um, wrong. It would have been Louisville, they were the 1st team out. They just chose not to play in the NIT.

But it would have been Louisville. The first four stand-ins may have been the same as the four NIT OFFERS, but it would be wrong to assume that opting out of the NIT meant opting out of stand-in status.

VCU's positives where 48 hours before the game was scheduled. That is after the cut off date to be replaced. Nobody is at fault, Louisville was not cheated.
VCU thinks the problem was the hotel where they stayed in Dayton for the A-10 tournament, as the Ohio High School State Championship tournament also had teams staying at the same hotel and they were not following A-10 protocols. That is possible, it fits timeline. St. Bony stayed their as well, but had no positives. Such is the randomness.

The NCAA sees the results minutes, maybe a couple hours before the team representative (depending upon their availability), not days. It's probably only minutes before if that, because testing labs text you when they have the results, and school reps are also on the text list as well as the NCAA. (I am awaiting a test result myself from a Friday test, but since it's the weekend I probably won't know until Monday; they gave me a text yesterday saying it wasn't ready yet)

I’m my opinion, it was very irresponsible for CBS Sports to print that story. There is no hard evidence whatsoever that the VCU Covid issue originated at that hotel.
Just another example what so many people view the media with such contempt.

You have a reading comprehension problem.
CBS is not saying it came from the hotel, rather that VCU team officials think it came from the hotel. They then gave anecdotal reports of the conditions in the lobby from VCU officials. CBS did check out the story and confirmed the Ohio High School State championship teams were staying in the hotel.
It is very reasonable to report that. It's not conclusive, but relevant information.
