Will Kelvin move from Houston to Austin?

Doubt it. He's made plenty of money, is old, and can field top 10 teams every other year until he retires at Houston.

Yes. Unless Tillman Fertitta ponies up big.

Don't tease me.

Chances keep going up and up that we may have a new coach before the April 14th signing period.

Mike Woodson to IU with Matta as an assistant. Pretty surprising hire.

A 63 year old NBA lifer. Should be a perfect fit. But he's an IU guy!

Obviously Archie Miller wasn't an Indiana guy, but I don't get the obsession with schools like IU and Michigan to find someone who is a grad.

Going with the Indiana family motif.

I have been thinking that there is something to be said for hiring a black coach. In a game that they dominate, it seems like a black coach will have an inmate advantage on the recruiting trail. Now, perhaps the B10 schools aren't exactly the ones you'd think would be eager to go that route compared with city schools like Houston and Memphis, but Howard is working out great for Michigan, and Woodson has IU pedigree.

I would not be opposed to seeing a black coach get a crack at our own imminent vacancy.

Schools who haven't been relevant in their lead sports for decades tend to try to harken back to those times as much as possible. It's why so many of our fans are all about a severely underqualified former player who has shown no ability to coach well be considered for the job.

Going to be interesting to watch how the Matta/Woodson dynamic is, especially considering reports that Matta was the guy but failed a physical.

The only other example I can think of where an NBA lifer took their first college head coaching job in their 60s is Mike Dunleavy. We all know how that turned out, and Dunleavy came in with an arguably better NBA coaching record.

Larry Brown says hello.

Edit: Well I guess it wasn't his FIRST College job, but he had been in the NBA for 23 years before SMU.

He was the head coach at UCLA and Kansas, with a couple final fours and a national championship before starting his NBA coaching career.

Whenever I think of an NBA coach stepping down to the college level to rescue an NCAA program, I think of Ed Badger. Imagine getting the former coach of the Bulls in here.

I told you IU was going to hire an IU guy.

And Matta was hired as an "assistant AD". Translation: Ready made replacement in case Woodson sucks.

Matta is going to end up handling the recruiting, program development, etc...Woodson is just going to be the in-game coach IMO.

RE: Coaching Carousel - OKIcat - 03-29-2021 07:35 AM

Hiring an NBA assistant strongly suggests that most of the favorites identified in an Indianapolis Star article a couple of weeks ago said no.

The thought that Brad Stevens was going to move from Boston to Bloomington suggests how unrealistic IU fans have become about the current lack of Hoosier hysteria.

Having said that, if we see a coaching change here this week, I think it will also be an unforeseen selection. Athletic Directors usually have a short list on hand and often those are not names familiar to us as fans, though they may be fine coaches. I'm not sure there was much of an outcry to hire Bob Huggins after UC parted with Tony Yates yet it ushered in a remarkable period in Bearcat basketball history.

Finally, I may feel differently in a day or a week but I don't see Archie Miller as a fit at UC. Anyone who watched IU play this year saw a team with some blue chip players where the wheels fell completely off the wagon down the stretch. Can Archie recruit and coach? I say yes. But he has zero personality. At this point, I think UC needs someone who can put the program back together competitively but also energizes local media and fans. We can argue about Brannen's results, but I think he failed totally in connecting with UC fans in a meaningful way.

That line of thinking works in football because there are likely only 20 "Good" head coaches to hire every year...in basketball, you can practically quadruple that number without even getting into assistants.

Freeman was also coming from the premier non-P5 program. The basketball equivalent would be hiring a good up and coming assistant from Villanova or Gonzaga. And again basketball is not an apple to apples comparison because you have so many D1 programs to hire HCs from.

Interesting sidenote.... Villanova's assistant coach was just hired as head coach at Fordham.
