I can't remember and can't find it with a quick search, but I recall it at the time. UNLV or Vandy or Bama? Someone here will remember.

I wasn't thrilled with the Brannen hire, and I wasn't real happy with him even before the recent drama, but he was a competent hire.

The choices two years ago at that time were not great. So many better options right now. This is literally the best possible time to make a move.

Especially considering that Cronin departed long after the coaching carousel typically grinds to a halt. UCLA struck out on several candidates and Cronin wasn't hired until April 9. We didn't have a large pool to choose from at that point. Board favorite Nate Oats had been hired at Alabama two full weeks earlier.

Still there was nothing wrong with the Brannen hire. Just simply isn't working out at this point from a program stability and turnover standpoint, though the results are there the first two years. It's just hard to project success for Brannen with the transfer portal being what it is.

Western Carolina and Central Arkansas. We snapped him up just in time.

Brannen was the safe, obvious option. If a guy with Brannen's NKU resume were at NKU right now, he'd be a top candidate. The mistake was not recognizing the problems Brannen had at NKU with personnel and seeing that they would transfer and become amplified. But that would have very difficult to foresee (I won't say impossible, because there's at least one poster who did over on another forum). Still, it's the AD jobs to fully vet and foresee these problems, I wonder if having a foot out the door and an established relationship are what led to Bohn missing it.

RE: UC Statement on Brannen - rath v2.0 - 03-28-2021 12:43 PM

I always felt that if Brannen coached at Wisconsin-Green Bay his name never crosses Bohn’s desk.

CJB didn't appear to do anything illegal.

Takeaways:
1) No question AD Cunningham wants to fire the coach.
2) AD unable to initially find just "cause" and the funds to afford the $5.25M buyout.
3) This has been in the works internally for some time.
4) Players talking to AD for the past 4-6 weeks.
5) Buyout JB and you piss off Big Fick.
6) There have been no communications in the past 12 days between the AD and JB or between the AD and JB's staff.
7) Not stating the allegations is lawyering up.
8) Already losing some recruiting opportunities because the public statement will be screen-shot and used against UC.
9) JB will dig in to get his $5.25M or everything as close to that as possible.
10) JB will not coach again at UC.

IMO #9 the worst possible outcome. If this turns out to become an ugly, legal, drawn out battle it will burn our program down in the short run for sure.

if an AD or college sports dept. wants to fire a head coach after him winning the AAC his first year and then the covid 19 destruction of this year affect all. Well, we won't have a lot of good coaches wanting to be here. Just the ones that have been Asst coaches for years and wanting to just get a foot in door before moving on to another school. This will be the end of a consistently winning program.

Being local was a big factor, but being local should be a factor. A guy who is willing to stay here long term and not use us as a stepping stone is a big plus. Don't want to be searching for a new coach every 4/5 years.

RE: UC Statement on Brannen - rath v2.0 - 03-28-2021 12:57 PM

In basketball being local isn’t that big of a deal. Recruiting is not limited to the immediate region. Winning and a blue blood hires them is a good thing.

Find the best guy. Who cares where they grew up.

Local to Cincinnati should not matter much at all.
Maybe Midwestern should carry some weight for recruiting connections and an understanding of the midwest versus east or west coast.
Mick was local. He said UC was his dream job and he'd never leave. He's in LA now.

Being local only matters if you aren't a destination job and want to have a chance at keeping a coach for more than a few years if he's successful. Heck, people make the point all the time that there is a small chance we keep Fick for a while just because he's an Ohio guy.

If we all want to be honest, Mick isn't here because he was a local guy and had become complacent. He wouldn't have been given five years to get to the NCAA tourney if he weren't a UC product. He also never coped with the updated recruiting footprint moving from the Big East to the American (even though you could argue the results weren't really there outside of the S16 run). He demanded a new arena in order to be competitive, then he never stepped up his recruiting once the new arena was on the horizon, and demanded UC give him a raise (the one we offered would have made him a Top 25 paid coach despite struggling to obtain a high seed in the tourney and typically finishing outside of the Top 25.

We can all remember lamenting about how local high school basketball products got scooped up from under our noses and had success elsewhere. We can build a successful program with Ohio folks - Cumberlands, Gates, etc. Coaches come and go for all but maybe five programs in the NCAA. Pipelines and experience have more lasting power. The work that Fick is putting in today will reap rewards for a generation of kids who watched their predecessors choose UC and experience victory on a national stage.

RE: UC Statement on Brannen - doss2 - 03-29-2021 12:37 PM

So I am hearing Brannen would not let parents be involved? I never played at the college level but in HS we sure as hell did not have parents involved. My daughter played more recently HS Soccer and SB. Parents were not involved.

Perhaps they were thinking it should be like in youth sports where parents brought after game juice boxes and snacks.

HOW LAME!

RE: UC Statement on Brannen - stpnum4 - 03-29-2021 12:57 PM

Question for those smarter than me:

If UC fires JB for cause or reaches a settlement/buyout for him to step down, what happens to the assistant coaches' contracts? Do those have to be bought out as well? If so, what does that money look like?
