Our monthly contribution from the Lake Charles American Press making clear to the Lake Charles-based fans that there are options outside the Southland Conference for the Pokes to explore and just why those reasons are worth looking at

Quote:However, several sources have told the American Press that not only is Mc-Neese considering making a move in the future, there are those who would love to see them come aboard if they are looking for a new home. That includes the much talked about Western Athletic Conference.

This is only the 2nd bit of real information we’ve gotten for the WAC’s 14th. The first bit was an Incarnate Word site visit but at least one Texas-4 president was still a “hell no” on UIW.

Taking McNeese would sink the Southland

But where would the others go? What conference is picking up UIW, Nicholls, SELA, HBU, and Northwestern St.?

This is unconfirmed but I've read that the Southland's D2 prospects in the Lone Star are only willing to leave if WTAM moves first. The Southland may not fall apart, but it would certainly hurt their prospects.

The more D-II call-ups we get in D-I, the more I see a need for schools to move down or for there to be a 4th division.

That would lead to me no longer watching college basketball. Low majors upsetting well-known college basketball teams is one of the most exciting aspects of the game.

The challenge with bringing a few Division II move-ups at once is the scheduling & RPI counter issues.

You may be able to stomach twice at once, but anymore than that in a single swipe is not a good thing for a league in which playing non-Division I counters particularly in football but more importantly men's basketball is a regular thing to get home games. Wouldn't want to use up all your allowable non-D1 counters for 'conference games' when you need to schedule non-D1 home games in men's hoops.

If this is true, Southland would be a step away from the grim reaper if McNeese were to leave.

Nowhere, but if they lose McNeese they cannot field football as they will be below the 6 team minimum.

At that point 4 schools will have to add soccer in order to meet the NCAA D1 team sports compliance rules.

Best case scenario for Southland seems to be that the WAC takes WTA&MU so that the Southland can take A&M Kingsville and A&M Commerce.

Would kill Lonestar football, but the A&M Schools would be protected

Or The Powers That Be flinch from enforcing the rules (that nobody REALLY cares about anyway) at the cost of killing a conference, and either grant a waiver or rewrite the rulebook (as was done to save the WAC 10 years ago).

A bad alternative but they could all just become independents Still schedule each other and then go on the search for other opponents. Unlikely I know.

They're not Chicago State. They'll get a waiver even if McNeese leaves.

IIRC, there is an automatic two year waiver, so they have two years to fix things if the conference falls short of the sports sponsorship requirements. If they have a plan to come into compliance and it's going to take more than two years, perhaps they could apply for an additional waiver.

If they don't have a plan and just want to continue getting the Tourney autobid money and the Tourney spot without meeting the NCAA rules, the NCAA faces a lot of incentive to turn that request down.

Or the Louisiana schools will sponsor soccer and get that extra team sport needed

That'd be neat. Not sure if this vid has been posted but he seems to think Commerce will be the Southland's main target (I talked to him about it in the comments):

Is it just me, or does it feel like the interest of the D2 Texas schools have been hard to gauge?

WTAMU seems to be the best equipped to move up but really only make sense as a WAC school

A&M Commerce and A&M Kingsville could fit in the WAC or Southland

Midwestern St, Angelo St, and UTPB seem less ready to move but if dominos start falling maybe they look to move too?

Is the Southland actively recruiting any of them at this point or do they still think they can rebuild with D1s?
