Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - dragon2owl - 03-29-2021 09:55 AM

Tournament will be at Southern Miss (missed the tourney).
Rice needs to make it to the championship to keep its at-large hopes alive. One thing that worries me is that there are 2 committee members who also have teams near the bubble (Houston and Tennessee). Although, someone from WKU is on the committee.

Thursday, April 1 - 12 pm (1E) WKU vs. (4W) North Texas (ESPN+)
Thursday, April 1 - 2 pm (2W) UTEP vs. (3E) Marshall (ESPN+)

Thursday, April 1 - 7 pm (2E) Charlotte vs. (3W) UAB (ESPN+)
Friday, April 2 - 12 pm Semifinal Match 1 (ESPN+)

I agree with you the championship game is a must. But if that happens, we should be in barring a ton of upsets for some of the major conferences.

Tennessee is 5th in the SEC and they're not even having a conference tournament. It would be hard for them to get ahead of Missouri (who they did sweep) and Arkansas (who they split with). Tennessee had some bad losses early in conference play (Alabama and Georgia).

Houston is going to be close but I just don't see them having a spot over Rice if both teams get into their respective tournament championships.

Let's see what the national rankings show later today. Rice getting into the top 25 would be a good sign we're in decent shape.

Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - owl at the moon - 03-31-2021 03:29 AM

Fun poll fact:
Previous week, there were three unbeatens in the top 25. With Texas’ loss there’s only two remaining: (1) Wisconsin and (18) WKU.

I wonder how many of those two will be left undefeated by this time next week?

Good for all of them.

I am surprised Lennon got POTY over Matthews though. Don't get me wrong, Nicole had a great year, but Matthews was second in the league in hitting percentage (.438, behind Adekunle's .461) and she also led the league in blocks. They were close in kills per set.

There's no doubt in my mind the Texas win was what propelled Lennon over Matthews (Lennon won the award in 2018, Matthews in 2019).

Agreed, but then again, Lennon deserved it over Matthews last year and got robbed. Didn't she win conference Player of the Week 7 or 8 times last year? Lennon had a better year statistically last season. Obviously, she still capable of taking over a match, as she did in the 3rd set against Texas. That might have been the most dominant set of her Rice career.

North Texas played WKU close, but were swept in 3 tight sets. I think UTEP, if they beat Marshall, can take a set from WKU.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 03:51 PM

UTEP swept Marshall. They are red hot. They may prove to be WKU's most competitive match of the season.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - Almadenmike - 04-01-2021 05:07 PM

The first game is about to start on my video feed, and LiveStats says the Owls are already up, 4-1 .... now 4-3.

Go Rice!!

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:09 PM

Down 4-6 early. No offense whatsoever so far.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:13 PM

Really fast moving first set-- very few rallies.

Rice 11-10

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:19 PM

Rice 17-14. Marshall is not very good, but we can't pull away....yet.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:22 PM

19-14 as MTSU calls it's third and final time out of the set.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:24 PM

22-16

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - Tomball Owl - 04-01-2021 05:26 PM

Owls pull away for 25-16 1st set win.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:27 PM

Rice takes first set 25-16, hitting .393 vs. only .031 for MTSU. Lennon with 6 kills, 1 ace, 1 block leading the way. Only 2 attack errors for Rice.

Courtley doesn't appear to be playing.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:33 PM

Down early again 4-6 in 2nd set.

RE: Volleyball - CUSA Tournament - waltgreenberg - 04-01-2021 05:37 PM
