If my count is right Jordan and Nuga heading out would mean if Pippen, Hamilton, and Beck all decided to stick around we'd have scholarships for everyone. From the start of the year Bennett, Smith, Nuga, and Jordan out, Carry, Sullinger, Rollins, and Hornbeak in. I'm sure there will be more movement though.

Lots of big-name programs would love to have Nuga for a year, even if only off the bench. The only thing that may reduce his offers would be his injury. If not for his injury, I would consider him gone. It must be pain in the butt for coaches, with so many players using the portal to see what's out there. If one or more players leave, then the coach has to scramble for replacements. Conducting practices and game coaching are the "fun" part of their job. The rest must be a real pain.

Found this in a thread elsewhere, the portal has been crazy.

Quote:Insane, over 800 names in the portal. Thats an average of 2.3 per school. The tournament isnt over and defections may come from those teams as well.

This time last year they had 439.”

A couple one time Kent recruits in that list Ahmed Ali and Xavier Pinson.

Nuga has cut his list of potential transfer destinations down to UNLV, BYU, and Wyoming:

This is not college basketball. They are not student athletes. They are mercenaries.

What a turn-off from what college athletics used to be & should be.

I hope somebody is educating Nuga to the new rules. Because he has already transferred once, he will need a NCAA waiver to play immediately. And he's already used his redshirt when he transferred to Kent.

And isn't he still doing rehab on his knee? ... The NCAA should put a rule in that says the player or new school must reimburse those medical costs.

Really a sad state of affairs ... and NCAA President Mark Emmert just got a raise/contract extension for presiding over this mess.

Rotten from the top down.

actually if there is a coaching change he can play right away. So of those 3 UNLV just got a new coach. So i'd suspect he'll end of there.

Or if not i assume he'll get a waiver as NCAA giving them out like youth sports participation trophies.

As I understand it, the coaching change would have to be where the player came from, not where he's going.

It's almost as if they assumed everyone was a free agent this year, and automatically added all players to the transfer portal

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - fallsdog - 04-28-2021 08:21 AM

I'm really starting to get excited to watch these teams gel over the next few years.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - GFlash68 - 04-28-2021 11:08 AM

I see a lot of players without a home this fall.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - Muskrat - 04-28-2021 03:08 PM

I thought I read somewhere that this season, somehow COVID-19 related, everyone gets a free pass, not just those who never transferred before. I could be mistaken. Perhaps Nuga qualifies as a graduate student? In any case, I'm sure Nuga knows what he's doing and IF he leaves knows he will be able to play.

Referring to players becoming mercenaries has some validity. In a way, mid-major type programs don't really matter. What matters is that people in high places, to include the US Supreme Court, have been wondering lately how, when coaches in the big programs get paid so much money, and can bounce from job to job with little consequence, and the top programs reap millions from football and men's basketball, the actual players who the fans pay to see get no money, other than the value of their "scholarship" and their movements are so restricted (although that has been loosening up, starting with the graduate school rules.) The mid-majors just get the same rules that are enacted with the big boys in mind.

Yeah sure. They will let the NCAA charge the player for medical expenses.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - pono - 04-28-2021 05:56 PM

since nuga sat out when he transferred to kent it seems he would still be eligible for the one time no sit out transfer, right? players can transfer multiple times but they now only get 1 free pass to play right away

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - anti-zip - 04-28-2021 06:53 PM

Nuga to UNLV

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - Muskrat - 04-28-2021 07:14 PM

I'm not surprised that Nuga left. When he entered the portal, I assumed he would. Four gone, two to go - O'Neal and Jordan.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - anti-zip - 04-28-2021 07:35 PM

Seems like a lot gone, but we'll actually have way more minutes returning than the year before. Heading into last year we only returned our #3, 8, and 9 in minutes played. Assuming Hamilton returns and Pippen doesn't, we'll return #1, 2, 4, 5, and 7. Plus an experienced transfer in Carry.

RE: Nuga in transfer portal - Muskrat - 04-28-2021 07:44 PM

Of the six who entered the portal, Nuga's loss is the one that portends what I fear may well be the future of mid-majors because of the new "one free transfer" rule. By that I mean a player who shows he is capable of performing well at a "bigger" program leaving. Certainly there will be players who stay put, rather than moving up or down, for any number of reasons. But it used to be we only had to worry about successful coaches leaving. Now we will have to worry about successful players leaving, too.
