G6 FBS Conferences - SMUstang - 04-06-2021 08:50 AM

Is there room for another “G” FBS conference? CUSA has 14 members. That is too many most fans agree. If a few teams move up, and everybody goes to 10 members, there would be room for one more.

RE: G6 FBS Conferences - AssyrianDuke - 04-06-2021 08:57 AM

Sure, there are too many members in CUSA, especially now that the media revenue has dried up, but the problem for the teams that would form the new conference would be financial. Namely, how do they keep up the Joneses without CFB or NCAAT money. The NCAA could give them a waiver, but why would they? The people that run the money side of the NCAA (i.e., the P5) would not want be in a rush to share money with an upstart league, especially considering they don't want to share money with the leagues they have history with.

RE: G6 FBS Conferences - EigenEagle - 04-06-2021 09:04 AM

The MAC already has a geographically ideal conference and the AAC isn't giving up its arrangement to be with its closest geographic neighbors.

Maybe you can reorganize the MWC, CUSA, and Sun Belt into 4 new leagues but that might really just reduce to reorganizing the Sun Belt and CUSA.

Based on his other posts I think he's referring to an FBS WAC as a place for the extraneous teams to fall back to. CUSA may be a bit bloated but none of those schools would bolt for the WAC with it's current lineup.

You could definitely resort the 24 football members of the SBC and C-USA, along with 6 more from the ranks of NMSU/Liberty/FCS call ups into 3 10-team conferences.

Getting them to actually do it is the hard part.

RE: G6 FBS Conferences - Bogg - 04-06-2021 09:27 AM

Seems like it'd be far more likely to see a small number of additional G-level independent school(s) than the creation of a whole new conference when it comes to cleaning up some membership issues.

Since conferences are membership clubs, not wholly owned subsidiaries of larger corporations, so there is no individual "you" to do the sorting, it HAS to be done by schools wanting to form the conference.

Under NCAAT rules that discourage the proliferation of Division 1 conferences[+], and under an outside-of-but-allowed-by-the-NCAA CFP system organized as a media deal, the mistake of expanding CUSA to 14 members is not something with an easy fix. If there was an easy fix, it would have been fixed, already.

[+ because the media providing the money and the six conferences getting the lions share of the minority that goes to the schools don't want autobids to squeeze out at-large bids, and also don't want to grow the tournament]

Obviously—the point I’m getting at is, as an exercise, you draw out a bunch of potential combinations of those (24+6) / 3 but just because they look good in paper doesn’t mean the schools involved would want to move.

I feel like a 6th G conference depends on a few things: Do the P5s need cheaper body bag games? More G teams the more hardball a P5 team can play with payout. Also, does ESPN need extra inventory for TV, or does ESPN want more bowls and need those extra teams? ESPN could put pressure on the CFP committee, or if the committee member teams want those extra teams then they could reword the contract at renewal to include an extra conference (WAC?).

I don't think payday game prices are an issue for the P5 schools. They still make more for those games in tickets and concessions than they pay. Heck they already can schedule FCS teams for cheap in addition to a G5. For some P5 schools that would be half of their OOC, for others 2/3s.

ESPN probably doesn't need more teams to fill in airtime. Otherwise they'd start to televise FCS games.

The payout for FCS games is less than half of what G# teams are paid. Also, you can only count one FCS game toward bowl eligibility. You telling me that teams like Wake and Kansas wouldn't want to count both Lamar and SFA toward bowl eligibility? If they can get the payouts more toward the FCS level than G5 level, then it's a win-win for the P5 teams.

The Big North or a New England conference

If those two schools were G5 then Wake and Kansas wouldn't be able to afford them. There's a reason those programs travel to G5s fairly often.

I think that the weakest G5s would be able to command the most money for a payday since they're more of a sure thing. I could be wrong though.

Adding a 6th league would diminish the CFB payout to every existing G5 team, right? Assuming that could be hashed out, with the Sun Belt, CUSA, UConn, UMass, NMSU and Liberty, you’d only need two FCS call-ups (say JMU and Eastern Kentucky). The problem I see is the benefits of an 8 team conference with UConn and UMass as FB-only members that justifies the move. Is ODU, Liberty, JMU, App. State, Charlotte, Coastal, Ga. Southern and Ga. State a solid enough 8 team all-sports league? Or would they try to poach three additional non-FB members in basketball (say College of Charleston, UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Greensboro)?

RE: G6 FBS Conferences - JHS55 - 04-08-2021 09:51 AM

the pac12 needs to move to the G conferences then the G6 can establish a second FBS league and have real playoffs and a championship to crown a champion to go on and play the winner of the A5

of course G6 and A5 teams could still play each other during regular season

Easier to just send 90% of those teams back to FCS.

RE: G6 FBS Conferences - SMUstang - 04-08-2021 03:59 PM

Current Football Members:
AAC - 11, CUSA - 14, MWC - 12, MAC - 12, SBC - 10, Ind - 6 = Total - 65

Proposed:
6 Conferences of 10 teams each + 5 Ind

Granted this is a pipe dream that will never happen.

Why would anybody want that pipe dream to happen? Who benefits?

The 6th conference. And to a lesser extent CUSA, MWC, MAC and the AAC. (fewer mouths to feed)

But everybody's self interest will keep this from happening.
