I probably would have. That the posters who prompted your response had to even 'ask' that question is very telling. And shows that, indeed, many are 'blind' to it. It's not that they agree or support racist stuff - they're just not aware of how it's kinda like a vague 'cloud' that envelops the area - a miasma of sorts. But that applies to lots of other places, too. Just sayin'.

What!?!? Rod, you're usually not off this bad. He was from SW Va, and transferred to (what has become) UVa-Wise:

the saga of Robert Spears

And I don't remember him being touted as a 3-pt. shooter. I mean, he *could* hit some shots out there, but he played in the paint 90% of the time. Sort of like a slightly weaker version of Brad Nuckles, with maybe slightly worse hands. He was behind Greg Dennis at first, and then Darell Jones and Patterson, so he didn't have much opportunity. Reminded me more of Craig Lester, matching him pretty well with the slow foot speed.

That’s got to be him because Des was talking about that he was concerned that there was over 2,000 players in the portal and that all those players wouldn’t find opportunities. He said he called I’m assuming Bolton Jr. and he was glad Des called because he hadn’t heard from any coaches since being in the portal for two days.

First commit of the Oliver era is 6-9 Isaac Farah from Fishers, IN. In a tournament in South Carolina he averaged 37.5 a game. He can also hit from outside. Doesn’t look “meh” to me.

Can Oliver recruit him again? and push him

Desmond Oliver, Walker's primary recruiter for Tennessee

Walker suffered a toe injury in November, missed time due to COVID protocol and apparently never got up to speed

Walker was the No. 81 overall prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, ranked No. 12 among power forwards and No. 5 in the state of Virginia, where he spent a post-grad year at Hargrave Military Academy.

“Corey has dealt with a lot,” Oliver said in January. “Corey has missed some time because of COVID. Corey has come in and had to change his body; he’s still going through that process. He’s been injured … and the reality is, he’s at the bottom on our depth chart and he has to work his way into the rotation. And that’s on Corey.

“That’s on him to see how many times can Corey get in the gym and work on his jump shot. Can he get his weight where it needs to be where now he’s one of the fastest guys at that position? So I love that. Because in the past, we’ve had guys that have done that

Isaac Farah is a two star with one other D1 offer, IUPUI. His other offers are D2 D2 Tusculum, Limestone, and Catawba.

I'm hearing Glover is coming to ETSU.

Not Russell Smith saying that is it?lol

Glover would be good. I am sure there are several out there we haven't heard of yet.
But at this point, I would take

Walker-Tennessee
Glover-Florida
Bolton-Iowa State
Wright-Western Michigan

I believe he has offers from Air Force and Néw Hampshire as well. Regardless he’s 6-9, can hit from distance and hit 80% from the free throw line. I wouldn’t call that a bad signee but any stretch.
