Post their current record in basketball. Ask how many D1 wins they have. Ask how they could barely beat Southwestern Assemblies of God University by 6 points at home the other night in front of a crowd of 800.

Matt Brown shared earlier this week that the Southland reached out to both Texas-Arlington & UTRGV...

The coverage of Little Rock to the Ohio Valley exposed that they had at least talked to the Southland...

Arlington as we know it is presenting before the Missouri Valley in 10 days along with Murray State & UMKC.

Arlington makes absolutely no sense for the current Southland in my opinion. Would certainly think if the MVC does not work out, that they could find a landing spot in the WAC.

That what's i would surmise as well. If the MVC says no thanks the WAC and it's Texas base will do and they can have SHSU's slot

Incarnate Word already took SHSU's slot, but I don't think the WAC would turn down UTA.

UTA to the WAC would throw off the divisional match as there’d be 7 teams in the Texas Division and 6 in the West. They might still go for it.

West: California Baptist, Grand Canyon, Seattle, Southern Utah, Utah Tech, Utah Valley
Texas: Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin St, Tarleton St, UTA, UTRGV

That’s not terrible.

Football: 7 conference games. Utah schools play 4 Utah games (3 home vs Texas schools and 1 in-state match) + 3 games in Texas. Texas schools play 1 game in Utah + 6 games in Texas (3 home, 3 away).

Basketball: 18 games. 6 opponents once, 6 opponents twice.

I agree, the WAC would find a way to make 13 work. UTA would be a great fit institutionally and having UTA on board would be good insurance in case CUSA circles back in a couple of years and poaches another WAC school.

However it looks like UTA will be gone to the MVC instead. If so I think that will ultimately benefit the MVC more than UTA, but we’ll see.

I think the WAC is more interested in football schools right now, and UTA do not move the needle. Same for Southland.

SLC would take UTA in a second

Both leagues would take UTA tomorrow, and both of them proactively reached out.

Matt, do you think the MVC is pretty dead set on going to 14 and making UTA part of that mix?

Are these upcoming presentations merely a formality or are these legitimate auditions for the schools to plead their case?

I’m hearing names like UTA, UMKC, and Murray St a lot but not much about UIC and I think they’d be the most logical add. What do you know about UIC?

as far as I've heard, 14 is the most likely outcome, but it is not a certainty. I'd handicap the likelihood of MVC additions like this:

UTA
UIC
Murray State
UMKC
Omaha

and I know of at least two presidents who are leaning UMKC over Murray. The presentations really do matter in this case, but I think UTA and UIC are the clubhouse favorites for sure...talked to folks at both places this week.

Are these Presidents who favor Murray from Private schools? Or is a it a mix of Private and Public?

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference? - TexasTerror - 01-12-2022 03:08 PM

With today's news from Matt Brown about Texas-Arlington deciding on the Western Athletic Conference (presumably over the Southland, who was also mentioned as a destination if the Missouri Valley said 'no')... where does that leave the Southland?

Angelo State continues to come up but that is a "long haul" for the eastern portion of the Southland though it does help with the football situation. Is that really the best option out there? I have not heard anything about Central Oklahoma, which would be a step outside the traditional TX/LA (and a little AR) boundary that the Southland has had.

What's the feelings on the Arlington news for those who follow the Southland? Any other rumblings coming to the forefront?

Why doesn't Commerce play baseball?
