Elon gets Ernie Nestor, Duckett is likely to take the NC A&T job.

It will be interesting to see if Odom puts some old Gamecock ties on his bench...

Quote:As far as hiring an assistant, Im going to let things settle a bit before I address the vacancy. I expect to not use
any timetable and to not release any names.

Odom said this re: Nestor going to Elon.

Odom thinks Duckett won't get NC A&T job...

- Drakeman - 05-07-2003 09:01 PM

I heard Duckett speak at the Piedmont Triad Gamecock Club meeting in Greensboro last night. I really enjoyed listening to him. He stated several times that the staff recognizes that it needs to speed up the tempo, & says they're trying to get the players to do that. Talked alot about the need to have a guard that can penetrate & create. I got the impression that he feels the 4 signees will help them move in that direction, but that it'll take more. He mentioned the need to build depth too, & bemoaned the fact that we had 3 starters miss a combined total of something like 31 games.

All in all I thought he spoke quite candidly about last season & where the program is. He didn't make excuses, he didn't sugar coat anything, and more importantly I got the impression that the staff is dedicated, motivated, & confident that they can turn things around.

Wow! I just made my 11,000 post!!! That was quick!! :fast:

I know that some among us dislike the fact that Odom was hired, but I really feel that he can get the job done here. The general consensus was that Fogler quit recruiting, yet the same people say that Odom should be winning with the talent left him with some added players.

It takes, on average, five years to build a program, and that assumes no major set backs. I think we will get back to the big dance within 2 years with Odom. Just my gut feeling. Then again, it could just be my wife's cooking, 03-puke in which case...never mind.

I know! I'm already over 5K myself!

Good post and thanks for the info.

Is it just my own famous "negativity"? Or does anyone else feel that Odom's program is crumbling right before our very eyes? After only 2 seasons, yet?

- Carolina - 05-08-2003 10:15 AM

If you want to build something strong, you have to clear out the shaky foundation, put a solid foundation in, and build on that. I'm sure that's what Dave is trying to do. I'm pretty pleased with this recruiting class, and I think Dave can build on it.

As we all know, this will not happen overnight. It also remains to be seen if we're going in the right direction. I don't think we can judge Dave's ability to build something here until we see how these new recruits turn out and what kind of recruits we get in the future. Until he gets his own players in here (plus a year or two because recruiting couldn't have been easy when he first arrived) there's no way to tell if Dave is the answer. I'm reserving judgment until then.

Good post Carolina, & I agree. I just don't think the Carolina faithful are going to be patient enough to allow Odom the time needed.

We'll see.

- King Ward - 05-09-2003 12:03 PM

It's much too early to count Odom out. I think that two more seasons should tell the tale - one way or the other.

- Carolina - 05-09-2003 09:28 PM

I saw on AST where Marcus Morrison will be tranferring. That explains where the extra scholly is coming from. I hope that means they think Tre' Kelly is going to qualify.

- Drakeman - 05-10-2003 12:27 AM

Saw that too! I think as far as talent & atheticism go we'll be better next year, but very, very young. We still have a ways to go before we can be competitive with the top 1/2 half of the league. At least 2 more years. Maybe more.

Almost missed that - thanks for the news.

Apparently, Ricky Stokes has been given Ernie's old position according to gamecockcentral posters

I hope this is true as he most likely has the PG knowledge needed to coach the position to our young players.

Next season will be a nightmare. Ro will be our post presence. Depending on Po Jo's abilitties, he'll have to play center. He's barely strong enough for PF. Without TK's body down there, he'll get abused. He doesn't lift weights for jack and won't be any stronger. He doesn't have any comittment to improving as a player and won't. Now he's running around with the wrong sort of friends. We'll be lucky if he passes his random p tests even if he doesn't get into other trouble.

Carlos will have to score and be the leader in the front court. PG will be rough and without scoring unless Tre Kelly can come in and start right away. Those freshmen will have to light it up big time just to reach .500.
We're in trouble next season which could strike a fatal blow to recruiting in the pivotal year. We must sign Little Buck Fredericks. Fredericks and the Silver Bluff kid would be huge for the program, but we've got to improve on the floor to be attractive to anyone.

- 65tiger - 05-21-2003 07:27 PM

Glad you made it over Steel. Wallace can help next year, he's a team player, but he can take charge if he has to. He even played point guard some this past season. But he needs to beef up some. If he had the muscles his brother has, he would be unstoppable.
